a couple years? how many miles you think you have on em?

sounds like you need new shoes nonetheless.

go to a place that you can talk to about the rubbing issue and they can watch you run and recommend a fit for you.

atleast, 100 miles. I got them for the gym in 2009 and my running app says I've run 88 miles since may 2011 so I'm ballparking it at 100. I'll look around for some stores near me. Thanks!

I think there's something seriously wrong with me. I'm reading Maffetone and did his MAF test, which involves running (for me) below 155bpm for 5 miles. Olympic athletes in their 30s can do a 5 minute mile at that heart rate. I'm averaging between 14-15 minutes per mile. whath efuck.

Zombies, Run! Makes Your Workout a Race for Survival

By Jason Schreier Email Author

Categories: Portable Gaming

Need more motivation for your next run? How about a pack of snarling zombies snapping at your heels?

Zombies, Run!, to be released early next year for iPhone and Android, is an app in the style of Runkeeper, with an exciting undead twist.

You start up the app, plug in your headphones and go for a run. As you begin to sprint, jog or walk to your destination of choice, you’ll hear the narrated story of a zombie-infested, dystopian future. You’re a “runner” in this world, which means that your job is to go out and collect supplies like ammo, medicine and batteries for your ragtag base of human survivors. The more you run, the more stuff you’ll acquire.

“We want to tap into a fantasy that we think a lot of people have when they’re running or deciding to get fit — that you can be the hero of your own action movie,” said the game’s designer, Adrian Hon, in an e-mail.

“After all, why does anyone want to run? Probably so we know that if things get bad, we can rely on our bodies to get us out of trouble.”

The idea first came from a class for amateur runners, which Zombies, Run! writer Naomi Alderman had joined. During an introductory session, one of the organizers asked the group why they wanted to run.

“To outrun the zombie horde,” said one of the participants. Everybody laughed — except for Alderman. Her mind was busy running races of its own.

Hon says you’ll be able to make meaningful decisions as you progress through Zombies, Run. For example, once you’ve finished a running session, you’ll be able to allocate resources to different areas of your city, choosing which people to help out. He hints that your decisions could result in life-or-death consequences for some of the game’s survivors.

“It’s really important to us that this isn’t just gamification,” Hon said. “We haven’t just put experience points and levels and nonsense badges onto running — that stuff feels really shallow really quickly. It’s probably more like a role-playing game than anything else.”"

^Lolz. I think I am going to have to DNF myself on my half-IM because of my heel pain- I will do the swim and bike but not the run. I did a trail half-marathon 2 weeks ago and had to walk/run the last 2 miles because the pain was excruciating.

I will go to get it X-rayed after tri season is over-hopefully I will still be able to do cyclocross. It could be Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, or maybe a hairline fracture.

Ran the MCM 10K last weekend. Way too cold for this time of year, but alteast it was on Sunday instead of Saturday (freezing rain, sleet, and snow on Saturday).

Of course way too many people got in the wrong corral (I'll never understand why slow runners or walkers feel the need to be in the first or second corral). The 14th street bridge was still iced over by the time we went over it, and I thought for sure I was goint to bust my ass a couple of times. Overall it was a really fun race, and I met some other Wolfpackers at the start line. Finished right at 46 mins, which I wasn't too happy with, but I guess it's ok considering the ankle problems a couple of months ago and the race conditions.

Anyone doing any Turkey Trots in the Raleigh-Durham area over Thanksgiving? I've been thinking about doing the Ridgewood Turkey Trot http://www.ridgewoodshoppingcenter.com/turkeytrot or the Crossroads one http://www.ncraces.com/events/cross-roads-turkey-trot/

Running in a Turkey Trot in my hometown, with all of probably 200 people

Been looking at a watch, because I'm really tired of the inaccuracies of GPS apps, plus it would be nice to have HRM too. Anybody have any experience with the Garmin Forerunner 110 : http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Forerunner-GPS-Enabled-Sport-Monitor/dp/B003JTLKIA/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2AI3O5SXZOBZH&colid=1R7PYGANI0DOD

I read to the reviews online. Just wanted to see if anybody on here had any experience, or anything to 'watch out for' ?

I'm in need of a running coach. I need to run faster. I'd like to get down to about 8 min/mile in a 3 mile run and would like to get to 7min/mile on 2 mile run.

also I suck at running, and would like said coach to watch me run and give me things to improve on. I can pay in $ or beer.

For the Forerunners, I ended up getting the 210. I really like it - only used it once so far but its very simple. I think its more accurate then the 110, has current pace, and supports a foot pod if I feel like shelling out $50. Also a 'premium softstrap heart monitor', whatever that means.

Did the Vegas half with this, connected outside in like 15 seconds, shows Distance, Time, and Pace, and the scroll button replaces Time with HR. Downside is no bike cadence thingy, and its not waterproof.

My boss is looking at the 910xt. A bit more but it does everything.

What kinds of runs do you guys do during the week? I just do 2-3 short/1 long, but no intervals or tempos or whatever. My coach told me to get up to 4 runs if I want to do longer distances safely. I want to be overly prepared for a Marathon next year (don't care about pace) but do 5/10ks fast. Can you train for both or does going between the two not work?

^ Thanks. My mom's boss, who runs a marathon almost every single weekend, said he has the 110 and really likes it, so I'm probably going to stick with that one.

I've been kind of doing the same thing. The two short runs are usually paced fairly quickly and I try to fall into a good comfortable pace for the long runs (7:30-7:45), but push the last 2 miles or so. It would be hard on me to run more than that and not end up burning out, since I also play in a soccer league and try to lift a couple times a week.
I'm in the same boat race-wise too, I'd really like to get my time down for 5Ks-10Ks (Ran a 20:46 at the Turkey Trot 5K, so I'd like to break the 20 min mark). I'm also looking at doing my first half and full marathon, for which time is less important, but naturally I still have my expectations. So if you find any good information about finding a good balance, I'd be interested to hear it.

As of now I have a three race series (5K, 6K, 8K) that starts in January and the last race is in Feb.
The Shamrock Dolphin Challenge (8K on Saturday, Half on Sunday) in March.
Possibly the Burlington, VT Marathon in May
Marine Marathon in Oct. (Deferred from last year).

Vegas in December is worth it. Also the course is flat. (Just don't be looking for PR)

I've heard the difference between a half and a full is pretty significant - May may be too soon if you're doing your first half in March. Mostly the wall around 20m..though I'm not opposed to doing 20 and walkrunning the rest for my first.

Shamrock sounds fun. I'm trying to figure out if I can do the Goofy (Half+Full) Jan 2013, but don't know if a year's enough.

Also I'd kill for a 20m 5k!

ive got the 405 with heart rate strap. ive had it for about 1 year and 4 months. its awesome. at first i was annoyed with the touch screen because when sweat would drip on it, it would go crazy.. then i learned you can lock the touch screen bezel (but still use start/stop and lap button). now i like it even more. i just keep it locked on heart rate and go!. it was on sale the other day. garmin makes a great product. the online center is the best (vs the pc/mac program). and now they have a garmin app for it. but you need some sort of adapter.

A dude actually yelled "you run like a girl" at me this morning.

Dude, that's insult to girls.

Funny thing is I needed to keep my heart rate down during the run but couldn't. It was 20 points elevated and all I could do is fantasize about slicing the guy's face off.

Love my mizuno waves. I used to be an asics die hard (kayano, many others) but eventually got fitted for shoe based on my running style and got the recommendation for mizunos. I was reluctant but gave them a shot for training and ended up really liking them. To be fair, I havent really found a shoe Ive disliked besides adidas though (maybe Nike, but theyre OK).

so the horrible pain that i had last year in my foot/ankle has returned. in doing some googling i found that it seems to be an issue with the peroneus tendon.

i get the pain on the ankle and on the side of my foot when walking/running. it only came back suddenly when i was walking around on friday night. i did get some new sneakers but hadn't even started using them when the pain came back.

anybody have any experience with this and/or solutions?

^^^Check 6pm.com. I went to a store in Raleigh and tried on a pair that I like, and made sure I knew what size I needed. Then I went on 6pm and found them for about half the price. Also, have been using Adidas Micoach app and I really like it.

ahh sweet.

thanks guys

i noticed I have the nike plus app on my phone but the case for my phone has yet to have an integrated arm band, so I may not be using it in the end.

probably go with old school watch method to time runs. that or buy a cheap armband and swap it out every day

I dealt with peroneal tendonitis last year and had pain in the area you described. For me, the pain was primarily on the outside middle of the foot, where the lower arrow points below:

The interesting thing about the peroneal tendon is that it actually runs on the outside of your leg all the way up to near the knee. I was shocked to find some major knots in the side of my upper calf demonstrated below:

I used both "The Stick" and a foam roller, and the foam roller was more beneficial for this injury. If you use the foam roller, prop yourself up with the elbow of the affected side (as you would for rolling your IT band), and roll from the top of ankle to just below the knee.

I hope this helps. Keep in mind that pain in this area may be the result of a bigger problem. In my case, I was relying too much on my outer foot during each stride due to some problems in my 1 and 2 metatarsals. My 3/4/5 were doing too much work and it took over a year to get to the root of this problem and resume my normal mileage.

If you don't mind minimalist, I like these.

http://www.zappos.com/inov-8-road-x-155-yellow-white

They're hideous, but kinda cool looking. (They are REALLY yellow) I think they weigh less then my Vibrams.. its really nice not having that weight on your foot. They also have enough cushioning to feel nice. Had to switch from Vibrams when I upped my cadence; the top of my foot got crazy painful.. I think it was because I was occasionally not landing on my heel and my foot wasn't strong enough to handle it. I have no idea how you strengthen your feet muscles otherwise.

Speaking of injuries, anyone deal with a sore hip flexor? It doesn't get sore until after a run. My PT wasn't really sure what to do with it - it usually goes away in a day so its kinda hard to pinpoint.

Thank you!! I'm going to try that tonight - see how it feels.

How'd you discover the issue with the running? I had the problem last year and again this year. It seems to coincide nicely with me trying to increase my workout load rather quickly, instead of easing into it (yes, i know it's my fault )

I was diagnosed by a podiatrist with capsulitis and by an ortho surgeon with synovitis, both on the second metatarsal of my right foot. I think they are similar conditions, both involving inflammation in the joint. Prior to being diagnosed, I ran through it, for six months. Unbeknownst to me, I was avoiding the pain by only using the outside of my foot. This led to the peroneal tendonitis. My decision to move away from lightweight stability shoes and try more minimal shoes like the Free 3.0 didn't help. Apparently I really need the medial post provided by stability shoes, because that post helps force my foot into the proper pronation to get all of the toes involved and pulling their fair share of the load.

One thing you may want to be cognizant of when you return is how you are pushing off the ground. Can you feel your big toe taking on some of the load (it is supposed to handle 1/3 of the total load). Can you feel each of your other toes get involved (1/6 per toe)? This type of proprioception is something I lost or ignored and I am trying to pay more attention to it now with each run.

My gf is starting to run with me. She's suffering from pretty bad shin splints. We'll do 5k and she'll be in pain for 2+ days.

I'm pretty sure splints are caused by excessive heal strike, right? I've conveyed this to her, but honestly she isn't in good enough shape yet, or enjoying running enough yet to work on her form/stride?

Any advice on preventing, or medicating splints would be greatly appreciated.

the best thing she can do is rest.

there are some stretches as well.
put your back flat against the wall and put a 2x4 under your feet.. do that for some time. then put maybe another piece of wood. but who knows how far you can stretch.. its not your shins that hurt, its the muscle thats being screwed with. so you pretty much have to stretch it out and get it back to spec.

stretch your toes towards your body and away..

youtube probably has some good vids.

Get a sports massage and ask them how tight your ITs are. I had a really bad knee issue last year that knocked me out of running for 5 weeks. I got a sports massage once a month, and most of the time the masseusist told me my ITs were super tight. I was building distance and became a problem when I did 9+ mile runs.

Do you tend to heel strike? If you do one thing that helped me was moving to a higher foot cadence and this eventually changed how I landed. Since then I never had an issue with my knee.. just don't overdo it. (If you change your run patterns it can fuck up other parts of your body, but knees should be fine!)

best sports drink is water.

It's winter (less sweating), and if you are just starting, you likely aren't running long enough to have a need for replacing electrolytes.

I'd go with water. If you're doing something beyond what you normally do, maybe watered down gatorade. I take some G2 with me during long runs and its made a difference.

^^That blows my mind. I just read this last year:

It kills me that at my fastest mile (7:00), there are still people that can run nearly TWICE as fast as me (3:43 being the world record).

I posted this in the Beachbody thread but I guess it really belongs here lol (I keep forgetting this thread exists)

Here are my upcoming races for this year, I'm starting a 14 week training for the 10 mile run on May 6th and then training for my first half which is in September

February 5: Super Bowl 5k TIME 36:09 PACE 11:39 (36 mins was my goal after taking a couple of months off after an injury, so I'm really happy with this and I know I can do even before)
March 31: Phillies Charities 5k
April 14: Team Up with Habitat 5K
April 22: Valley Forge Revolutionary 5 Mile Run
May 6: Broad Street 10 Mile Run
September 16: Philadelphia Half Marathon (my first)
October 28: MCM10k
November 6: Raleigh City of Oaks Half Marathon (maybe or if I dont do the Philly Rock&Roll)

I also got checked out for new shoes at my local running store, I ended up choosing Brooks Adrenaline GTS 11, they should ready for me to pick up by the end of the week, so excited! I've really worn out my old shoes, they still have the blood on them that a posted about before in this thread

I bought some of the minimalist New Balance trail runners...has anyone else who has switched to a "minimal shoe" had really bad pains in their arches? I went on a 2 mile break in run and after 1 mile my arches had like shooting pains. Is this normal during the break in period?
