When playing NCAA Football what formation do you like to use? What is your offensive philosophy? Do you mainly pass or mainly run, or is it more of a balance for you. I'm big on the run, even though I can pass pretty well (probably run 65% and pass 35%). I like to control the game. I like teams that run Ace and I sets, but have Shotgun and Empty Backfield sets when I need to pass in a hurry, like when you are trying to score points in the final 2 minutes of a game.

Leonard is on scholarship now though, correct? He should definitely help add some agility needed at the linebacker position on passing downs. Hopefully he gets to play a lot this year and make some memories that he can tell his kids and grandkids about.

Countdown to kickoff: Willis ready to play again

Should he stay or should he go was the question Keith Willis Jr. went back and forth with when he was trying to figure out his future.

The 6-foot-1, 284-pound defensive tackle had 17 tackles, three tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in 11 games for Boston College in 2006. Following his sophomore season, BC coach Tom O'Brien was hired by North Carolina State bringing along his father, defensive line coach Keith Willis Sr., with him.

Willis Jr. wanted to follow his father to Raleigh, but knew the price was steep because he'd have to give up one year of playing eligibility, and leave behind his friends in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Willis went through with the transfer and has had no regrets about his decision.

"It was a great decision to come down here," Willis said. "I feel welcomed and my family likes it down here. I like NC State and I like the state of North Carolina and the fans, everything.

"The fan base down here and just driving along the highways and seeing all the NC State stickers or Wolfpack fans. There is so much support around the whole state, and that is the big difference down here coming from BC."

Willis grew up around many of the current NC State coaches, and couldn't imagine playing college football under a new staff.

"It was real hard, but I felt at home with the coaching staff," Willis said. "Coach O'Brien is just a great guy, and [strength and conditioning] Coach Todd Rice is one of the big inspirations in my life and career. I've seen how I've grown under Coach Rice."

Willis watched his old team go 11-3, including getting a win over NC State 37-17. Needless to say, he has Oct. 4 circled on his calendar when the Eagles come to play the Wolfpack at Carter-Finley Stadium.

"I miss the relationships I formed with some of the former players back there," Willis said. "I followed them last year, and I still have some good friends there. I've been talking to some guys already. It won't be a homecoming, but it will be along those lines for me."

Willis is happy to finally get on the field and play somebody that isn't a teammate. He used the year off to get healthy and increase his strength and explosiveness.

Willis played left defensive tackle on the scout team last year, often butting heads against right guards Curtis Crouch and Meares Green.

"I think I've improved on my speed and just my awareness on the field," said Willis, who had a sack in the Red-White spring game April 19. "I am looking forward to have it come together on the game field. I just feel I got better on the scout team."

Willis also enjoyed being coached by his father last year. He joked that when teammates start complaining about Coach Willis, he's not afraid to join in, but only to a certain point, since his dad also provides him with home-cooked meals.

"He's pretty much a father figure for all the guys on the field," Willis said. "He makes a relationship with everybody, and not just on the D-Line, where everyone just feels comfortable. It's work when it is work, but it is also fun when it's fun.

"He doesn't treat me any differently, and he'll cuss me out. He'll let me know when I'm doing something wrong or doing something right."

Raleigh is the fourth city Willis has lived in, but the area has given him a chance to pursue one of the passions in his life.

"I really like to go fishing with the guys," Willis said. "Willie Young is a big fisher, Markus Kuhn and Toney Baker, we all go. Anthony Hill too, so that's a pretty good team of fisherman. I like to go bass fishing."

Willis has come a long way since being a 240-pound fullback and defensive end coming out of Xaverian Brothers High in Boston. Now, he's up to around 290 pounds and hopes to have a productive redshirt senior season. However, he is willing to dust off some of his fullback moves if needed.

"I did some things like he [Jerome Bettis] did, and I was a hard hitter at fullback," Willis said. "I told [running backs] Coach [Jason] Swepson when he was over at our house for a little cookout a while back, that if he needed a fullback, I'd shed a couple of pounds. I'd have to shed about 45 pounds to get back to my fullback weight since I'm about 290 right now."

Teammate Harrison Ritcher seems to have the fullback position settled, but Willis is slated to be the backup behind Antoine Holmes at left defensive tackle when practice begins July 31.

After everything he has experienced over the last year, the season opener against South Carolina on Aug. 28 can't come fast enough.

"I just can't describe it really," Willis said. "I've been having dreams about it, just running out on the field. I Googled the stadium just see what it looked like. Last year, the first game of the season had 13 million people watching. It's going to be a wild experience."

Today I profile Arizona Stadium, home to the University of Arizona Wildcats. An interesting fact about this stadium is that it was seen in many scenes of Revenge of the Nerds. Many of the scenes portraying the fictional Adams College were shot on the University of Arizona campus. Arizona Stadium has a capacity of 57,803, making it the 6th largest stadium in the Pac 10 (note it could technically be put at 7th since Autzen Stadium routinely goes over it's official capacity of 54,000 to as much as 59,000). It is quite an old stadium having opened in 1928 with a then capacity of 7,000. The stadium was once home to UA's track team. Like some old stadiums dormitories were built into the stands. The music department and Residence Life now call the two former dormitories home. Also like many old stadiums that have seen numerous expansions and renovations, Arizona Stadium has a very unique setup. There is one large set of stands on the west side and their is three tiers of seating on the east side. The student section, known as the Zona Zoo, sits the entire length of the lower section of the east stands.

Carter-Finley Stadium gets paving, landscaping, soil stabilization

Two days before Thursday's start of football practice, earth movers pushed dirt outside Carter-Finley Stadium as work on two projects proceeded with N.C. State's home opener just 5 1/2 weeks away.
Crews are paving what once was a gravel parking lot outside the northeast corner of the stadium, an area that also will serve the RBC Center for Carolina Hurricanes hockey games.

Meanwhile, N.C. State is paying to have the soil stabilized after settling took place under the recently renovated north end of the stadium.

The budget for the parking lot is $489,000 and will be paid from capital improvement funds allocated through a partnership between the Centennial Authority and N.C. State.

Contractor T.A. Loving will be paid for its time and material on the soil stabilization in a project that school capital project management associate director Cameron Smith called "minor" and said would cost less than $100,000.

Smith said some natural settling occurred under the area where seating and a visiting locker room were added, and the old Finley Field House was removed, in a project completed in 2006.

The Kernersville branch of a Texas-based company called Uretek will pump material into vacant pockets under the concrete slab in that area to prevent sinking and cracking.

N.C. State assistant athletics director for outdoor facilities Ray Brincefield said the problems were discovered during a routine inspection in an area where fill dirt was added before construction.

"It's not a structural issue," Brincefield said. "It's not a safety issue. It's just sort of standard preventive maintenance."

Officials expect the project to be completed in a couple of weeks and hope the parking lot improvements will be finished in time for the Sept. 6 home opener against William & Mary.

The area is considered premium parking by N.C. State and the Hurricanes and is located next to Carter-Finley seating, near the RBC Center. N.C. State associate athletics director for external affairs David Horning hopes the project will be done before the home opener but said the school has contingency plans to finish the work between home games if there are delays.

Horning expects seven parking spaces to be added in that area to the previous total of 489. The project also will pave the entrances to the area and add "islands" with landscaping to make it more aesthetically pleasing.

"It's a joint area that is used by both parties [N.C. State and the Hurricanes], so we have a mutual interest in it being safe at night," Centennial Authority chairman Ray Rouse said. "The terrain was rough over there, so it's a safety issue for us as well."

All I'm asking out of this year is a winning record, where one of the wins comes against UNC. Finally beating Maryland would be icing on the cake.

I would be thrilled with a 6-6 record this season given our losses and lack of depth at almost all positions. Realistically, I'm thinking 5-7 this year. I know it's cliche, but I think the next year (2009 season) is where we'll stand out in the conference.
