while i completely agree that rankings are nonsense this early in the season, and i also acknowledge we tend to spoil it for ourselves whenever we do get ranked (ie being a target etc), I can't completely say that I dont want our team to be ranked until close to tournament time every year.

This is simply because, winning (good games esp) equates to a ranking in these polls. Likewise, A good finish the previous year, plus good recruits equates to a preseason ranking in these polls. If you want our program to be national championship worthy, and returning to a national powerhouse, sooner or later you have to give somewhere. You cant have as good of a team as you want to have, and not be ranked.

Either you want our team to not get ranked or you want us to win. We need to get past the 'oh we cant be ranked, we'll be a target' mindset. Unless you want to be a bubble team that sneaks into the top 25 at the end of the regular season, wins a game or 2 in the tournament and is done every year like Herb.

the point in being ranked is to measure your teams success with that of other teams

when you're ranked 24 or 25, you bust your ass to get ranked 20 or 21st

then you bust your ass to keep winning to move up in the ranks so that when you do get a "rare" loss, you have that cusion to not fall out of the top 25 rankings

teams that get into the top 25 and stay there are considered GOOD teams, not teams that contuniually move in and fall out
