he wouldn't be cut in baseball. he's got a lot of promise, though his BA has not been great. his hitting coaches all attribute that to the fact that he has not played baseball full time. now that he can focus on one sport, he's been able to focus on the finer points of hitting and adjusting to the pitching found at the Single A level. it may take a while for him to get his bearings, but if i had to pick a pro sport in which he would be cut, the NFL would be first. 5/24/2011 9:14:27 PM |

NFL careers on average are much shorter than baseball careers, even if Russell never gets the callup to the bigs
The NFL draft is 7 rounds, the MLB draft is like 50
plus there are multiple levels of minor league play
I dunno if he'll ever be a great hitter though, I've heard he might be a pitcher but I'm not sure if he wants to pitch
he does have a fastball in the 90s though] 5/24/2011 9:15:11 PM |

the rockies would probably like for him to go play, get whatever money back from him, and keep him as a baseball prospect for a lot cheaper, since it seems like he's not doing so great anyways. 5/24/2011 9:20:54 PM |

if he was really set on football he should have taken the appropriate steps to ensure a place to play. for now though, he should take the money he's being paid and play out his contract. if it doesn't work out, he could always Chris Weinke it after a few years and use his last year of eligibility, and create a situation where he could be on campus for spring practice and really have the time to work well with a team. i feel that if he does it this fall, he's just throwing his last year away. 5/24/2011 9:23:18 PM |

No he doesn't. you have 5 to play 4. He is done if he doesn't play this year.
That article today saying he could play as early as June also says he has no timeline to make the decision and he doesn't have much time off next month....meaning the Rockies expect his ass on the diamond.

just seems like too risky a move to make for RW. the Rockies would certainly not like it, and suppose they parted ways, then in the future if he wanted to go back to baseball, teams might not even give him the time of day. 5/24/2011 9:41:15 PM |

Of course they'd be disappointed. Any employer wouldn't want one of their assets engaging in high risk off the field behavior. Point is, this is Russell's last chance to play football at a high level, probably ever. He can play baseball until he's 40. 250K is a lot when you're 22, but not worth giving up a chance that you may regret for the rest of your life. 5/25/2011 10:41:19 AM |

From the link in the tweet, looks like he did go and Auburn is playing dumb.
[SEC fan]Maybe Auburn can compensate Wilson having to return a significant portion of his signing bonus[/SEC fan]
Quote : | "A fourth-round pick of the Colorado Rockies in the 2010 draft, who received a $250,000 signing bonus, Wilson would have to give some of that back if he left the Tourists before the end of this season to play college football.
“It's a significant portion he would have to return,” said Marc Gustafson, the Rockies' senior director of player development.
Gustafson also said it would be difficult for Wilson, who is struggling offensively with the Tourists, to return to baseball if he played football this fall.
“It would be hard for him to come back to baseball because he would miss a lot of games and have had so much time away,” Gustafson said.
Wilson is hitting .216 in 38 games with Asheville with 53 strikeouts in 116 at-bats. In 230 at-bats as a pro, Wilson has struck out 89 times.
Wilson, who recently turned down an interview request because he said he wouldn't talk about football, informed the Rockies that he was visiting Auburn. " |

i guess what I don't understand is how he thought this was all going to play out? Did he plan all along that he was going to give back the signing bonus? If football is so important to him, then why not just play one more year? He obviously has the goods he could have went to any minor league spring workout and tried out like a lot of guys do every year after not getting drafted and/or cut from a summer free-agent try out (maybe he would make a pro team). I'd rather have him than TJ Yates and a bunch of other numbskull NFL QB's 5/25/2011 10:50:00 AM |

but what is transpiring with his wavering and waffling is further validation to me that TOB did the right thing. the boys know who the QB is, and have so much time to adjust and work on chemistry. such a huge benefit for relatively young team with a new WR corp. 5/25/2011 10:52:52 AM |

The dumbest thing Wilson did was sign that baseball contract. The second dumbest thing he did was enter the draft in the first place. If he had any sense at all he would have played out his collegiate eligibility in both sports then entered both drafts and made his choice then. 5/25/2011 9:09:27 PM |

I think it's because TJ Yates got fucking drafted, and Wilson is obviously better than Yates.
also ^I think every Jr. is eligible for the MLB draft, they don't have to enter their name like the NFL/NBA. If they get drafted and sign, they can't play anymore, but if they don't get drafted/don't sign they can go back to school. Wilson got drafted higher than really anyone expected, so it was hard for him to turn down that money.5/25/2011 9:26:51 PM |

Former North Carolina State quarterback Russell Wilson is scheduled to visit the University of Wisconsin next week, a UW source said.
...Wilson has reportedly visited Auburn. With the scheduled visit to UW, it would appear the Tigers and Badgers are the leading candidates to land the prolific passer... The Tourists have a day off on Wednesday, making it the only day next week Wilson could visit UW. The team has a day game on Tuesday, so Wilson could fly to Madison on Tuesday night.
...The UW source said Wilson hopes to make a decision on where he'll play before the end of June... Wilson, from Richmond, Va., has a tie to UW. According to several sources, he has a connection to a relative of UW chancellor Biddy Martin." |
