I'm pretty sure the pain killers are what caused this. IIRC she got sick and was prescribed some pain killers. There is a thread on here somewhere where she posted about how she was excited to take the pain killers.

She has a shitty mother and never knew her father. The only remotely reliable person in her life was one of her mother's husbands who adopted her, but he was mostly her daytime drinking buddy when he wasn't in jail.

She was clearly predisposed to substance abuse and mental health problems. And she never developed meaningful relationships with people who could sincerely support her.

This is a terrible situation. Without going into too much detail (although I'll certainly share if anyone is interested), I found out the long, hard way that I was predisposed to substance abuse, and the only way I was able to pull myself into a better place was because of meaningful relationships with people who could sincerely support me.

I feel for anyone who doesn't have that support system. The lack of that makes getting better seem impossible.

I mean, one could argue that some folks have a genetic predisposition to addiction. But I had spinal surgery, pretty painful. I would suppose that it doesn't get much more painful than such a recovery. The dr gave me percocet, and I used them very sparingly knowing what could happen.

Guess what, I didn't get addicted to painkillers. And addiction runs in the family.

Exactly. It's very rarely that simple. There are so many factors that go into it, and sometimes it's the perfect storm of factors, through fault and no fault, that results in substance abuse issues. I'm glad you have a simplistic view; that means you're not affected by it. Keep on keeping on.
