UVA switched to 5 guards in the game to counter UNCW

we need THAT level of coach strategist.

Yeah this is why I worry about Keatts being Gott 2.0. Virginia has a trash offense but was able to come back from that deficit.

I want someone a bit more balanced and steady after the Gott years.

UVA has the #37 offense. Not sure I'd call that trash.

According to what metric? I'm showing rankings of 301 in points and 73 in offensive efficiency.

I didn't know calling the UVA offense stagnant was a controversial point?

virginia's offense is slow paced and not fun to watch. but it's efficient. the #37 is by kenpom's metric.

saw a few posters on PP and Rivals saying Crean should be our new #1 target...god no. please no.

Some of those fuckheads go by name recognition only...They don't actually watch any college basketball outside of NCState or otherwise pay attention. They just want to be a part of the conversation.

I'm impressed by what I see from UNCW on D. I know they generally don't have great defensive rankings, but the bigs seem to know how and when to rotate, help, hedge on screens--unlike our bigs who always look lost.

Everyone looks great compared to us on D. And yeah old PP posters are always wanting a "name" like Rick Barnes. They think you should be able to get a P5 coach. They are clueless. Probably were pissed when we hired a no name from Iona.

[Edited on March 16, 2017 at 2:31 PM. Reason : oh I know. I'm more of a 1) Archie 2) Holtmann 3) Wade before Keatts person but they look good]

Fair enough. I just had not yet seen UNCW play until today and given how Keatts's defensive prowess is put on the same level as Gott's, I was pleasantly surprised.

I'm very impressed. They played Duke hard last year too. I don't think anyone who watched that could should be unhappy if we end up with Keatts.

how does this argument make any sense ? if we had a coach that went 16-17 but we played great defense you'd be fine with it ?

what does "gott 2.0" mean ?!

For the 2017-18 season, it'd be better than going 16-17 while not playing any defense.

what's missing from the "Keatts = Gott 2.0" argument is that Gott's teams (especially the last 2 years) weren't just bad defensively. they often didn't even fucking try on defense. there were very simple defensive concepts - rotating, defending screens, etc - that our team was never capable of doing or even trying to do, really. furthermore, Gott's offenses devolved into letting one guy go one-on-one as much as possible and then having one or two guys just jacking up 3s the last few years. there was no real offensive identity the last few years, even when we were scoring points...there was no flow and rhythm to the offense. with Gott, it wasn't as simple as "good offense, bad defense".

I agree on the defensive "liability" with Keatts but I think it may be a product of the caliber guys he's coaching. These dudes weren't ranked coming out of high school, aren't very tall (6'7 or below), and they didn't have depth either. They basically played 6 guys against UVA. What he's done with that objective lack of talent is build a team that had 29 wins this year. A big part of what hurts them defensively on their Kenpom numbers is also the 3 pointers they allow but that also may be what they're forcing other teams to do. There is no question in my mind that they were hustling today and they do force turnovers very well.

It's total conjecture, but worth arguing that given the caliber recruits that Raleigh/State recruits we'd see massive increases in those numbers. His offensive system definitely works and it's not just a fluke season. He took a dumpster fire and won the conference in year 1, conference and tourney in years 2 and 3.

Archie is/may be the better option but it's still a very impressive resume for Keatts.

PackPride tweeted that Moton is the leading candidate for the Arkansas State job. Would be a nice step up for him.

If we are going to debate it..... in game coaching/motivation/strategy/what have you, I'll take Moton over Keatts.

Still don't think either is a serious candidate for NCSU yet.

Keatts is absolutely a serious candidate

It's Miller as first choice/low probability, Wade/Keatts in some order as 2nd choice higher probability. That's the 3 unless there is some Gottfried/O'Brien darkhorse candidate nobody has mentioned

Moton is good hire for an Arky State type program

He would be a disaster for us. Like when Mizzou hired Kim Anderson disaster

My thinking is that we're waiting to contact Archie until after Dayton is out of the tournament. If he [likely] says no, we move on to Keatts/Wade. How VCU does may impact that decision but I get the feeling Keatts is the realistic front runner right now unless Archie shocks everyone and takes the job. Or a dark horse like others have said.

No way in fuck Moton comes here unless it's as an assistant. Just stop with that. He'd be lucky to get a job at UNCW to back fill Keatts. If it fell past Keatts, I'd imagine we'd look at Pat Kelsey.

nah. kim anderson was an old guy who had spent the 12 previous years as a D2 head coach. Moton is young and has been a D1 head coach for a number of years. sure he's a long shot, but he's still light years better than the "floor" in our previous searches.

it would surprise me to see him leave NCCU for Arkansas State, though. Mainly because Arkansas is such a shitty place.

Wade getting blown out by another mid major doesn't give me confidence. Will see how they come out second half to see if he is good at making the right adjustments to get back into a game.

Theres not a huge difference between D2 and the HBCU conferences. Queens University beat VCU this year. I dont think any MEAC teams would have a shot in hell at beating VCU

ehh..you're not gonna learn a ton from one game. not that watching the game in hopes of learning a bit about his style is useless, it's not. but st. mary's is pretty dang good. i wouldn't read a ton into a single game either way.

one game samples are silly. uncw got blown out by william and mary. dayton had a bad loss to UMass. hell, NC State won @Duke this year.
