Maybe? People get extensions in court cases all the time if things are deemed to be improbable. Someone can find the common law specifics for me. But yes, of course, rich and/or famous people have advantages... but that isn't limited to Trump in any way. There have probably been 100 far more egregious cases in the last year that were of some obscure corporate case that we never even heard of or bothered to discuss.

Bullshit. Any bond company would be chomping at the bit to take a $100mill cut of this game, if Cheeto provided sufficiently liquid assets, i.e. cash or stocks. He either wouldn't, or couldn't. He probably offered property, and no sane person would take that offer here where the whole case is about him massively inflating the valuations of his properties.
To be fair, bond companies will happily take properties as collateral for smaller judgements, but would be insane to do so for one of this size. If the defendant loses his appeal, the bond company is on the hook, and on an expedited timescale. Selling a property doesn't happen overnight. For smaller judgements, they can take that risk, but they certainly won't do so with 500mill on the line. I would also suspect that Trump's assets are structured in such a way as to make it difficult to assign them to a bonding agency (or even possible to revoke or fight that assignment after the fact; never forget how shady this fucker is), even if they were dumb enough to accept it. But this doesn't mean the companies won't do a bond of this size; they just won't do it with properties as the collateral.
Quote : | "They had evidence for approaching many companies for it." |
Bullshit. They had one guy saying it, and his testimony had been severely impeached during this very trial. IIRC, his attorneys honestly didn't offer any hard evidence of bond agencies turning them down, other than this one shady guy's word.
Quote : | "Was there an explanation for why his bond was lowered from $454 to 175 million? And given an additional 10 days to come-up with it?" |
Having said all of that, I suspect the reason for lowering the bond was a couple of things 1) Special treatment because he's Trump 2) A generous understanding of the enormity of the judgement and the very real problems that come with it. The "fire sale" complaints are not entirely without merit, and Cheeto should be able to exhaust his appeals under "fair" circumstances 3) The judge might have gone too far, and the appeals court lowered to something they could more easily justify
The 10-day delay would simply be to allow him to secure it under the newly understood terms. There would be no reason for him to have a 200mill bond waiting in the wings if the court weren't going to accept it. That shit costs money. I'd say the additional delay is reasonable.]3/26/2024 11:32:26 PM |

OK, I guess you're right. He can find someone to bond him for 100mill. He can presumably find someone to bond him for 175mill. But he just can't seem to find anyone willing to bond him for the full amount of the exact same order of magnitude, while taking home 115mill in risk-free money in the process. And, even though he can secure 175mill for this judgement, he's totally unable to get another 100mill and 175mill from 2 other agencies. This totally makes sense.
And, to go further, he can absolutely secure a 450mill bond by paying 570mill in cash and securities except for the agencies' refusals, but he totally can't pay 450mill straight to the State of NY. Trump totally isn't full of shit here...
(Btw, I'm calling bullshit on Trump's absurd claims here, not on you)
Also, the article you provided says exactly what I said: the companies won't take real estate as collateral for a bond of this size. It in no way says they won't do a bond of this size at all.] 3/27/2024 9:05:41 AM |

In case you're curious, here's an article which points out that the claims of being "unable to secure a bond of that size" are wholly attributed to individuals of dubious credibility...
https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2024/03/20/trump-bond-letitia-james-fraud-new-york/
Quote : | "On Wednesday, Dennis Fan, a lawyer for James, told the appeals court that Trump’s claims of striking out with insurance companies are not reliable because they are based on sworn statements from Gary Giulietti, a personal friend of Trump’s, and from Alan Garten, general counsel at the Trump Organization.
Fan wrote that New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron, who oversaw James’s civil trial against Trump, decided Giulietti was not a credible witness. He argued that Garten was involved in the conduct at issue and “has professional interests in this litigation.”" |

Yeah, I agree with that. I also agree with your assessment at the end of the original post. The decision was obviously influenced in some way by the gravitas of the situation and the guy. I just meant that regardless of whether it was dubious or not, it isn't like they didn't even try.
