Just wanted to point out that State is 3rd in FG% defense. For those who think he doesn't coach up defense.
^And that is a horrible statistic.

Just to remind you guys that it's about 50/50 as to whether we win a single one of these next three games.
Remember that before you freak out at the result tonight if we lose.
A win tonight would be huge but a loss doesn't count us out.
This is like the reverse of our shitty non-conference games where a win helps mildly but a loss would have been killer.
Keys:
1) Rebound the basketball. BC is a poor rebounding team, so we can really assert ourselves on the glass to get extra possessions.
2) Defend the perimeter. BC shoots lights out from the outside (though they also shoot efficiently from 2's). One of Sidneys shortcomings as a coach his first three seasons was defending the three pointer as noted here: http://brentroad.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=448882 We turned the corner last season and have been effective thus far this year (though our competition seems to have shot poorly also) but Howell and Leslie in particular have lapses where they leave their man wide open or fall asleep on rotations leaving their man open.
3) Turnovers. We aren't forcing ANY turnovers this year (seriously what the fuck #301 in the nation) and BC isn't committing any (#19 nationally) therefore we can't afford to have any ourselves either. Javi, Lo Brown, and Leslie are the key here obviously since they are the main culprits. Run the offense through Tracy and don't try to get too fancy.
These guys are flat out terrific offensively but horrid defensively. We are pretty balanced on both ends though we're obviously better on offense than defense. If we can just establish our basic offensive sets we should be able to score efficiently enough to help us steal a win tonight.
We're 2:1 dogs in this game but we can do it.

How many years it took to get here is irrelevant, that is a sunk cost.
The shape we are in now is relevant, that is the present good team we have.
The future is of most importance, and that looks very bright.

So TOB has a team that is ranked and losing only a few seniors, wins a bowl, finished tied for 3rd in the ACC, hasn't lost to UNC, and has a good bit of talent coming back and the future is bleak.
But Sidney has a team loaded with talent, not even close to ranked, has not made the NCAA Tournament, has yet to finish higher than 9th in the ACC, has beaten UNC once out of nine times, doesn't have excellent talent coming in and the future is bright.
Ok. 1/11/2011 7:15:15 PM |

The basketball program is in good shape we are getting better and adding talent. Our success the next 4 years will breed even more future success.
The football program the jury is still out on, he'll need a killer class in 2012 to keep us from falling off a cliff soon.
Two road games against borderline tournament teams and a home game against an elite and even arguably #1 team.

I think he's saying the jury is still out for how we look once Wilson leaves, whether it be this year or after next season...Amato looked pretty great when he had Rivers...not so great afterwards...although TOB has a proven track record at BC so I think we'll be ok...point is, the QB is the most important position on a football team, we have the best in the ACC, its realistic to be skeptical of how we do in our first season in the post-RW era
As for bball...lets wait and see the game tonight 1/11/2011 7:26:26 PM |

The jury sure as shit is out on TOB. RW made up for a lot of offensive line problems. We saw first hand our defense with and without Irving the last 2 years. Imagine glennon stuck in the "pocket" with our o-line and no running game.
Talent level is clearly falling off -- we are right now banking on experience to make up for lack of team speed. That's a fair way to make up for deficiencies, but we really want both talent and experience. On the football team, the lower level of talent puts an upper limit on how good we can be. Contrast that to the basketball team, where the raw talent is good enough to win big on a national stage.
TOB also refuses to get rid of crap coordinators like Archer. The coaching staff still makes deliberate decisions to lose such as in the clemson and umd games.

I think the OLine will be much improved next year. we still started 4 sophmores. Next year is put-up-or-shut-up year, though, I'll agree.
Last year's defense sucked becuase we started 3 freshmen and a JUCO transfer in the secondary and 2 frosh's at LB. While Irving obviously was a huge part of this year's improvement, I think our D would have been tremendously improved even without him.
Point being is we sucked in 09 predominantly becuase we were young. We return a ton on next years team...and even without RW...we should be able to win 8+ games with our schedule.

if anybody looks at this objectively, our football and basketball programs have been crap the last 4-5 years, relative to the rest of the ACC...with the exception of football this season, and the last few bball games with Tracy if you want to get really detailed
Lowe is on the hot-seat...this is his make-or-break season, with the talented freshman class
O'Brien was on the hot-seat last year...three seasons, all finishing below .500
its pretty fucking dumb to act like either coach has done enough to warrant 100% confidence in the future...TOB has had 1 good season in 4...Lowe has had a few good games and late season stretches in 4 seasons and change
that said, I think TOB was hurt a lot by injuries, and again, he has a track record at Boston College
I think Lowe has been around basketball enough, as a player and assistant coach, to know how to win games, and the current freshmen are good examples of how he has gone from zero college experience, to being able to sign 5-star recruits, all in 4 years
and, no disrespect to TOB, but unlike TOB, Lowe actually went to State and led us to one of the two national titles that make half of you people have such high fucking expectations in the first place...which is odd considering some of you were content with the previous 10 year, 1 sweet-16 appearance mediocrity
while I liked Herb, he seemed to improve over the first 6-7-8 years then plateau
Lowe seems to be improving, and some of you are ready to call it quits when he's still getting better] 1/11/2011 7:39:24 PM |

The above posts echo my sentiments pretty well.
I'm not anti Tom O Brien.
I think every single season you can say we got better as the season went on except for this year when we peaked a little early and then tightened up under the pressure.
A great QB masks a lot of problems and we certainly had one of those.
Let's see how we do when he's gone. I have a sinking feeling we'll be significantly worse for wear. It's not just RW we're losing, its the WR's, Irving, etc....
And we haven't recruited well to replace these guys.
It's not like basketball where the improvement in the program is inarguable. 1/11/2011 7:52:04 PM |
