I was out at my parents again last weekend and worked on my ringflash a little more. Last time it was held together with duct tape and some printer paper as a diffuser. This time its a little sturdier and I was able to play with it some more.

I ended up getting a Yongnuo 565 flash from Amazon. They seem to have mixed reviews. I wish first party flashes were more affordable. If this turns out to be shit at least I can return it to amazon.

6D Body and Chinese knockoff flash arrived. Quick blast of my dog to see high ISO noise. Much better than the Rebel. Better than I expected at ISO 3200.

What are you using for the ring flash? I built a DIY one long ago, but lost interest in it and adapted it to mock a macro twin lite's effects. I still use it for some of the macro shots I take.



This was the first one I put together. The reflective part simply fit over the dome/diffused part. I modified the windows on the reflective part later on to be smaller and situated in the 10:00/2:00 positions.

Mine's made from an old dog food bowl and a couple of cheap parts I got at Home Depot.

It works decently as a replacement for a beauty dish, though now that I've done this I may just make a dedicated beauty dish since they should be a lot easier to piece together.

I'll dig it back out in a day or two and get some photos. It was a pretty simple build and the 1.0 version I used for the photos on the last page was made completely with some stuff I had laying around the house.

Color on this is messed up and I am not sure how to fix it. Foreground is lit by strobe at camera left and the ambient light is early sunset (slightly orange tinted). Adjusting the white balance for the foreground made the sand look like brown sugar. And of course my wife looks amazing and I look like a tool.

For some reason if I export a JPG from Lightroom or Photoshop, it looks fine in most applications and ... wrong in others. This is the same file opened in MS Photo Viewer (left) and MS Paint (right). The color temperature is way off when opened in Paint. I took some photos to the Walmart photo center (yeah I don't have a photo printer) to be printed and all of them came out with color problems.

The originals are 8 bits per channel sRGB. I don't know a lot about the JPG file format, but short of saving the files as device independent bitmaps, how can I get better compatibility with the pictures? I assume there is some color space or white balance info being saved by Photoshop that is being ignored by some programs.

They were shot in my brother's living room. The walls are off white, white ceiling, and a cream colored carpet. I just used a diffused and bounced flash pointed at the wall over the dogs with the flash power at 1/2. The reflection was strong enough to blow out the walls and carpet. Didn't really do any postprocessing besides remove a squirrel trap from the left of the frame.

If you're in the RDU area I could show you a few things. Mostly its just about getting out and practicing.

So my youngest has to wear glasses, and we've been working with him over the last week to get comfortable with them and stop pulling them off his face. He won't wear them all day yet, but we can get him to wear them for 20 minutes at a time now.

I celebrated by dressing him up in a suit someone gave us that he'll never wear and taking some photos in the kitchen

Yeah that was a fun little take on "Come here and help me get your brother to look at the camera"
I thought he understood I needed him to stand with me to draw his attention to the lens...instead he grabbed his cheeks like handlebars and turned his head to face me.

And I have a camera on me all the time, so they're kinda used to it being around. Even with that, a lot of times when we do little projects like this, I end up spending 10 minutes clicking with the intention of just getting them used to it. Once they get bored with the camera i can get them to turn their attention to something that gets the to smile and have fun.

Puppies won't hold still for more than 1/50 sec other than to poo on the carpet. So hard to get a picture. I gave up and had her momma pick her up.

I was too cheap to buy a softbox so I made one instead. Got a (new) lamp shade and a clean white sheet at the thrift store for $9 total. Lined the lamp shade with aluminum foil and cut a piece of the sheet to cover the bottom of the lamp shade. All glued together with craft glue. It hangs from my flash diffuser with the flash mounted on a tripod.

I took a test shot with my T3i. I had to use the built-in flash to trigger the off-camera because I am still waiting on the radio triggers to be delivered for the 6D. Cant wait to try this out for portraits.

Next time, if you wanna spend less:

one gallon water jug (less than a dollar)
appropriately sized isopropyl alcohol or acetone bottle (about a dollar, only fits certain flashes)

cut the top off the bottle, cut a spot to insert it into the water jug, slide the flash inside the alcohol/acetone bottle, shoot.

I don't want to read through 218 pages of posts.

I'm looking for suggestions of good Digital SLR cameras.. Nikon, Canon, Sony? It's going to be used for general photography, vacations, etc.

Do you use interchangeable lenses a lot? What's the most versatile lens?

This is gonna sound more douchey than intended, but....

That's like asking what kind of car to buy, you'll just use it for general driving needs, work, grocery store etc.

There are a lot of factors to consider when getting a camera, and even though a lot of people think DLSR trumps everything, there are a lot of great little pocket cameras on the market now.

Check http://www.dpreview.com/ for some great breakdowns of each camera.

Do your research, figure out a budget and more specifics on what you plan on doing with it. You want vacation shots, does that mean sunlit volleyball games on the beach or candlelit dinners in the hotel room, etc.

Narrow it down to some options and come back, and even then you're probably better suited to getting better advice from a more active online photography community.

That's totally fair.

Currently I have these cameras:

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8 (purchased in Nov. 2011, 14.1MP, 16X digital zoom)


Nikon COOLPIX AW100 Waterproof (purchased in May 2013, 16MP)


Both take good pictures and the Nikon was great in Costa Rica when we were hiking in the rain, repelling down waterfalls, white water rafting, etc.

there really is no need, these days, to buy a dslr just for general photography. like he said ^ ... be a little more specific with your photography needs. buying a dslr and some good glass, a flash, filters, memory cards, good camera bag, etc is an expensive hobby. you'd could be looking at spending well over 1,000$ bucks, out of the gate, if you're the least bit interested as pursuing it as a hobby.

I'm comfortable with the cameras we currently have and really don't want a huge camera to lug around during while travelling. It's my husband who believes a DSLR is the way to go for our next camera purchase.

a couple of months ago i dumped my DSLR setup and went bridge with the fujifilm X-S1 because i realized that i never switched from my 18-200mm lens



the only thing i miss about my gear is the flash/TTL...other than that, i'm glad to have a spectacularly well-performing all-in-one...it has nearly all the manual controls (including a focus ring and manual, non-servo zoom), large EXR sensor (2/3", and EXR is great), and an acceptable zoom range (24-624mm)...it has its issues, but for the money (i paid $220 from amazon) and convenience, it's one of the best bang-for-your-buck options

if you're interested in a bridge ultrazoom, i just (literally, this morning) bought the fujifilm HS50EXR from amazon warehouse for $208: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00ATM1MGA/

the sensor is smaller (1/2"), but newer (and replaces contrast with phase detection for fast AF)...same plethora of manual control and huge zoom range (24-1000mm)...and amazon will pay to have you ship it back if you don't like it within 30 days

I'd look considerably at some good point and shoots.

I've been contemplating getting a powershot to keep on me everyday. My 5d, even with the pancake lens is cumbersome when I don't need it, but the iPhone in my pocket takes shitty photos.

A little Powershot would be easy to keep on me and do 10x the job my phone does.

You can also get an underwater case for point and shoots pretty cheap. These are great because it gives you freedom to take it almost everywhere, especially on vacation. You don't need to worry about sand and water gumming it up on the beach, you can toss it around in the waves or take it out kayaking. Its small enough that you can mount it like a go-pro for a lot of applications like crazy selfies or videos.

Im looking for advice, as well.


I plan on finding a DSLR to use for mostly outdoor and wildlife photography. I am constantly outdoors hiking, fishing or hunting. I can easily see myself becoming more into photographing animals than catching or killing them

I also love to make short videos of hunting and fishing trips. I would like to find a DSLR that is conducive to this. I guess the most important features would be auto focus and low light performance.

Any advice? Thoughts on buying used equipment?

Also, who has experience with go-pros? I know they can be set up for timelapse, but do they function well for stills?
My brother-in law did some great video work over our family vacation with a go-pro while fishing. Its a very versatile little shooter and is extremely easy to carry on you. It won't have the benefits of long lenses, but the ability to stick it on the end of a pole and shoot fish going after bait was a pretty cool thing to watch.

Anybody doing cloud storage for their photos? I currently do not, but I do sync my Lightroom catalog on Google Drive to keep my home and work libraries on the same page.

So MS is going to offer unlimited cloud storage with Office 365. I am really pumped about this. I am going to continue to do my own backups locally at two locations, but it will give me an additional backup system that is backed up by multiple data centers, etc. The only downside I can think of is obviously is the system is breached and the photos got online. Granted I don't do boudoir shoots or anything to be "concerned" about, but previously cloud storage was insufficient to cover the entirety of my photo library. Now it is not.

^ 365 is a subscription service, yes? so you pay $80 for 4 years (university price), but after that you lose your unlimited storage unless you continue to pay?

don't get me wrong, $20/year for unlimited storage isn't bad (i could take or leave 365, but i realize that's a nice bonus)...for some reason i just don't like subscription-based cloud storage services

if ncsu offers 4 years for $10 through the home use program, though, i'll be all over it

I can't remember the last time Flickr actually made me login. I'm continuously logged in across 2 laptops, a desktop, and 2 phones. However, I also do not use yahoo for anything else, so the last time I actually did have to log in (probably >6 months ago) I had to end up changing the password

Anyone get a Sony A7 (r)? My buddy picked one up with the 28-70. The camera is spectacular and the photos are amazing. It's nice carrying it around as well. Being able to have a full frame camera in such a small package. Me want.
