"I'm getting close to my upgrade date with AT&T. Going to have to make two big decisions:

- Switching to Verizon, and

- Switching to an iphone.

Switching to Verizon all depends on what kind of deal I can get. I pay about $105 a month for my data plan with AT&T. My gf somehow pays $80 for the same plan at Verizon. If I can swing that, I might jump over. Or if we can get a joint plan that also lowers the bill. We'll see...but I've actually had a good relationship and good coverage with AT&T/Cingular during my 12+ year run with them.

The Iphone/Android is going to be a little tougher. I love my Samsung Captivate...but it definitely has the "computer problems" (freezes, lags...does all the things computers do when they're overworked or too full). I know a lot of that has to do with the fact I have very little storage on my phone. I do love the size and quality of the screen. Battery life is starting to struggle a little bit, but its still pretty solid.

By update time, I will have a Macbook Pro for the office, regular macbook for home, and possibly even an ipad. Shouldn't I just get an iphone to sync everything up easily. I'm not a big techie that needs an Android platform to do all of my own shit.

What say you?"

with all the other Mac stuff you have I'd say go with the iPhone. I did exactly what you are talking about. Dropped AT&T, joined a family plan on Verizon with my wife and got the iPhone. I have no regrets EXCEPT for no 4G LTE with the iPhone 4S.

Is there a way to turn off iMessage when I am not connected to wifi so that it uses my texting plan and not my data plan? It would be a huge pain to turn this off every time manually.

my wife's iphone 4 will only allow her to hear calls with speaker phone turned on... she says the screen won't show that a connection is made, but if she calls me (w/out speaker phone on) i can actually hear her fine, but she can't hear me at all - but, if she switches to speaker, everything works fine

a hard reset fixed it temporarily (about a day), but then it went back... most recent hard reset didn't work

any ideas or anybody had the same problem?

^i've been having issues with speakerphone & the proximity sensor, and i read that resetting all settings might fix it. idk if that will fix your issue but it's worth a shot. general > reset > reset all settings

^^why do you want to disable imessage like that?

^^^Pretty much you have to turn iMessage on and off when you are on data vs wifi. Though iMessage doesn't take a ton of data so I'd say you're probably safe on a 2gb plan. Id consider this a fringe case and I wouldn't expect apple to change it.

I don't know about the screen, but the next time it happens, try adjusting the volume on the iPhone and see if the phone says it's adjusting the headset volume. Sometimes you get something down in the jack there that shorts the contacts and makes the phone think that headphones are plugged in.

It's text. Do you know how many billion texts you could send with 2GB of data? Even with the overhead of the actual service, I can't imagine how many thousands of messages you'd have to send before it would use a noticeable amount of data. My mom is on the 250MB plan and sends a few hundred iMessages a month and still comes in well under her limit (last month she had 80MB of usage)

TL;DR don't worry about it.

Okay cool. It isn't often that I'm not on wifi, but when I am in the car or the store and *gasp* I still text.

I was curious, and I googled it and this guy ran a packet sniffer to find out exactly how much data was used. His conclusion:

Quote :
"As several people have pointed out even if you're a mega-texter say 5,000 texts per month, and if those were all iMessages it would only use 7.7 MB of your data plan. So if you're trying to squeak by on a 200 MB/mo plan (like I am) you'd still have 192.3 MB left after 5,000 iMessages.
"

So yeah, it's really nothing to worry about. Unless, of course, you send and receive a lot of picture/video messages.

How many people in here have cracked their iphone screen before??

I'm considering the switch from android phone to iphone (as posted about previously), but I have a pretty severe issued with dropping my phone. I have a pretty slim case on my Samsung Android, yet with all the times I've dropped it, not a scratch or a crack. Back when I had my blackberry, I probably had to replace it three or four times and something was always chipped/cracked/scratched from my drops.

I see a lot of cracked iphones...didn't know if that was because there are more iphones in general, or because they are less "sturdy."

I dropped my iPhone 3G the 2nd day I had it ~3ft from my lap to rough asphalt while getting out of my truck. No damage just a scratch on the black plastic.

I've dropped my iPhone 4 a few times with the apple bumper on it, mostly inside on hardwoods or tile, not a scratch so far.
My wife is pretty clumsy and has dropped her iPhone 4 with a thin TPS case quite a few times, sometimes batting it higher in the air trying to catch it. No damage to hers either.

Our 10 month old likes to drop them and use them as drumsticks whenever he gets ahold of them. So far, *knock on wood,* we haven't had any problems, and the 4 has glass on the front and back.

Our office has had 7 3GSs in the past & currently has 7 4s & a 4S, nobody has ever cracked a screen. These people beat the shit out of them but so far the glass has stayed intact.

The use of Gorilla Glass is pretty standard now so the glass on the iPhone is the same as most of your Driod phones. I would say the iPhone glass may be a bit more resistant to shock due to its smaller form factor.

just get a good case and you wont ever have to worry with it.

well worth a $70 case to not have to think about OMG I DROPPED IT! Thats why I went with Lifeproof.

Waterproof and Shock resistant.

If you sell the phone, the added protection a case provides pays for itself.

I, too, have dropped all of my iPhones many times and been lucky enough to never break the glass.

I think it's pretty funny that of the handful of replies, everyone that actually OWN and USE iPhones seem to say positive things and the one negative thing posted is from a known iPhone hater.

Just putting that into proper perspective.

My twin boys (1.5yo) have beaten the hell out of my 3GS and it keeps on going. They haven't managed to crack the screen yet. A rubber case seems to be all it needs to deal with them.

But I don't know how the current generation would hold up to similar abuse.

I've always kept mine in cases, except my iPhone 4 when the case broke. The one day I used it out of the case I dropped it on Hillsboro Street and chipped the glass on the front and back at the top of the phone. Didn't crack, but fucked up the resale value liek whoa

^i've dropped my ip4 on concrete 3 or 4 times

i was lucky as hell each time. it hit the same corner each time. screen is perfectly fine. but that corners grill is toe up

I dropped my iphone 4 dozens of times with no damage until finally scratching the glass on gravel. Put it in a case for a few months until my Dad bought his and gave him the case. Shortly after it fell out of my truck and hit a curb perfectly on the edge and shattered the front glass. My replacement is back in a case. I definitely prefer it naked but the exposed edges are a massive weak point. From now on, it'll stay in at least a bumper. Gorilla Glass or not, edges of glass are much weaker than the surfaces.

So I'm getting an iPhone 4s for work (was that or a Droid Incredible or a blackberry, will get the iphone every time in those options). The discussion on this page is pretty good about cases and dropping it - what case does everyone suggest to get?

^It depends on what sort of balance you want between protection and size/cost.

If you want total confidence and don't care about the phone being bulky, then go with something like an otter box or lifeproof.

If you want to keep your phone compact and thin, aren't clumsy and aren't that worried about dropping your phone but want just a little piece of mind for "just in case" of a drop or two, then go with something simple like a bumper.

In between those, there is a myriad of soft cases (silicone, TPS) and rigid cases (polycarbonate, etc.) available in all kinds of shapes with varying protection levels.

I'd suggest looking around the internet, they're so cheap you can get 2 or 3 and see which one you like the best or switch 'em around depending on what you're doing. Like beef up the protection if you're going snowboarding or something like that. Here's a decent place to start browsing:

IS250tim..i bought the CaseCrown Glider Slim Fit Case for Apple iPhone 4 and 4S off Amazon for $10. I love this case!! Its slim, has a great finish that is just tacky enough to hold onto easily but also slide in pocket easy. fit and finish is top notch.

Just upgraded to 5.0.1 and kept my baseband (1.59.00) after jailbreaking with RedSn0W.

Only issue is it always shows one bar of signal regardless of actual strength. Appears to be a baseband issue. I'd like to keep the baseband for travel and when I sell it. Anyone having this issue? Just started searching for solutions.

**Update: so if you actually unlock it with Ultrasn0w and respring it'll fix the issue.

Man...work is making me get a cell phone owned by them and will no longer reimburse me for mine.

I have a 4. Should I get another 4 or a Motorola Photon....on Sprint. Should I go with what I know to be good or go with a 4G capable phone?

I will be keeping the 4 as my personal...so its either get another of the same or change it up.

What about it doesn't compute? They ran out of gas and need to walk to a gas station to get some more.

two things

1. if the iPhone was worth a shit (which it is), they wouldn't have run out of gas in the first place, they would've been able to find a gas station before they ran out of gas...i'm sure their Prius or Suburban or whatever spectrum of vehicle they drove has a low fuel light

2. (the main one), i think the idea was "Any convenience stores we can walk to so we can buy groceries/beverages/etc?" and they said gas stations instead...not to get political but to me it seemed like "we are environmentally responsible people, can you find me a corner store we can walk to for basic shopping needs" but it comes across as "dur, we aren't driving but we need a gas station"

^ You're a fucking idiot.

They took a wrong turn and got stuck in the middle of nowhere. Before finding the way out, they ran out of gas. Happy?

gas gauge is broken, car overheated and want to get water/coolant, accessory belt broke and want to check for a repair kit (less common now but...), oil light came on and pulled over so want to get more oil before fucking their engine up.

All logical reasons that they may walk to a gas station. If you want to talk about dumb commercials, how about Samsung's new one where the guy is using Google Navigation to walk to meet his friends? How about the WinPhone7 commercials that basically tell you smart phones are dumb so you should buy... a smart phone? You can throw Apple's "Rock God" ad in there too.

See, this I can potentially agree with. I don't see why having an iPhone or any other phone would factor into the situation at all however. You don't run out of gas because your phone doesn't tell you where a gas station is, you run out of gas because you don't pay attention to the gauges. I suppose if they had one of those bluetooth ODB-II sensors on the car (although the car in the commercial looks like it could be pre ODB-II era) then you could factor your smart phone into the equation, but if not, I don't know why that would be the first thing that jumped into your head.

As far as the "we are environmentally responsible people, can you find me a corner store we can walk to for basic shopping needs" issue, I'm going to have to agree with dave421's brilliant assessment of your logical skills on that one. The entire commercial is about a cross country road trip. They are driving on a 3000+ mile road trip in what looks to be a ~25 year old Volvo station wagon which probably got 20 MPG brand new and would be lucky to see 15 now. I doubt they would stop in the middle of nowhere, park on the side of the road and then decide to randomly walk to a gas station.

Just all over the place up in here.
