and, as much as I like SA, I personally don't really care for carrying cocked & locked. I much prefer the idea of carrying my XDm--striker fired (~DAO, kind of) with a grip safety. Oh, and 2-3x the capacity, and lighter.

Hey guy wants to trade me a M&P 357 With a bunch of ammo, I holster, four magazines. For one of my ARs. How is the resale on the 357? I don't think I would like to keep it, but if it's easier to sell that maybe I should go for it?

I wouldn't do it if you don't want to keep the gun. With that caliber it will be hard to find a buyer, you are better off sticking to the standard calibers if you want to sell it.

You can swap barrels and shoot .40 out of that gun if you like that better.
Factory FMJ goes for about $.50 a round. The magazines are $25 each, but two come with the gun. The gun itself might get $450.

I personally wouldn't trade unless it is heavily in your favor, or you might decide to keep the gun.

My Sig P938 Extreme came in 5 minutes before my LGS was closing but they stayed late to do the transfer.

This gun was born on April 26, 2013.

Put about 200 rounds through it this morning (PMC 115gr x 100, Fiocchi 115gr x 50, Federal 124gr x 40, and ~20 Remington Golden Sabers 124gr) without a hiccup sans a FTE that was caused shooting unsupported off-hand (limp wrist).

*124gr is way overpriced in my area and I found 115 cheap. Golden Sabers are not my EDC bullet but I wanted to test some form of JHP while waiting on my Speer Gold Dots in 124grs +P.

This gun is pretty accurate for such a short sight radius (@25 yards your groups open up) and for some reason I was shooting better w/out the 7 round magazine but this by no means is a range toy.

It did take some tinkering to dial in my groups; at first I was way high of point of aim but some trigger and hand position fixed that.

The only other problem(s) I noticed that seem to be common - but rather annoying in such an expensive gun - is the magazine round stripping issue and loose grip screws.

Now that I got my IWB holster from ETW, this is going to be my EDC gun. Also bought a Remora for carrying without a belt and trying to find someone to make me an ankle rig for work.

My impression on seeing the output of industrial metal 3D printers is that producing a gun would be trivial. I've see rather complex manifolds done in titanium that make an AR lower look like something a child could make. Of course I think these machines make 5-axis milling machine look cheap.

Man, I bought a super cheap Mossberg 535 (just because), and the receiver inside looks like an ape machined it with his elbow.

I mean the gun seems to function just fine, but come on. Part of me wondered if I was too rough with it putting it back together and marred something with the action bars? These guns are supposed to be pretty rugged though, so I seriously doubt that. I'm going to see if some of these burrs and whatnot take care of themselves through normal use before I try sanding anything.

Anyway, it doesnt seem to like really cheap 2 3/4 shells so far.

haha, yeah i'm usually clean shaven, but my DTI Evolution wears a CTR, and when I didn't shave for a couple of weeks on leave, it was a total sonofabitch to shoot.

the MOE might not do it, but i had a CTR that pulled my beard hairs out in bunches. didn't matter if i locked the friction lock or not. sold it to baonest and got an A2.

Do you even have to shave it, or has the CTR plucked it for you to the point that it doesn't grow anymore?

Luckily for you a Glock is probably the easiest gun to take care of. Super easy to take don and it really doesn't matter too much if you even clean it

^ I have a buddy who I think is running an experiment with his Glock. I'm pretty sure it's never been cleaned but I know it has well over 10,000 rounds through it.

I clean my glocks about every 5k rounds. Just from laziness. I don't have problems with them even when they are that dirty.

My first pistol was a G27 3rd Gen. I still have it and have sent about 3k rounds down it. It's an amazing pistol.

The G26 recoil is much more tame, so its easier to shoot tight groupings when shooting multiple times between breaks.

I went with the .40 out of personal preference, but you can't go wrong with either.

I usually clean my glocks after each outing. Its simple to do and I enjoy the process as much as I do the shooting itself.

Does having your gun's action slicked up by a famous gunsmith increase its value? Decrease? No diff?

If so would you say its worth exactly what you put in and keep the receipts?

Depends on the buyer. In general, I would say no. Some few cases, maybe.
Again, it depends. Some people complete the Vickers 4-day 1911 build class, and his 1911s run $4k.
No where near worth it IMO, but some people pay it.

yeah, there's a significant difference between say, a 1911, a Glock, and a SIG. You will probably have a preference. I'd try to shoot a variety of pistols and see what that preference is before you buy something.

So what is everyone's SHTF rifle - one that would be their go-to gun if they could only take one with them? I don't think I'm quite convinced of the Cooper Scout concept over something simple like a reliable AR-15 with a reflex site and backup irons. I've also waffled over whether a 5.56 is really the right choice over a 7.62 round. It's lighter, but it might not be very effective for hunting mule dear and bear.

I've thought about turning my M1A scout into a SHTF gun.

I would go with the next AR-15 I am going to build but if I don't have that luxury first it would be my current one with an Aimpoint on it (and I have a 3x magnifier I could throw on as well). I trust my SPR build more because I used top notch components in it but it only has a 10x scope and it is not the lightest thing in the world. Same problem with my AR-10.

I've never really given thought to a SHTF gun, because I don't really have even a passing fear of anything like that happening...and even if it did, I would probably be inclined to get the fuck outta town and ride things out in Europe or South America or something.

...but just for the sake of argument, I'd probably be perfectly happy with my AR (Del-Ton Evolution with an Eotech and flip-up irons). I could kill anything that breathes, man or beast, within at least a thousand miles of FL with it, at pretty much any practical range (I can consistently hit a torso-target at 500 yards with a shitty military M-16 and iron sights, so a free-floated AR with a 2-stage trigger and Eotech would certainly do the job).

Without knowing exactly how things might "HTF," one might be inclined to have several choices (configuration, caliber, etc), instead of trying to put all your eggs in one basket and then being fucked.

Get a couple Garands, stockpile ammo. Have at least one bolt gun in 30-06 too.

Have another bolt gun in an easy-to-stockpile caliber, like 303 or 8mm.

Have at least one AK or AR (or both) and stockpile that caliber.

Get a 9mm handgun. Get a 12ga shotgun. Stockpile ammo.

All these things would probably last longer than your food and water supply. Stockpile those.

Oh look, this reminds me of a show on TLC or something.

i think the whole shtf gun thing is pretty damn stupid, but i'll play along.

i'd grab my AR. actually, i'd grab my wife's because hers has irons and mine is scoped. i think .223 is an excellent balance of versatility, power, and weight per round.

if we're allowed to grab a side-arm, i'd get my Ruger Mark II Target. ammo is (usually) pretty easy to find. i can take small game out to 30 yards or so.

assuming i've got a decent amount of ammo on hand, my Garand wouldn't be a bad choice either, but that bitch is heavy.
