Not that I know of, though a number of developers have consolidated large pieces of property with the intent of developing/rebuilding.

Unfortunately, it's a lot harder to borrow money for such projects now so many are on hold.

I think the city feels like it fixed the "street" and "traffic flow" situation with this renovation. The lions share of the revitalization will have to come from private enterprise, and banks that are willing to fund projects, restaurants, retail, etc.

The new Noodle and Dumpling shop is awesome, I went for lunch today.

Food is reasonably priced, delicious, and the service was great.

A+ will go again!

My fiance was in the outer lane, attempting to go straight through the big round about near the belltower when this guy comes flying straight through from the center lane and almost hit us broadside. It was stressful.

^^^ That is true. The street looks a lot nicer, but won't be truly revitalized until they get some new businesses in there that will draw people on Friday and Saturday night. Whatever new businesses that would want to go there though have to get through all the ordinances that the Hillsborough neighborhoods has in place.

I hope that along with that Stanhope project, North Hall can get some major renovations done to make it a more attractive option. Putting more student housing over there would help out as well.

I agree that the street looks really nice and I commend the city for it but the eyesores that are nearly every building across from the university really detracts from their hard work. I hope that the private sector can truly complete the revitalization in the near future.

The City of Raleigh shared the following information regarding Hillsborough Street parking. I know we are all very excited about the completion of the project and our new "front door" to campus.

Parking Enforcement:
Pay stations (parking meters) and space numbers have been installed and tested, but are covered with bags and go into service when the regulatory 2-hour metered parking signs are installed - anticipated by August 13.

Two hour metered parking will be in effect on Hillsborough Street from Maiden Lane to Brooks Avenue. The City hopes to create turnover of parking spaces to benefit Hillsborough Street businesses. The parking rate at the new pay stations is $1/hr up to a maximum of two hours. The meters accept both coin and credit card (Visa / Mastercard) transactions. Repeat metering is not permitted and citations will be issued for exceeding the 2-hr time limit - $20 fine.

City-employed Field Agents are equipped with handheld ticket-writers that communicate with the new pay stations so they immediately know when a space has expired and how much time was purchased. Photos are taken of every vehicle issued a citation for identification purposes.

Parking in residential neighborhoods north of Hillsborough Street

Please remind students that most of the residential areas north of Hillsborough Street are under a Residential Permit program 24/7 which requires that no vehicle may park on the street for longer than two (2) hours without a valid residential permit. Signs are posted to this effect on every residential street that is under the program; continuously patrolled and enforced.

Note: A better low-cost commuter alternative is a Varsity Commuter Permit, $99 for the academic year, two bus routes - one new express route (Varsity Rt. 5a) with service to the core campus (D. H. Hill Library area) every eleven minutes.

Accessible Parking

Under a revised ordinance approved by City Council in February, 2010, while people with mobility issues (those possessing an accessible parking placard from the Department of Motor Vehicles) are still permitted to park for an unlimited amount of time at City parking meters, they must now pay for on-street parking. Users can press a button on the pay stations that allows them to bypass the time-limit restriction and pay for as much time as they need.

City of Raleigh verbiage: A $100 fine will be issued to any vehicle parked under handicapped time without a valid handicapped placard displayed in the vehicle.

I'm coming down for the Western game ... excited to see the new street and roundabouts. Wish someone would do some touch-up work on the barber shop next to Bell Tower Mart. A new coat of paint would go a long way there.

Can we get some new pics up here for the out-of-towners?

Knocking down that barber shop is a good start. A lot of buildings up and down Hillsborough need to be redone and they need pretty badly to get some more attractive businesses in there. I heard they're redoing the North Dorms soon also. Hopefully with the Stanhope Project thing going up and new North Dorms, there can be more students up and down the street.

I love the roundabouts at least in theory, but I'll be hella glad when people learn how to drive through them.

That being said, I did have a hard time when my mental map was turned around and I was approaching that ^^^ roundabout (2nd photo). I had thought I was coming from another direction and got a free trip around the roundabout to orient myself.

fun times.

Drove the roundabout for the first time last week. Idiot chick in front of me came to a full stop even though no one was in the circle when we were approaching it Had to lay the horn smack down on her ass.

I'd rather someone be extra cautious while approaching an unfamiliar traffic pattern than to blindly haul ass through it without understanding the dynamics.

Quote :
"The end of construction on Hillsborough Street is eliciting mixed reactions from merchants, motorists and pedestrians.

The revamped road features several changes, most notably the single lane running in each direction. Also added are two new roundabouts near N.C. State University, wider sidewalks, center medians and new parking spaces. Further east, a third roundabout replaces the Y-shaped junction with Morgan Street.

John Moyer, owner of Shakedown Street, a music pub that fronts the thoroughfare, said he is pleased by the additions. The Knightdale resident has faced unusual challenges since opening his pub in January, namely finding parking for bands to unload their equipment before concerts.

Moyer said he hopes decreased traffic backups on the road will make it easier for bands to park temporarily and unpack their instruments.

"The roundabouts are a great design," Moyer said. "Once people get used to them, traffic will flow so much better. It is visually a 100 percent improvement."

Other businesses, like Hillsborough Street Textbooks, still face challenges even if traffic moves at a faster pace down the street. Store manager Christine Murray, a Raleigh resident, said stocking her shop with large book shipments may prove problematic in the future because of the road's new one-lane status.

"Just making the road smaller is silly to me," she said. "Eighteen-wheelers make our deliveries, and they don't have room to park."

The new brick medians offer a refuge for NCSU students crossing the street as they will no longer be forced to brave four lanes of traffic. Patrick Easters, an engineering sophomore, said he feels safer with the new crosswalks in place.

"I can access the local businesses by campus without getting hit," he said. "I feel like I can experience more of Raleigh now."

Joslyn Brenton, a graduate student in sociology, said she no longer gets trapped in traffic while riding her motorized scooter. In particular, she is happy that traffic backups no longer occur near Hillsborough Street and Oberlin Road, thanks to the new roundabout.

"In the grand scheme of things, the construction was a temporary inconvenience," Brenton said. "I'm totally psyched about the new arrangements here."

Others are skeptical the road's changes will bring positive results. Mark Pool, a Raleigh resident and avid bicyclist, said he rides on Hillsborough five or six days a week to pick up organic products from Global Village Organic Coffee, across from campus.

With Hillsborough still without designated bicycle lanes until fall, he said, he worries he will get in another accident like the three he has suffered elsewhere. Pool broke his right femur in a collision near Cameron Village, and he also shattered both wrists after going over the hood of a vehicle in the same area.

"It is still dangerous to bike Hillsborough Street, so at times I ride the sidewalk," Pool said while straddling his 26-year-old Diamond Back bike. "Those are sidewalks, not side rides."

Kate Owens, a Smithfield resident who commutes to Creative Tees & Imaging on the street, said her drive seems easier with construction finished.

"Now it is wider, bigger and easier to get around," she said.

I see what he did there.

I know that State has bought some property on Hillsborough Street so that in the coming months/years they can demolish some of the older buildings and put up newer ones to attract better and nicer businesses. The only thing the street needs know is for the businesses to update their store fronts and for more businesses to open. If those don't happen then all this street renovation is a huge waste of money.

I was in Raleigh today and decided to give the Hillsborough roundabout a try. Heading south from Oberlin, I entered the outer lane as a dude in an Expedition entered the inner lane, also from Oberlin. My target was to head west on Hillsborough, so just a quarter of the circle, in and out. But Expedition Man decided to just cut straight the fuck across my lane, from the inner lane straight onto Hillsborough. Traffic down Hillsborough was awful, but I hope that's just because of the start of the semester. Sidewalks were nice, storefronts still shitty.

at first i was a bit annoyed by people who stop rather than yield, but i have found myself stopping unless the coast is completely clear.

i have found that while the people in the circle IN THEORY have right of way because they are in the circle and already adhering to the pattern of the lines, the reality is that you need to yield because they might as well be driving through with both hands out the sunroof screaming in terror, because it's like the lines aren't even there. best to just wait.

Almost got sideswiped again today. I don't understand. There's a picture telling you that you have to go left on the inside lane (heading west). I think we need a giant flashing sign and people offering to hold your hand as you drive through. Or maybe valet roundabout navigation.

heard from two different people that the morgan street roundabout was done incorrectly (concrete fail) and has to be redone.

for what it's worth, it was done by a different contractor than the one who did the rest of the street (ham omelet)

Looks like the Electric Co building is getting a Pink Berry knockoff called "Fresh Berry".

Not to be confused with the "LaBerry" I found in Savannah last month or the "YoFrutt" I found in Chapel Hill over the weekend.

I had thought the one at Porter's was going forward--the gf talked to someone who waits tables there earlier in the summer and that person had told her it was in progress. Did they start then stop?

Disappointing if so. I was looking forward to being able to enjoy some NC pints while looking over Hillsborough Street from a lofty perch.

I made the Expedition's mistake by accidently being in the inner lane when I only needed to make a 1/4 turn.
I did not want to be "THAT" asshole so instead of swerving off onto Hillsbourgh street, I *GASP ZOMG took an
extra ride on the loop such that I was on the outside by the time my circle complete. What is so fucking hard
for people to understand that it takes 10 whole seconds (at most) to just go around again. Instead from my experience
people would rather being asshats that cut someone off or stop trying to reverse back to get out of the circle.

This saturday some dame was on the inner lane when she wanted to go west on hillsborough and she nearly hit me while i was on the outside lane. I honked but she didn't even notice. She then nearly side swiped someone else by almost turning left on kilgore and then coming back onto hillsborough street so she can make it to dan allen.

Yeah, it is that small moment of panic where a smart driver will just relax and take the extra time to go back around, and a moron/female driver will go berserk and risk an accident to make the turn RIGHT NOW!!!!!
