^Exactly. Weezer has always walked that fine line and that's what made them so great when they were at their best. It was tongue in cheek and they didn't take themselves too seriously while still writing some killer pop songs. Right now it doesn't work and it comes off as totally lame.

I agree about The Red Album --- in the 2nd song ("greatest man that ever lived") there's this rap rock shit at the beginning that is terrible, then this spoken word crap at the end that's even worse, but the middle contains all kind of good hooks and changes of pace.

I like "Pork & Beans", the 3rd track, and I like one of the songs near the end... I think it's #7 (one of the tracks that doesn't have Rivers on vocals). I like it better than Make Believe, but so far I'm not enjoying this too much. Maybe 3 or 4 songs out of 10 will continue to get a listen from me.

See I think I feel the opposite of most of you guys on this. To me "Peace" had worse lyrics than most of the songs on this album. I had 3 major issues with Make Believe (a lot of minor issues, but these were the big ones): lyrics, repetitiveness, and production.

Lyrics are still a problem, and IMO the biggest problem Rivers (ignoring the other guys for a moment here as writers) has at this point with his songwriting. However, I do actually think the lyrics here are much better than Make Believe, although there are still some cringe worthy ones. Or maybe they aren't better, but are just masked more by more interesting music around them.

As for the other two concerns, I think this album addressed them. These songs are just more interesting, with more little quirks and details that have been lacking for some time. That is probably why I still find myself enjoying this album whereas the last few wore out their welcome rather quickly. The backing vocals are the best since Pinkerton; I don't care for any of the other guys as lead singers, but I yearn for the return of more 3 part harmonies like the early albums, and there are some here that aren't bad.

Production is the biggest improvement. This has pretty much killed everything since Pinkerton for me. That's more of a personal issue; bad production can just destroy an album for me. Completely throwing out objective discussion, I just think most of these songs are fun and actually rock; I can turn up the volume and blast them. The drums finally have some kick to them (and I might even daresay that this is Pat's best effort outside of Pinkerton), and the bass has some power behind it. The production on Green and Make Believe, and to a slightly lesser extent Maladroit, was just such utter shit that it's unbelievable. Green and Make Believe might actually be decent albums if they weren't compressed into utter oblivion.

I've always been driven into a rage and wanted to rip off the necks and shit down the throats of people who say things like "U GUYZ WOULD HATE PINKERTON AND LOVE MAKE BELIEVE IF THEY WERE RELEASED IN THE OPPOSITE ORDER". But, I actually do kind of feel in a couple spots on this album that if a song or two were 1994 demos reactions would be completely different.

I'm not totally sure what I'm saying here. I guess I'm honestly a bit surprised at how much hate this album is getting; it's weird being in the other camp for once. Once I get past the opening few lines in "Troublemaker" that are terrible, I just really like that song. I think "The Greatest Man" is awesome, "Pork and Beans" has grown on me and seems permanently stuck in my head, and while I'm not sure what to make of the shitty verses of "Everybody Get Dangerous", I think the bridge and breakdown are killer. I like "Dreamin'" right down to the bizarre "running through the meadows" midsection that sounds like a weak imitation of something from a hippie era Beach Boys album. Fuck it, maybe this is just a guilty pleasure for me. "Thought I Knew" is a shitty song, but I'll be god damned if I don't enjoy listening to it every time. I think "Automatic" is fun although the tempo is too slow, and "The Angel and the One", despite being absurdly anti-climatic, is awesome.

I hope that I don't change my mind later and regret having made this post, but I think it's had enough time to settle in that my opinion is pretty firm.

Oh, and I'm also interested to hear the 4 deluxe tracks: http://www.amazon.com/Weezer/dp/B001A62PP6/ref=dm_ap_alb2?ie=UTF8&qid=1211695036&sr=101-3 Miss Sweeney definitely sounds odd.

I'm digging the raconteurs album more and more lately.

especially the last track Carolina Drama, it just seems fucking epic although i'm sure many see it as just silly. Can't wait to see them at Bonnaroo.

Quote :
"Cadenza boss Luciano mixes minimal, tribal and house on his new mix for Fabric. Fabric 41 is out next month.

Luciano is famously averse to CD mixes, but Fabric have managed to twist his arm into delivering the goods. “For me, the hardest thing to do is make a mix CD. Really,” says Swiss/Chilean minimal star. “It was a big decision for me to do a CD for Fabric. To me, mixing is about the live moments, it’s about the moment you live with the people: that’s why you choose one record, and this is how you push the music. So to make a mix CD and already have a playlist in my head, it’s something that disturbs me. Then I know I have to play this and that—I feel obliged to do something rather than feeling free to just create something."

“It was really difficult for me,” he adds. “I always try to think, ‘what music do I like?’ and I try to make something a bit more natural. Not too soft or too thin, and not screaming either, but to mix both together. I try to use also a lot of tools, some elements that I can put in and put out, so it’s more like a composition, but it’s still very tough to make a mix feel right. I took a very dance-approach and I tried to make a sort of crescendo, musicwise. It starts a little bit deeper with fewer elements and slowly it modifies and modulates into something more charged and more rhythmic.”

Fabric 41 is Luciano’s second commercial mix, and follows up Sci.Fi.Hi.Fi Vol. 2. Like that mix, it begins in minimal territory, slowly building to floor-oriented house climax before finishing on the gentle techno of Chymera’s ‘Arabesque’."

Tracklist

01 Rhadoo – Slagare – Cadenza Records
02 Brothers’ Vibe – El Baile [Acapella]– Som Underground
03 D’Julz – Yo Momo – Intacto Records
04 Los Updates Ft. Luciano – Getting Late [Luciano’s Getting Late Remix] – Cadenza Records
05 Reboot – Be Tougher – Cadenza Records
06 Alex Picone – Floppy – Cadenza Records
07 Sety – Mogane (Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts Remix) – Circus Company
08 Johnny D – Orbitalife – Oslo Records
09 Julien Jabre – Jungle Beatz – Defected
10 M83 – In Church – Gooom Disques
11 Inner City – Good Love [Luciano Remix] – KMS
12 Phuture – Rise From Your Grave [Tiefschwarz Remix] – Strictly Rhythm
13 Schneider, Galluzzi – Albertino – Cadenza Records
14 D’Julz – So You Know – Ovum
15 Kenny Larkin – You Are Original – Planet E
16 Chymera – Arabesque - Tishomingo

Tracklist looks pretty promising on this one.

"Jazzman records continues its quest to uncover the best and rarest Funk ever recorded, and after the success of last year’s ‘Florida Funk’, we’ve moved up the Atlantic coast to look at the vibrant and original scene in the two rural states of North and South Carolina – collectively known as the Carolinas.

Bordering the Bible belt, the Carolinas share the hidebound reputation of neighbouring Tenessee – and without any large urban centres, much of the musical output of the Carolinas has been limited to single towns, with bands and their records seldom venturing further than the state line.

Funk 45 label boss Jazzman Gerald and resident North Carolina collector Jason Perlmutter have selected 22 of the rarest and most coveted examples of heavy funk from the Atlantic Coast to show the world there is more to the Carolinas than tobacco plantations and venus fly traps!

From inspired percussive instrumentals to heartfelt slabs of soul; from rediscovered tapes in the garages of retired musicians to funk 45s so raw that they were blessed by James Brown himself – this is Carolina Funk! "

^it was originally released locally with the cover you posted (the guy who did the comp. was selling them at schoolkids like 6 months ago), but when Stones Throw officially released it they changed the cover to look like the others in the series (Florida Funk, Midwest Funk, Texas Funk - which are all great)

"DEERHOOF ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM, OFFEND MAGGIE

Deerhoof has just finished a new album, Offend Maggie, to be released on Deerhoof’s longtime home, Kill Rock Stars.

One song from Offend Maggie will soon be available from an interactive website as a downloadable written score. Fans (or foes, or perfect stangers) can then record the song and share their mp3s with others on the website. It is not yet known which song it will be. Everyone can hear Deerhoof's own solution to the song when the album is released October 7.

The October release will be followed immediately by a world tour of all-ages venues and low ticket prices.

In the meantime, Deerhoof will join their hip-hop buddies The Roots this weekend by performing at The Roots Picnic in Philadelphia along with Gnarls Barkley and others before heading off to tour Japan, then a free show in Brooklyn, an appearance at the Halifax Jazz Festival, and a night at the Hollywood Bowl. They continue to perform songs from Offend Maggie throughout these shows. Catch them if you can!

Also don't miss the new Will Ferrel movie Stepbrother which features Deerhoof's Greg Saunier playing with producer John Brion and Nels Cline of Wilco on the soundtrack.

Coldplay -- Viva La Vida

one of the tracks, "life in technicolor" is poor quality. I have another link to it as well, but it's at 128, while this is at 192.

If/when I find a better one, I'll up it. It should helps some of y'alls ratio's on other sites, however.

It's a really great album, too...all three Wilson brothers were great songwriters. "Forever," for example, is a fantastic song, and the original recording doesn't have any of the cheesiness of the John Stamos version.

Over-fucking-rated then.

It's like a cult of you people who get all your friends together and push Pet Sounds on them like it's the holy grail of the timelessness of awesome music. Need to get over it. That album isn't even that great. I mean, it's okay...but don't go touting off and diarrheaing at the mouth when anybody outside said cult probably doesn't give a fuuuuuuck.

I love Pet Sounds, Smile and some of Wild Honey. But the rest of their catalog is too cheery for everyday listening IMHO.

Now Pacific Ocean Blue is great stuff. It's pop that's both fun and gritty.
