And yet he never won a championship (conference or NCAA) at LSU. He didn't even win one in the NBA. Maravich didn't elevate the players around him and make them way better players than they were. DT did. Bill Walton did. Bill Russell did. They were all better than Maravich. Maravich was great no doubt, but best ever? And don't pull out his stats. He benefited from one being in the weak SEC, and two being the coaches son.

Pete was basically raised by his dad to be a basketball fundamentals machine. He was probably the best single player to play college basketball but that doesn't make a team which is why it never really translated to championships. While he was at LSU, they had absolutely no one to play with him so he had to take all the shots to stay in the game.

Rivals says that we are watching CB/S Walt Canty from Dorman HS in Roebuck, SC (that's close to Spartanburg). Rumor has it that at least one of our coaches was spotted there. I know we were once on and had offered 4* OL Brandon Thomas who is a Clemson commit, and he goes to Dorman. Perhaps the coaches saw Canty and liked what they saw. I know we wanted to see him in camp, but I don't know if he came or not. They play in Dorman Stadium, capacity 10,000, which puts some D-IAA stadiums to shame. They also have a 4,443 seat basketball arena. That's huge for a high school.

Canty is a 2* prospect on Rivals, but has yet to be evaluated by Scout. He had an early offer from Presbyterian, but I'm sure he's wanting a bigger offer. Lamart Barrett is back helping out the program. Injuries kept him from catching on with the Rams after he was done here at State. He wants to become a coach one day. John Dunlap used to talk about how Lamart was another coach among the WRs. Last fall he helped out in the recruiting office and now has a video graduate assistant position for the offense this spring. His goal is to become a positional coach.

Kind of bitter/sweet. I hate it for him that he didn't get to play at the next level. I really feel sorry for him. But great for him that he gets to coach which is something he has always wanted to do.

He said he learned a lot from Rams WR coach Henry Ellard though. Also he said that former State WRs coach Dwayne Dixon really made him realize he really wanted to be a coach. He said he helped him improve on and off the field. I wish we would have kept coach Dixon and coach Cignetti. Cignetti is doing quite well now at Alabama, but seemed like he really would have liked to stay on.

TheWolfpacker.com says that we are tracking Georgia linebacker Julian Burnett. We haven't offered yet though, but have been showing some heavy interest. He isn't that tall, but is very fast for a middle linebacker. He has some pretty decent offers. Rivals has yet to evaluate him, but Scout rates him as a 2* prospect and the #75 MLB nationally. ESPN ranks him as the #44 ILB. All indications say if Auburn were to offer, they would be the favorite.

Good prospect despite lack of ideal measurables and could be productive in a fast attacking defense that can cover him up a bit in the middle."

So everyone knows that Southern Durham's Anthony Creecy has an offer from State, but another Southern Durham player, defensive back A.J. Marshall, also has a verbal offer from the Pack. Both Marshall and Creecy are on ESPN's Top 150 Watch List. Crisp is on there as well. Crisp, at 6'7 302, will likely be the No. 1 player in the state, and Creecy will likely be Top 5 in the state.

So NCAA rules say that State can officially offer (i.e. written) members of the 2010 class on September 1. I'm guessing those that have already gotten verbal offers (Creecy, Marshall, Crisp, Moore) have gotten letters by now or will receive them soon.


Sylvester Crawford has offers from State, West "By God" Virginia, and Western Carolina. ECU and Illinois had said that they would offer. State and WVU are pretty much in a head-to-head battle for him. He is currently coached by former Carolina Panther Brentson Buckner. Buckner recently said this:

Cartersville’s Morgan Alexander collected his fourth scholarship offer just over a week ago. “I picked up an offer from N.C. State a week ago Friday,” said Alexander, who is considered the 107th-best running back in the nation by Scout.com. “I already had offers from Louisville, Arkansas and Indiana.” The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Alexander, who runs the 40 in 4.46 seconds, said Louisville and N.C. State are recruiting him the hardest. “They’re both calling a lot,” he said. “And N.C. State said they plan on sending some coaches to see me play.” Alexander is also being evaluated by a pair of programs whose school colors is predominately orange. “I’m being recruited by Clemson and Tennessee,” he said. Cartersville, which is ranked No. 10 in Class AAA, hosts the No. 3 program in Class AA, Westminster, on Friday.

Some more recruiting heat for you all.

DT Tyson Chandler has us as his overall leader right now over offers from Cincinnati, Maryland, South Florida, Temple and New Mexico State. UConn, Rutgers, and Syracuse are also recruiting him pretty hard. Probably what swayed him to making us his favorite is his three day unofficial visit to State at the end of July.

Chandler also mentioned how he liked South Florida and them being ranked No. 2 in the country at one point last year. It really does show you that winning cures all. If you are a winning program you have a much easier time recruiting. Right now the 6-6 defensive tackle measures in a 340, but he wants to get down to 320 sometime in his senior season. For comparison BC's starting 5th year senior defensive tackles, Ron Brace and B.J. Raji, check in at 6-3 324 and 6-1 323 respectively. NC State's starting defensive tackles to start the year, Antoine Holmes and Alan-Michael Cash, checked in at 6-2 281 and 6-1 286 respectively. Cash is now injured and out for the year though. O'Brien's BC teams were known for their stingy run defenses, and he will need to get his type of players in to get the Pack to become one of the toughest run defenses in the ACC and nationally.

Checking In With Chris Tanzy

The state of Georgia is loaded with talent each year. This year is no different. Many recruits fly under the radar but make a splash during their college carrers. Chris Tanzy is a name to remember.

Each fall brings a large array of challenges for high school athletes. Friday night lights aren't the only thing on the minds of prep stars. The beginning of the school year signals another year of academic preparation.

"I just got done with some homework I had to write out," stated Chris Tanzy. "I just finished the paper. It was difficult but I did well (laugh)."

How did the season start for the Marietta High star?

"We won Friday night 33-7. We beat Northview. I start at QB and play some DB too. Friday I mainly played QB but I had a few tackles on defense."

It is this type of athletic ability that has colleges calling Tanzy every chance they get.

"Louisville, Ole Miss, and Middle Tennessee have offered me. Marshall, Memphis, South Carolina , North Carolina and North Carolina State have all been by my school. Some of those schools are close to offering."

What coaches stand out to talented two way athlete?

"I really like Coach Nord from Louisville. I have a great relationship with him. We talk quite a bit on the phone. I also like Coach Rocker from Ole Miss. He's been by the school and I've talked with him on the phone too. Coach Mangus from Middle Tennessee State was at my school Friday before our game. He's a really nice guy. Coach McCollum from North Carolina State calls me some. I enjoy talking to him."

Are all of these schools recruiting the Georgia product to play one position?

"Every school recruiting me wants me to play safety."

Has Tanzy decided on where he will take official visits?

"I have not set up an official visits but right now I'm looking at visiting Louisville, Ole Miss, Middle Tennessee State, North Carolina State, and North Carolina.

Is Tanzy ready to name a leader?

"I think Louisville stands out a little right now but Ole Miss is right there with them. My first cousin, Brandon Bolden, goes to Ole Miss. He says it's quiet out there but there is always stuff to do. I talk to him a lot about it. They love football at Ole Miss. Brandon also tells me about the girls at Ole Miss (laugh). Louisville is the opposite of Ole Miss. There is tons of stuff to do there. I've been there once on a family vacation. You can see their field right off the interstate. I feel the most comfortable with Louisville's coaches."

Is a decision in the future for Tanzy?

We are up to High Interest for RB Morgan Alexander. We are battling with Louisville and Arkansas right now. It'd be nice to land him.

Creecy keeps humble as his star rises'

This story is about 2010 wide receiver prospect Anthony Creecy, from Durham (N.C.) Southern Durham. But don't be surprised if Creecy never reads it.

At 5 feet 11 and 193 pounds, Creecy already is one of the most highly recruited wide receiver prospects in the class of 2010. On Sept. 1 – the first day juniors were eligible to receive offers – Creecy received written offers from Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Stanford. But this story and those offers are not what are on his mind these days. Creecy is more focused on staying grounded and continuing to work on his game.

"I don't even read articles about myself because I don't want to get too big of a head," Creecy said. "My dad reads them and tells me the key points. My dad always taught me to be humble."

Being humble will be a challenge for Creecy. There won't be many wide receivers in the 2010 class who will be more highly recruited. But if his father, Anthony Creecy Sr., is as successful in instilling humility as he is in molding a wide receiver, his son's attitude won't suffer. Creecy is as polished as any wide receiver you will find as a high school junior, and his father can take a good bit of the credit for that.

"Ever since I was young, ever since I could run, he always had me outside the house, teaching me how to run routes," said the younger Creecy. "He played through college at (Division II) Elizabeth City (N.C.) State. He was a real good player, but ever since that he's been coaching. He's coached Pop Warner, middle school, high school, college. Right now he's coaching the Southern Durham JV."

Though the elder Creecy has kept a close eye on his son and has had the opportunity to coach him throughout much of his early years, there never was any favorable treatment.

"He's been my coach my whole life, but on the football field he wasn't my dad," Creecy said. "He was my coach. On the football field I never called him 'dad.' He didn't teach me like his son on the football field. That's why I've never been a selfish person. He's always instilled that in me."

This past offseason, Creecy proved he could compete with the best wide receivers in the country. At the Nike Training Camp on the North Carolina campus in May, Creecy arguably outperformed some major 2009 prospects such as Logan Heastie and Alshon Jeffrey. At the Dave Schuman Ultimate 100 combine in Atlanta in June, Creecy clearly was one of the top wide receivers there despite competing against the best regional prospects in the 2010 class.

"I can run routes, and when I break down, I don't slow down," he said. "When I break down, I can get back to the speed I was before I broke down. A lot of people don't see a receiver this big, but when they see me run and they see my hands, they realize I'm a good receiver."

Along with the four offers he picked up on the first day of September, Creecy has received offers from as far away as Oregon and as close as East Carolina.

"I've always been a (North) Carolina fan, but ever since this recruiting thing started, NC State has always been my top choice because of the love they give me," Creecy said. "But when I started going to games, ECU really has caught my attention. The way they've played and their fans are really looking good."

Creecy already has attended a couple of college games on unofficial visits and he hopes to continue to stay busy, hitting college campuses this fall.

"I've been to ECU, (North) Carolina, (NC) State, and I'm going to a couple of Duke games, Georgia Tech and Georgia," Creecy said.

In between his visits, Creecy will have a lot of opportunity for success on the field this season. His supporting cast at Southern Durham includes athletic junior quarterback Alan Lea, senior wide receiver Kendrick Wiggins and junior cornerback A.J. Marshall, all of whom are major-college prospects. After losing its first two games of the season, Southern Durham has won two in a row. The Spartans play Durham Hillside on Friday.

"At first, we started out kind of shaky," Creecy said. "I'm glad we lost those two games, though, because it made us realize how we made those mistakes and what we can change."

Regardless of how things play out, you can count on Creecy enjoying himself every time he steps on the field.

"I'm just blessed I can play," he said. "There's a lot of kids that wish they could play but can't because of disability, so I always have fun and don't take it for granted."

So TE Asa Watson was finally evaluated by Scout.com and he was bumped to a 3* prospect and the #49 TE nationally.

We have what 15 spots to fill? I kind of wonder if the coaches are considering taking two tight ends. We don't have a lot of depth at that position. I'm almost sure they want to take 2 RBs in this class as evidenced by them offering Travis Small and Morgan Alexander well after we had James Washington committed.

How in the world did we land this guy over the weekend. Talbert had his official visit this weekend. He saw us play a terrible game and get destroyed. On top of that it was raining bullets. Also most of the crowd packed up and left after the rain and the game got out of hand.

He's now my friend on myspace. I feel all giddy inside.

We are supposed to be playing Cincinnati in the upcoming years, so he'll get to play in front of a hometown crowd during his college career.

Cincinnati Winton Woods TE Anthony Talbert has given his word to N.C. State, committing to the Wolfpack after an official visit this weekend, Rivals.com reported.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound athlete also had scholarship offers from Cincinnati and several MAC schools.

"I feel like it was the right fit for me," Talbert told Rivals.com. "The coaches were all nice and they got all the best interest of the players, and the players were real cool. They seem like they really care about one another. I got a good vibe down there.

We have offered CB Keith Reaser. Reaser goes to Killian High in Miami. We have had a number of players come out of Killian (Miguel Scott, Stephen Tulloch, Bobby Washington although he later transferred to EKU, Andre Maddox, Pat Thomas), so it's definitely been a good pipeline for us in the past. Rivals says he has 4 offers, but I don't have premium over there. Scout has not updated his profile to indicate these offers. Reaser is rated a 2* prospect by both Rivals and Scout, and Scout ranks him as the #164 CB nationally.
