My tech said that the gateways don't work with routers.
I cant imagine thats correct. Anyone have a home network setup with uverse? 3/31/2010 1:07:48 PM |
Golovko All American 27023 Posts user info edit post |
I've done it two ways:
1) used a time capsule as my router for all my devices. The gateway had a DMZ setup to the time capsule
2) this is my current setup. The time capsule is hard wired into the gateway and acts as a bridge for wireless conectivity. The wireless on the gateway is disables.
Either way you can't disable the router in the gateway. But you can setup your own in addition to it. The downside is that your devices that are wired into the set top box are not on the same LAN as your other devices. 3/31/2010 1:19:43 PM |

dont' have uverse yet, but here's what I found on google: http://utalk.att.com/t5/High-Speed-Internet-Access/Linksys-WRG54t-router/m-p/108601#M8149
Quote : | "If you have highly "customized" network, and don't want to reconfigure everything, I suggest using your own router behind the RG.
This is what I did to use an "internal" router. I set my "internal" router to use DHCP for the WAN address, plugged it's WAN port in to the RG, let the RG assign a local address to the "internal" router and then set that address to the DMZ in the RG. When I go to the "internal" router it shows as having the same WAN, gateway, and DNS addresses that the RG uses.
I set the "internal" router to assign addresses to "my" side of the network in a different IP range than what the RG uses (192.168.2.* instead of 192.168.1.*) but using the same subnet mask (255.255.255.0). My internet works fine with no interuptions and local network tasks (back ups, streaming, etc.) work as expected. I can also still access the RG from "my" side of the network when I need to without having to change any network settings or swap any cables. Leave DHCP running on the RG. You do not need to disable the firewall in the RG as the DMZ will open a pinhole through it to the address you pick (your internal router). If you have existing wireless on your router that your satisfied with and want to keep, just make sure to turn off the wireless in the RG.
As for the STBs they should be run straight out of the RG with CAT5 or RG6 Coax.
If you currently have your router behind a basic DSL or Cable modem, Your setup will be pretty much the same. The RG will replace your modem, then go into your existing router and change it's internet connection type to Dynamic or DHCP. Then change it's internal network IP adress and DHCP Pool and you should be good to go." |

^truthfully, if you're in a house with 3-4 roommates, everyone with their own TV in the bedroom, plus a TV in the living room - AT&T isn't for you. cuz you can only watch 2 HD channels and 2 regular channels at once. and if you wanna DVR something, you're gonna take away one of the channels that are able to be watched. and if all 4 roommates are home and are all watching TV at once, then only 2 of them can watch HD, and nothing will be able to be recorded while everyone is watching TV.
someone in this thread was complaining that their roommates were always cancelling the shows that were recording so they could watch a different channel. maybe Str8BacardiL or someone?] 4/7/2010 9:29:09 PM |

WHEN IS THE UPDATE COMING AT&T???? GIMME DAT 4-HD STREAM SHIT.
question about this "update"... I know it's going to be 4 HD streams... but that is all the streams, right? not 4 HD + 2 SD, just 4 HD??

yeah i think the only "update" is that you can watch up to 4 HD channels at a time, not that you get 6 streams. 4/8/2010 9:31:48 AM |

The chat rep was useless, I'm just trying to get an idea how this interfaces with my existing coax cabling, if at all.
It goes Cable from street -> gateway -> tv boxes and computers? Can we even use my existing cabling to get from the gateway to the tv boxes or do they have to run new lines? 4/8/2010 11:52:17 AM |

had the techs come out to do an install yesterday after placing an order online. first guy comes out and does a reading from the street and says we are about 3300' from the VRAD and that there is nothing he can do and that he would have to call the cable techs to check it out. So they come out and do some tests near the house and say we are almost 4000' in actuality and there is nothing they can do. neighbor on the right has u-verse installed and apparently neighbor on the left would be good to go.
after talking with 5 different at&t techs that came out, we were informed that we are in the absolute middle between 2 different VRADs, each terminating at the houses next door to ours. How awesome is that?
So we call the at&t sales group back to cancel the order (obviously) and were told that they have increased the power on the line and we should be OK now and they want to send someone else out. I don't see how 5 techs can tell me one thing on one day only to hear something completely different the next day. starting to be more trouble than it is worth at this point. 4/14/2010 3:29:46 PM |

They can double-pair your connection and probably make it work that far out. The problem is that it is both experimental and more expensive, so they need tons of permission to do that. That may be what they mean by "increased the power". If I were you, I would let the next guy come out just for academic purposes, but U-Verse is probably not for you. 4/14/2010 4:33:43 PM |

Yeah, they couldn't even make that happen. The tech measured the distance for the one neighbor that has u-verse installed and said he was at 3600'. He then told me there is no way that guy is getting a good signal and wondered if he was having a lot of issues.
Frankly the whole thing has been a PITA. She just finally gave up and used the u-verse thing to wrangle a better deal out of TWC. maybe TWC will eventually get off their asses and upgrade the internet service around here. (not holding my breath)4/15/2010 12:01:11 AM |

^All of the prices are available online. They don't negotiate so you can see what you are going to pay. I'm paying around $126 for u200 + extra box + 12 mbps + hd. I think that's everything. Quality of service is about 100x better than TW which makes it worth a little extra money imo. 5/24/2010 7:35:08 PM |

yeah i pay the exact same with uVerse as I did with TWC, but I get far superior service and features for that same money...and my bill doesn't randomly go up by 20%-30%. It's been a win-win for me. 5/24/2010 7:59:01 PM |
