Congrats! Maybe I missed it, but where will you be working? What will you be doing?

I'd recommend not being sad and embracing it. Obviously make sure your money is in order and all that, but after I would recommend doing some of the things you've been putting off, reading some books, visiting friends, etc.

I've been employed (as a bartender/bar manager) for the past couple months....but now I'm finally employed again using my degree...and it couldn't be a more perfect situation.

I'm joining up with a very well established solo practitioner (he's been practicing law for 30 years). And he's planning on retiring in about 2 or 3 years and handing anything he has left over to me. No overhead...he's got an office for me and will be putting me under his liability insurance. And he's also a part-time economics professor at the College of Charleston...which means he's all about teaching me how to practice law by myself...which is what I ultimately want to do.

Best thing is that I'm starting off working about 20-25 hours a week. Which means I get to keep my bar managing job that I'm making a very comfortable living with and at the same time get to ease my way into my legal career. Once I start working more at the law firm, then I'll give up the bar managing position and just start taking less shifts behind the bar.

Got the job through word of mouth. Charleston is ridiculously saturated with attorneys and I have plenty of law school classmates who are still job-less. But I was pretty much the perfect peg to fill this hole (he didn't need someone full time and I was financially stable with my current job that I can keep). He ran into a friend of mine at the courthouse and she gave him my name. Was starting to get the feeling that I was going to be taking a long break and remain working in the food and beverage industry...but now I'm really excited to be using my degree again.

so I just got allocated on another project for a year. that's great except I'm not too keen on moving to mclean, va. it's another expensive as balls area and I'm probably going to lose $4k on my lease here. add to that I'm going to be doing testing for another year (anyone have any serious advice on how long this can go on without me getting pigeonholed?)

My only other option, though, is hope my fiancee or I find a megabucks job within 3 months... ugh

What type of testing? And what would you rather do instead?

I think in healthy markets you could transition to something else (say, design) with a pay cut, though probably better than a recent grad, and do something new because the labor market tends to be tight and companies have trouble getting access to solid candidates.

It's completely different in a weak economy, and this could go on for a few years.

If you are ultimately wanting to do something different, you're going to have to do things outside of work to bring and keep your skillset up in your target area.

the girl is supposed to find out monday whether she got a job. was 1 of over 200 applicants and made it down to the final 3! But we can't celebrate until she actually gets a job because runner up kinda sucks at this point for us haha.

My last day right now is September 4th + me spending a few weeks of vacation = paychecks stop at the end of September unless we land another project that I can get on.

probably joining the list. well it will take 5ish months before i stop getting paid.

how strict are companies about cutting severance pay when you get a new job. can they actively probe through some channel (tax records?)? i can get a new job I just dont want to miss out on free money.

ill work at blockbuster or home depot just to pass time hahahahah.

Well, city-data.com shows some statistics that basically make it look like a white, semi-wealthy suburb with low crime and acceptable rent prices.

^^ Do you know they are going to pay it on a recurring basis or one lump sum? They paid it as a lump sum at our last job.

And, you guys were getting on the unemployed, consider this.

Home Depot, $8hr*40hrs = $320 wk

UI = $430 wk + $240wk cap on earnings.

So, at the very least, file for UI and only get a job making no more than $240 wk.

3rd post on the thread... and I'm finally going permanent! I jumped around a few temp jobs, then landed at the one I'm at now in Jan. They wanted to hire me in April, but there was a freeze. 6 months later... we finally pushed through all of the management bullshit! It's been a crazy year, but the ride ended in a much better place, so I'll take it.

Don't knock the staffing/temp agencies. Yeah.. they make a ton off of you but you (usually) make more than min. wage and some companies ONLY hire through the agencies.

The last company I was at was only allowed to hire through an agency but for $28/hour I wasn't going to complain.

I wonder how many people who are unemployed are just unwilling to accept jobs that they consider to be beneath them.

I have a feeling I may join the ranks of the unemployed sometime in October, which is when our next round of layoffs is planned. The department that funds my position is being hit severely. Looks like I could be moving back to Raleigh ... oh my.

It's with the government at a location near Morehead City. Pay and benefits are actually quite a bit better than I thought they could be when I went to interview, actually really similar to what I was making when I was laid off and I was ready to settle for quite a bit less. I'm actually a bit bummed about having to move away as I've been here since 1998 and really love the house/location I'm at now. I'll be moving away from friends and farther away from family (same for my wife). The good news is home prices are a bit more reasonable there than in Cary, so we'll get to upgrade in size for free, and being close to the beach is certainly cool. And I'll be making enough that my wife won't have to work so she can work on her side business and I get out of the majority of the cooking/cleaning chores.

At the end of the month it'll mark 1 year that I have been unemployed . I've actually had two job offers recently, but they both required a credit check and my credit isn't the greatest (and being unemployed for so long hasn't helped). A couple of months back we pretty much ran out of money and me, my wife and our 3 kids had to move into my parents' basement. Now my dad is getting laid off in a couple of weeks so they're/we're gonna have trouble paying for the house and supporting everyone in it.

I'm sure something will come through.

^That sucks man. Good luck in the future.

Some questions that you don't have to answer but...have you tried (or are you trying) to get some minimum wage paying jobs or tried to wait tables? How old are your kids and how are they dealing with it?
