I think this series came down to the Pens' ability to crash the net. The Cane's just couldn't get one in the net; they got plenty of SOG and the defense was good enough to keep things close if they were scoring.

just got back from the game...

it was cool because i traded my ticket to a pens fan for the last 8 mins to sit in section 106 row B. damn those seats are awesome.

i didn't like the fact that joie and i had to deal with people tugging on our jerseys the entire game asking us to sit down because they couldn't see. really? this is the playoffs! (i was disappointed in my fellow canes fans) not to mention the bitch had ear plugs in!

This hurts right now, but once the dust settles I think I will remember two things from this year:

1) An amazing two rounds. One of the greatest months of my life. Since moving here just 12 years ago, this team has really had 3 moments. 2002, 2006, and now 2009.

2) An undying hatred for Pens fans. After my experience with them in Pittsburgh and my experiences here in Raleigh, there is no way I will ever cheer for them in a series over ANY team, and yes that probably includes the Buffalo Sabres. I am cheering for Chicago to pull out a miracle, and if they cannot, I hope Marian Hossa scores in overtime AT Mellon Arena to deliver another Stanley Cup to the Wings.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I am bracing for a little off-season drama. It is times like these that leave us with some head-scratchers.

Things that I see that are possible but would upset me:

JR announcing that Ron Francis will be the head coach effective next season
Us parting ways with LaRose and another FA like Jokinen or Babchuk in order to pay Erik Cole 3mil+/yr
Trading away either Bowman, Sutter, Boychuk, McBain
Stupid 1-way multiyear deals for scrubs

Mainly I am very interested in the Cole situation. The way the cap is going and the economy in general, he is going to have to take a cut even if he tests the market. If he is going to stay with us, barring the point above... he is going to have to take a massive pay cut. Will he be willing to cut his salary nearly in half?

Carolina Hurricanes Draft Picks for 2009

1 - 27

2 - 21 (51 Overall) As part of the Williams for O'Sullivan for Cole trade, we dealt our 2nd and acquired Calgary's. It looked like we were moving down at the time, but actually worked out as a gain.

3 - 27 (88 Overall)

Round 4 - no picks. We sent our 4th to Tampa for Jussi Jokinen and for them taking our garbage. Strangely, they traded this 4th to Toronto, who violated CBA terms and subsequently had this pick forfeited by the league.

5 - 10 (131 Overall) Part of the Cole trade. We got this pick from Edmonton. Our original 5th was lost in the Hordichuk trade, but we get Nashville's 5th next year, looks to be a gain at this point.

6 - 27 (178 Overall)

7 - 27 (208 Overall)


So 1 pick in each round except the 4th. We have all of our Draft Picks in 2010 plus Nashville's 5th acquired as a result of Darcy Hordichuk not signing here.

Every team has their 1st round pick except the Sharks, who traded theirs to Tampa, who traded it to Ottawa, who traded it to the Islanders. So the Isles have 2 1sts.
