That slide is crazy as hell

...I just started playing this last night with GrumpyGOP...this shit is gaming cocaine. I bought it today, but it looks like my computer doesn't quite have the specs to run it (I have a shitty macbook).

Any ideas on a cheap rig that would handle it well in either browser or download mode without all the specs turned down to minimum?

My 1.8ghz shitty dual core work laptop runs it. Have you tried turning fog render distance down? Hit F? Anything that has a higher CPU speed should run it better. Very CPU dependent. Will turn your laptop into a space heater.

^ I bumped down the draw distance to close, and turned the graphics from 'fancy' to 'fast,' which seemed to work well initially as I was doing my first scavenging, but as soon as I started to build a shelter, it started getting really choppy and eventually unplayable.

Well I don't know how to connect my railroad to the iron road, because apparently it would have to run straight through the middle of someones sand castle on ice. Also ran out of iron still needing ~32 tracks.

If anyone wants to help finish the linkup from my railroad to the main one, it would be much appreciated. Built it to the same 3x3 spec, although I think it sits one block lower.

so the powered mine cart.... how the hell does that work?

I can get mine to push a couple carts up a hill, but as soon as I get in one of the empty carts it's pushing, the engine says "eff this" and quits.

Unknown host means you probably have copied one of the characters after the IP adress to your clipboard.

hit backspace after pasting it and see if it "does nothing". That gets rid of them.

I play this on an early model netbook (atom n280 1.6 Ghz with intel gma 945) @15-20 fps. Minecraft can be played with a little coersion on almost anything. Just dont expect it to be 60fps 30fps or anything.

Really lets you see the game's biggest flaw. Notch's mistake is rendering any block that has one side visible, instead of what is visible to the user. Occlusion culling is not trivial, but you can fake it and eliminate half the rendered map easily.

The easy way to mine diamond...turn everything else off.

You do realize the game is in ALPHA, and its dipshits like SMC that keep developers from releasing pre-final games for others to play/try. Again, it's ALPHA. That buglist is pretty damn tiny for an ALPHA level SMP online game.

The game is incredibly playable for it's current state, and a hella lot of fun. I could give a damn about better graphics or z occlusion.

Real companies don't charge money for alpha software...or beta software for that matter. Getting the game engine working properly seems like a big deal to me...more-so than pumpkins or fish or creating "hell" anyway. The number one complaint against minecraft, even among users in this thread, is how laggy it is. Here's hoping he hires some real programmers before someone else takes his idea and does it properly.

Real companies do this every day. Every commercial game released today is essentially in beta when it goes retail.

Having a polished engine and no logic doesn't make a game playable or fun. And considering hebhas a working, usable engine in java right now, rewriting it or just using any number of off the shelf engines is trivial, and not where I would be focusing my time or energy as a "real" developer

You're right, most companies don't. But a lot of single-developer games do it to help support the one guy with no financial support while he makes the game. It's not new and it's not odd.
