a small wagon to fit the following: - 200hpish (turbo/not, whatever) - rwd/awd - manual trans - decent fuel economy
...does that mean Volvo/subie? There was a local guy who had a 'boxy' model Volvo with LS1 and T56 swapped in it.... should have bought that fucker.

That’s a pretty nice Legacy, I thought they had 6 speeds in them for some reason...
Also, still pretty expensive. Too bad there really aren’t any recent, reliable, manual RWD wagons around that aren’t totally gutless and don’t cost an arm and a leg... 1/22/2015 11:46:28 PM |

I was looking into oldschool hatches and wagons a while back, but gave up on it. Like 1979 Corolla Wagon (TE36). FR Layout, 5 speed manual.. 1940 curb weight. yes, yes, and yes. I can't make up my mind what I want next...

Its not a GTI, or anything like it, other than the appeal that I can see it may have to a niche of people. I suppose the ST is a more accurate example of the old GTI reference I'm trying to make.
You want something professional, but fun, you know nothing about cars or car manufacturers. You're young and successful. So what do you get? A GTI. I guess maybe the RS will be seen moreso in the hands of true gearheads while young professionals.
I don't know how to explain it. Quinn knows what I'm talking about though. Of course not all GTI owners are clueless to the automotive world, it just seems like that's the "safe car" to get if you want something more than an econobox but helps maintain the youthful professional that you are. 2/4/2015 12:25:47 AM |

So apparently the GT4's power rating is conservative. Porsche's literature states that the engine makes 385 hp at 10,000 ft.
So yeah, that's probably over 400 hp but they won't state that outright so 911 owners won't get butthurt...my guess at least. 2/5/2015 3:09:01 PM |
theDuke866 All American 52839 Posts user info edit post |
That doesn't sound right either. 385 hp on a standard day at 10,000' would be 500+ hp at sea level.
Well, I guess that could be accurate if the 911 GT3 is itself substantially underrated (not unlikely from Porsche) and the GT4 is outfitted with the GT3's engine in full-tune state.

Just did the math for my buddy's Impreza that we used in CO. 5 guys + gear and at 10,000 feet that car was only making around 110 hp, lol. That damn CVT transmission....motorboating at 5,000 rpm constantly, so annoying. 2/6/2015 8:55:12 AM |

A turbocharged car isn't affected at all in terms of power output, IF the turbo is big enough to generate maximum boost pressure even with the lower air density. The only effect is that it would take longer to spool. Well, there might be some small power loss due to the turbo operating in a less efficient part of its compressor map.
If the turbocharger is too small to achieve maximum boost, then yes, you would have power losses, but not as much as a naturally aspirated engine (because you're making some of it back in that case).
Some piston-engined airplanes are turbo-normalized. They are turbocharged, but not for the purpose of making extra power...the turbo basically keeps engine output constant as altitude increases.
At any rate, you lose half your atmospheric pressure by about 18,000'. At 10,000', it would be more like 35%, I think...so yeah, that 385 hp at 10k' doesn't seem possible even if it's a full-up GT3 engine (because would represent what, 550-575 hp?). Where did you see that 385 hp number, Patrick?2/6/2015 3:32:01 PM |

^^you're not mistaken. This is a general thread, not about any particular car.
^^^so? The GT4 is about driving enjoyment as much as anything else. Since Porsche only offers the GT3 exclusively with the PDK, it's not surprising that they would do the opposite with this car. Who cares which is "faster" around a track, last time I checked this is a street car.

Kind of...but the other way around. There are pumping losses on the exhaust stroke due to exhaust restriction...but I suspect that they are largely mitigated by gains on the intake stroke, even off-boost. At any rate, a well-designed turbo system can yield a net gain in efficiency.2/6/2015 7:50:56 PM |

every fucking car they make is a street (legal) car. the GT line is track oriented, so making choices that deter from track performance and experience is just more of an indictment that the car is a marketing model more so than a legitimate new track platform.
also, no one was comparing a gti to anything. i think it sucks all on its own.2/7/2015 12:59:30 PM |

I think you guys are taking the 380@10k feet comment too literally. He was just saying it’d have... a healthy 380hp+.
A lot of Porsches (turbos and the GT series) have been known to be very conservative in ratings.
One note about the transmission, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the next GT3 (or RS) offered w/a traditional manual. The manual is based off of the PDK anyway. 2/7/2015 11:58:43 PM |

Quote : | "Lotus has revealed its fastest and most powerful production model ever.
The new Lotus Evora 400 is powered by a supercharged 3.5-liter V6 engine churning 400 hp and 302 lb-ft of torque, which is a big improvement over the previous model’s 345 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. According to the British automaker, the additional performance comes courtesy of a new supercharger as well as the addition of a new water-to-air intercooler and engine management system. With those figures, Lotus claims the Evora 400 has a top speed of 186 mph and is able to do the 0-60 MPH sprint in just 4.1 seconds. More importantly, other enhancements allow the Evora 400 to lap the Lotus test track six seconds quicker than the outgoing model.
While the overall shape of the Lotus Evora 400 is reminiscent of the current model, the company says that over two-thirds of the Lotus Evora 400 is new, allowing it to be almost 49 lbs lighter.
Braking performance has also been enhanced with more powerful, two-piece, cross-drilled and ventilated brake discs while forged lightweight aluminum wheels (19 inches in the front and 20 inches in the rear) will be standard, paired to Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.
As for the exterior, the Lotus Evora 400 has a much more aggressive design while the length of the sports car has been increased by 1.4 inches to a total of 173 inches. The new Lotus Evora 400 will enter production for European markets this summer with deliveries beginning in August. It will also be heading to the U.S. as a 2016 model year this fall. " |

most people clown around the street in these cars. i'd prefer a 3 pedal sequential, but that's not happening, so i'd much prefer the pdk. cleaner, faster shifts. I don't exactly get a thrill from fumbling for a shifter and a wicket. i much prefer nailing a deeper marker and still making the apex, playing with roll on point, playing with suspension geometry by modulating my trailbraking, or a million other more involving things to improve laptimes than fucking with that relic motion. next you'll tell me you want row em yourself without synchros.
my only beef with the pdk is that i can't feather the clutch for turn entry or exit for increased traction or reduced chassis disturbance, but i'm told that's mostly a bike thing and cars aren't as easily upset. i'm also not accelerating or decelerating as quickly in a car either.2/19/2015 10:34:35 AM |

My guess is 1) they didn't have the engineering resources to develop this car with 2 transmission options or 2) they intentionally left PDK off the options list to prevent it from stepping on the 911's toes (more than it already is).
My money's on #2. Anyone that's hell bent on a PDK Cayman can get the GTS and just deal with the hp deficit i guess. 2/19/2015 10:50:48 AM |
