Not only that, we haven't even had a .500 record once you get to October in any season since that year

Hate to say I was right to Kurtis and all the other haters but... wait no I don't.

Panthers are that good this year.

Yeah, I think it was one of those watershed moments that can bring everyone together -- the fans, the players, the coaches, everybody. Cam was obviously fired up when the Long stuff was going on. He walked down towards the end zone and pumped up the fans ... place was electric after that.

Don't get too excited about wins over awful teams. It's still a long climb to make the playoffs, Carolina is currently 8th in the NFC and have already had their bye week.

Panthers are .500 after 6 games.

3 wins: Teams combined record of = 5-15(including a win and loss for tonight with NYG/Minny)
3 losses: Teams combined record = 12-9

This isn't magic folks, we're beating bad teams in a convincing fashion and we lost to one good team and 2 up-and-down teams.

Next week we play a bad TB team with a rookie QB and Doug Martin banged up.
The next week we play the Falcons who are a MASH unit at this point with all their injuries on both sides of the ball.

We've only played 1 team with an offense ranked in the top 16 in the NFL(Seattle). The next test will be Atlanta which is currently top 10. So far and really going forward(outside of NO and ATL), we're really going to have a soft schedule for our defense. We just beat the 30th ranked offense in the Rams, but lost to the 29th ranked offense in the Cardinals. Next up 31st ranked TB.

It's more important to look at how we've played in each game. Even in our 2 losses, we played pretty well, especially defensively. In the loss to Arizona, our worst game by far, we still outgained them by over 100 yards. This is not a bad football team, or even an average football team. When we limit the mistakes, we can go toe to toe with anyone.

As for making the playoffs, we still control our own destiny. The downside is we already lost two games we should have won, and the remaining out of division games are against tough opponents. Definitely not an ideal position, but with Chicago, Detroit, and Philadelphia all losing this week, that final wild card spot is totally up for grabs.

Any objective fan would conclude that the Panthers are clearly a top ten team this year.

We're blowing teams out and losing close games. Our defense is better than all but the incredible KC and Seattle defenses. Other teams are losing guys left and right to injury and we're healthy.

It's just obvious that we're a top team to anyone that isn't a Panther hater.

Yeah, that's something that probably 25 of the 32 NFL teams can say.

Chicago and Detroit are definitely the main competition for the second WC (SF and Seattle are both making the playoffs). There's virtually no chance to win the South, New Orleans would have to collapse in a major way. GB, Chicago, and Detroit have all looked better than Carolina, IMO. There's an outside chance that Atlanta or Washington could be in position to jockey for it too, but it seems much more likely to me that the WCs will come out of the North and West.

Are all better than the Panthers. You can start arguing about where Carolina slots in with the likes of SD, Tennesse, Baltimore, Detroit, and Cleveland. Top 15 maybe. I don't think you'll find many people who would rank Carolina ahead of the 11 I put up there.

It really doesn't matter, the NFL doesn't operate on rankings, it's all a question of how you do against your schedule and how well the other teams in your division perform.

Wow, a month hadn't heard that yet, that would be huge. So flip flop where I have Detroit and Chicago.

And, again, I don't hate Carolina, I actually kind of like them, but it was a bad start and Rivera is a horrible coach. He's worth at least 2-3 losses by himself. Playoffs are a big ask.

Yeah, that's not true. Most teams can win if they play perfect football, but that's not what I said. We have a better defense than all but a handful of teams and our QB is playing at an elite level these past two games. There aren't 10 teams that can say that, let alone 25.

the way i look at it, the Packers, Saints and Seahawks are the only teams in the NFC that are definitely better than us...I think Dallas will choke like they usually do in December, but they'll probably still win their weak division...I think San Fran and Carolina are very similar and comparable...but I'm not scared of Dallas or Detroit or Chicago...and we always tend to play the Saints competitively, unless Clausen is our QB

Like I said when I brought up the whole odds of making the playoffs thing, it has a lot to do with who you play and how your competitors do than it does the actual quality of your team. The Panthers are pretty good, top half of the NFL, but making the playoffs will be tough. They've lost 2 very winnable games already which is tough to overcome and have yet to play a divisional game.

The next 4 games will probably make or break the season. 2-2 or better and they'll have a shot at the playoffs, anything worse and you can go ahead and forget about the playoffs.

Bears just lost Cutler and Briggs for at least a few weeks. That's one less team to worry about in the wild card hunt.

Kurtis is desperately hoping the Panthers aren't as good as we know they are so he can save face is what I've gathered from this page.

The goal should be 10-6 as it currently sits. @SF and @NO are the two really big tests going forward. We need to steal one of those.

[Edited on October 21, 2013 at 2:39 PM. Reason : Next 4 are at winless Tampa, shitty ATL at home, @49ers, and NE on MNF. 2-2 is the worst we do there]

Peter King has us at #15 FWIW

but if y'all want to talk about the aforementioned playoffs, let's see if we can get to 5-3 and 2-0 in the South first. I agree there's really only one WC up for grabs, but with Cutler hurt, Philly pretty bad (along with the rest of the East), and Detroit pretty wishy washy, it's within the realm of possibility. but none of this boast boast boast, brag brag brag shit. we're still 3-3 and have sucked the big D since 2008. baby steps, people.

It's not really boasting so much as recalibrating expectations based on early season developments. In the past, the Panthers were a bad to average team in a strong division with a tough schedule. This year, we're a good team in down division in an extremely down conference. The NFC is downright putrid this year. Prior to the season, I would have been happy with a winning record, even if we missed the playoffs. Now, it's playoffs or the unemployment line for Rivera.

DVOA ratings have us at #6 currently

Quote :
"Kansas City's ranking is one of the few places where the current DVOA ratings deviate significantly from win-loss records. Another team that stands out is Carolina, which has climbed to sixth overall at 3-3. However, with the exception of the Panthers, every team with a winning record is better than every team at .500 or worse except for two teams right in the middle of the ratings: Atlanta 15th at 2-4 and the Jets 16th at 4-3. I remember back in 2008 a thursday night game against TB in the middle of our 12-4 season. We absolutely stomped them, and I think we were 1 yard short of exactly 300 rushing yards that game. Someone look that up. That was also the game that Jonathan Stewart absolutely abused Ronde Barber on an outside run, stiff-armed him straight into the ground, it was glorious.
