Mark Armstrong @ArmstrongWTVD
Redacted 'Statement of Fact' forms, reinstatement requests sent to NCAA and bills from bond firm could be released today.

Mark Armstrong @ArmstrongWTVD
The 'Statement of fact' forms are basically UNC's description to the NCAA of the scenarios they believe constituted violations.

Mark Armstrong @ArmstrongWTVD
Whether athlete cell phone/bank records etc can be released as well as video recordings of any interviews with athletes, coaches...(More)

This document is basically unreadable because its been redacted. I see no reason they should be allowed to remove all this information. The intent of FERPA is to protect your grades and you financial aid info not a shield from scrutiny of academic fraud.

Good stuff starts showing up around 2/3 of the way down in the Statements of "Facts". Lists all the sketch stuff of the students. I'll start posting some of the things I see until I get bored.

Quote :
"
Student-Athlete claims he did not understand how to write the paper so he turned to
Student-Athlete for guidance. Student-Athlete states he put his name on the original
paper because would not assist him if saw Student-Athlete ’s name on the
paper. Student-Athlete states that he knew if he turned the paper in word for word that
he would have an Honor Court issue. Student-Athlete also claims that he did use some
of the original paper’s ideas to add on to his own paper, “used ideas but wrote my
own paper”.
a. Student-Athlete states that the reason he changed the name on the top of the
paper to his own is because is the type of person who does not want him
or any of the guys to get in trouble with Honor Court.

The professor for this course has subsequently provided the following information: The
students were given sample questions to help guide their analyses. The professor made a
point of telling me that students were encouraged to seek feedback and help from others
on these assignments, and indeed that it was acceptable to use text from another student’s
work as long as that text was properly attributed by footnote, etc.

"Student-Athlete forwards an email at 10:31 AM to from someone who he does
not recall knowing. Student-Athlete claims not to remember sending this
email since he had another tutor for this course.
2. Student-Athlete emails 3 minutes later with more information for this course
about a group presentation.
3. Student-Athlete “honest to God” doesn’t recall sending anything to for this
course. Student-Athlete had another tutor who made him go to the library to work on
his assignments for this course. Student-Athlete does not recall name but said
tutored and that used to work in .
4. Student-Athlete thinks that ’s email must have popped up when he typed in the
email address but also states multiple times that he did not even know at this
point."

"1. Student-Athlete sent two papers, entitled “ paper 1.doc for ”
and “ analysis.doc .doc”.
2. The papers were dated from the fall semester (8/23/ and 12/2/ ), but
Student-Athlete believed they were just misdated, and that he was seeking
proofreading assistance from . In fact, however, his transcript indicates that he
took in the fall semester, contradicting his account of why he was
sending the paper to . He stated that never did the work for him; rather,
he would send them to for feedback and they would talk about the changes that
needed to be made.
3. Once transcripts were reviewed and the term in which Student-Athlete had taken the
course was clarified, Student-Athlete indicated that he was not sure why he had sent
these papers to . He did not know if was helping someone in the class
and had asked for these papers for that purpose."

i like how they redacted the attorney's invoices, which probably just said stuff like:

"2.0 hours - redacting names and dollar amounts from documents"

keep up the good work Lionheart

it'll be fun to see what the hundreds of psychopaths on packpride dig up when they spend the next 24 hours combing through the whole document word for word

has anyone posted, or found any articles about, how the punishments are going to affect the UNC football program long term? I personally think they were to fuckin easy on them, in light of the entire scandal. I am just curious if anyone wants to discuss the ripple effect that these santions will have on the long term UNC football program.

zero.

W's and L's come from recruiting and coaching.

I'd argue they got a coaching upgrade in fedora (i guess the results remain to be seen), and recruiting hasn't seemed to miss a beat. players don't care about academic integrity or the integrity of the university, they just want playing time, publicity, and a shot at the NFL.

none of what's going on will affect that. The one year bowl ban is a slap on the wrist.

look at how cooperative they were! i mean, they finally released public-record documents, two years later. nevermind that those documents were so redacted and edited that they are "undecipherable." Oh, and they only released them under threat of a lawsuit.

that's a shame. How many peace, war, and defense degrees would that half mil give to low income hipsters that can't afford the degree on their own?

Even with that degree you still would be a low income hipster... But that's not important

So, the lesson the NCAA wants everyone to learn in this is that if you make blatantly fraudulent classes for athletes, then make sure a few non-athletes get into the courses, too. Then there's no "preferential treatment!"

Quote :
"In court documents filed Tuesday, Davis' lawyer, Jon Sasser, said that records of the former coach's calls on his private cell phone are not public because Davis was not a public official in the eyes of the public records law, and that the phone records were not created in the course of public business."

Butch still doesn't want his 216 phone records released, but certainly not because he has anything to hide

Quote :
""Hundreds of bright, imaginative Duke students huddling in their tents in Krzyzewskiville would suddenly have the legal ability to bring the athletic departments at UNC and NCSU to a standstill," Sasser wrote. "Three students could ask for all of (N.C. State University football coach) Tom O'Brien's playbooks, game films and practice videos.""

"Davis finally was fired last summer, shortly before the season and months later than he should have been. Baddour was forced out at around the same time, making way for Cunningham. The school applied some sanctions on itself, but the NCAA laughed, applying more meaningful penalties."

and History Professor Jay Smith is my new favorite Tar Heel.

Why you may ask? Here are a couple reasons:

Quote :
""To me the worst damage has come, and continues to come, from the university's defensive and less-than-forthcoming reaction to the entire story," Smith wrote in his email. "The university very much looks like it's trying to hide something. An objective outsider could reach no other conclusion. That does not reflect well on any of us. In fact, it's embarrassing.""

Quote :
""I think it's high time for all of us to know the full extent of the fraudulent behavior," Smith wrote. "Were members of the 2009 and 2005 national championship teams also beneficiaries of the AFAM/AFRI scam? I for one see no reason to assume that they were not. If the university wants to prove they were not, the whole world is listening.""

the fact that that asshole is using FERPA is all you need to know about what's in those phone records

Associate Chairman of the History Dept., Professor Jay Smith (this is how he must be addressed IMO from now on) is an "outsider" midwesterner. Gradudated from Northern Illinois and PhD work at Michigan. He's not some back-slappin good ol'boy asshole from the UNC network of asshole/asshats, that's why he's pissed. Good for him. After Marvin Austin, he's a strong number two for favorite tar heel evaaar

i predict the following:

-improper contact with recruits during dead periods.
-the calls with the tutor didn't stop after her firing.
-he had a little chat with officer smitty the night his drunk players flipped their car and skated without getting a sobriety test.
