Does it come with a backstrap?
I've pondered this so correct me if I'm out of line in my thinking. Ankle carry is a great backup, when something is better than nothing. however, it's unideal for primary carry because:
1) limited physical size for proper CC. 2) Limited Size dictates limited firepower 3) Might influence/affect ability to run 4) Longer draw time (more invasive)
P938 is a pretty heavy gun, even though it's not that much bigger than an LCP. Granted it does sport real sights where the LCP is almost without. I'd like to know more why you chose ankle carry. Is this your B/U firearm?

This is what came today
The P938 is my EDC and BUG.
I only ankle carry at work; its the most practical since I wear plain clothes everyday. When I wore polyester everyday, I carried on my armor, cargo pocket or ankle.
Off-duty I carry AIWB.
In my career I've carried a P232, LCR, Glock 27, and now the P938.
I wanted something more than a .380 and w/ more capacity than 5-shots. Also, we don't have a Q-course for 5 shots, so qualifying with a revolver is feat.
I also attended training a couple of months ago that changed my thought on 5-shots though I still think they are awesome for screwing into someones ear.
As a back up/off-duty, the 938 gives me 15 shots of 9mm and a great sighting system in an all metal package.
I thought long and hard about a Glock 33 to be compatible with my primary weapon but I hated how bulky that subs are.

Bright side of the executive order: I'm hoping this eventually leads to more reproduction historical rifles.

I have a NFA Trust, with no lawyer involved. My dealer provided a couple trust templates, I picked one, modified it to fit, and got it notarized. Simple and fast. 9/1/2013 3:59:32 PM |

Yeah, on one hand, with the potentially disproportionate legal penalties, I wouldn't want to fuck it up.
On the other hand, I suspect that it's pretty canned, and that a template would probably be easy and sufficient. 9/1/2013 4:29:45 PM |

I had my trust done by the Apple Law firm. Its a canned Trust that was specifically modified for NFA items. The terms were written to make sure you and your beneficiaries don't break the law and all meet ownership standards. It is 30 or so pages. It was 600 bucks, but I think it was well worth it. Each state may have different laws, so a blanket trust is a little sketchy to me.
I now own several cans.
A .22 suppressor is fun. Just make sure you do your research before you buy ammo. Some ammo is quiet but won't cycle...some isn't much quieter than standard velocity. If you need a good Class 3 item dealer, PM me. I have a good friend in Durham that will take care of you.

I paid $600 to an attorney here in Raleigh to do mine. It was a document I didn't want to risk having errors in it, and the attorney took time to sit down and explain the trust forms and NFA laws to me. He also explained how to set up other family members to be in legal possession of items, inheritance of the trust and NFA items if something were to happen to me, and how to go about changing addresses and moving items later on when I relocate to Maryland. I felt like the consultation alone was worth the money.
I bought cans for a 22, a 45, and a 308. I'd like to Form 1 a can at some point in the near future. 9/1/2013 9:38:03 PM |

Normally I hate Gander but they had Speer 23611 in stock for under $30 so I picked up a box; its been like trying to find Unicorn Fur outside of paying outrageous shipping prices online. Some of there other ammo was on par with Wal-Marts new(ish) prices and they had some of the cheapest prices on Speer Lawman I've seen outside of mythical deals on the internet. However, they did have a 50 round box of Federal .357 Sig RN for $70 9/3/2013 2:46:47 PM |

what was .22 LR going for before all the nutters and rednecks went full-retard? Wal-Mart had it for ~4.5 cents/rd today. I bought a 225 rd box (I already had ~500 rds from leftover from years ago).
got some .380, too.
I can't figure out why in the hell 6.5 Creedmoor match ammo is tough to come by, unless it's just that they aren't producing any due to using the facilities to load as much .308 and .223 as possible. 9/4/2013 8:28:09 PM |

Anyone use an ultra sonic case cleaner?
Any better then a media thing ? 9/5/2013 9:07:45 PM |
NeuseRvrRat hello Mr. NSA! 35376 Posts user info edit post |
i have tried all manner of case cleaning. they all have their pros and cons.
it kinda depends on what condition your brass is in and how clean you want it. for most folks, i'd suggest avoiding the hassle of getting your brass wet, rinsing, drying, etc.
i used the harbor freight ultrasonic. it's the same as the lyman model. it worked ok with the right mix of chemicals. it'll only go for 8 mins at a time, so you have to go back to it every 8 mins and set it to run again. it would eventually remove carbon fouling, but it took a while. i wouldn't recommend ultrasonic for cleaning brass that hits the ground (bolt guns, single shots, etc would be fine). i don't use it for cleaning brass anymore, but it's extremely handy for cleaning guns. i can drop a pistol frame in there or a trigger group. i've used it for cleaning all sorts of shit like lawnmower carburetors and such. also, you have to decap your brass before wet cleaning or else it's hell getting all the water out and getting them dry.
i used a vibratory. tried both corncob and walnut shell. they work great for general cleaning of brass. don't get the treated media. it creates lots of dust. just get basic walnut or corncob and add some car or metal polish. never use Brasso or any other ammonia-based cleaner on your brass. the media will eventually get dusty, so then you can just run it outside with the lid off.
what i've eventually settled on now is a Thumler's Model B high speed rotary tumbler. i use it to wet tumble in stainless steel pins. i got them from http://www.stainlesstumblingmedia.com when it was a fairly new thing, but a lot of other places are selling it now. i use water, liquid dish detergent, and Lemishine (citric acid powder with the dish washing stuff at walmart). this method results in brass that is shinier than new. there are pics in my gallery. i've got some really nasty 5.56 brass off police ranges in the desert or somewhere out west and it came out looking new. once again, you need to decap before wet tumbling. brass doesn't always need such a thorough cleaning, so the cool thing about the Thumler's or any other rotary tumbler is you can also use it to dry tumble in walnut shell or corncob media. i use the lysol and clorox wipe containers for dry tumbling small batches on the rotary. this allows me to always keep the SS pins in the thumler's drum and i never have to dry it out.
drying brass can be a pain, but i have found a method that i've been preaching on gun forums for a while now. i strain the water off and dump all the pins and triple rinse. then i dump them on a towel and pat them dry. throw them in a mesh lingerie bag like my wife uses for washing delicates and shit. i shut the zipper end of the bag in the top of the clothes dryer door so that it hangs down near the lint trap but won't hit the spinning drum. i run it on delicate (lower temps) for 20 or 30 mins and it's ready to go. i'm told that new dryers often have a stationary rack for drying shoes and such and you could just lay the mesh bag on that rack. some folks lay them on a cookie sheet in the driveway in the sun or some even put them in the oven at 200 deg F. you have to be careful and not get them too hot or you will anneal the brass and it will cause a KFB in your rifle. my method is very quick and safe.
but for most folks i'd recommend regular dry tumbling with walnut or corncob. you could always invest in a thumler's and just use it for dry tumbling and then go wet if you ever decide you need to. after many years of use, the thumler's motor will eventually burn up. they're chinese or something because there aren't even any US companies making little motors like this anymore. the cool thing about thumler's is they've been around forever and are a standard in rock tumbling, so you can get parts and they're reasonably priced.
if you decide to go vibratory, i would suggest Berry's Manufacturing. this same tumbler is sold under several brands. Cabela's brand, for one. they're pretty good machines, especially for the price if you can catch them on sale at Midway. i had a cabela's that i sold to my uncle when i got the thumler's. before that i had a harbor freight vibratory that i burned up pretty quick.

Looks like the hammer spring to me.
Anyway, separate thought. I always kinda wanted a 20ga semi-auto, and my girlfriend being too much of a wuss to shoot with me any gave me the excuse.
I've been eyeing the Yildiz shotguns that are sold exclusively at Academy stores for awhile, and for the money it looked really good so I grabbed an A71 20ga youth (26 inch barrel).
For the money ($379) its pretty god damn amazing. As soon as my shitty Mossberg pump gets back from the gunsmith its probably toast after I fire through the rest of its ammo.
The wood on the Yildiz looks great (its Turkish), and the fit & finish is probably the best ive ever seen under $700 or so. It appears to be very well engineered and also takes 3 inch shells.
Not going to lie, Im not the biggest person and it fits me very well. Gas system appears to be simpler than Mossberg or Remington and doesnt have any rubber O-rings like Remington or CZ.
Academy is the exclusive importer/seller of these weapons in the US and if something goes wrong with it you can just take it to the store and they will ship it to TX free for repair. Depending on the problem that could be free as well. Of course these guys could just be stupid dicks, but their story seems to be corroborated online on various forums.
Based on what ive seen so far I doubt ill have any issues. Nice to know at least! Reminds me of Rugers "no questions asked" policy. It seems everytime I call them for some random screw or doo-dad they just send it to me free. Ive shipped Taurus products to Florida before to be serviced (for free) and they even reimbursed me shipping.
Maybe I just have good luck? Or maybe these companies are just super.
Anyway, ill continue my review of the Yildiz if anyone has any specific questions. Even the box, manual, choke tubes, and wrench looked great and were packaged nice. This damn thing came with 6 chokes (all packaged in little plastic screw tubes).

Samson Evo tube is nice. For the price, it oughta be. It's factory equipped on one of my guns, and I dig it--light, comfortable, rails where they should be, and at least as importantly, not where they shouldn't be. I just wish I could remove the top rail to save weight, as my Eotech is mounted on top of the upper rx, not the free-float tube.
I don't know why there aren't more tubes like it, and at lower cost. 9/11/2013 1:10:20 AM |
