Quote : | "PHIL ROGERS CHICAGO TRIBUNE BASEBALL COLUMNIST 06/21/2006
CHICAGO -- Oh, brother.
Tony La Russa is a good guy, but he never has been a good loser. Maybe it was just coincidence that his pitcher, Sidney Ponson, hit back-to-back batters with pitches deep into the White Sox's pounding Tuesday night of La Russa's St. Louis Cardinals.
After all, the bases were loaded. La Russa wouldn't order beanballs with the bases loaded, would he?
Would he?
It has been a long time since that night he fired that bat onto the screen at the old Comiskey Park, but that doesn't mean there aren't still nights the testosterone gets the best of him.
Unfortunately, the latest episode of 29 Evil Teams Vs. La Russa's Righteous Warriors came on the first night the White Sox played at U.S. Cellular since the Sean Tracey incident in Texas.
Before Tuesday's resounding 20-6 victory, Ozzie Guillen explained he was so steamed at Tracey for not retaliating after Texas pitchers twice hit A.J. Pierzynski because it was the fourth time this season he felt his pitchers hadn't protected his hitters. There was no way a Cardinal wasn't going to pay this time.
"I'm going to show you I'm not intimidated," Guillen said. "I don't care who you are. You're not going to treat me like a little (kid)."
David Riske, making his first outing in a White Sox home uniform, did what Tracey did not that night in Texas. He plunked St. Louis' Chris Duncan, the son of long-time La Russa pitching coach Dave Duncan, in the rear end with a pitch in the seventh after Ponson hit Brian Anderson and Pablo Ozuna in the sixth.
This was baseball justice, but the system is unjust. Because Larry Young's crew of umpires warned both benches after Ponson hit Ozuna, running the White Sox lead to 19-2, Guillen was ejected along with Riske while La Russa continued to wear a path in the grass going to the mound.
And afterward La Russa could plead innocence, as he always does -- well, except in Buzz Bissinger's book, when he explained the art of retaliation as it applies to the Cubs-Cardinals series.
For the Cardinals to be hitting White Sox hitters intentionally this night would have been the worst kind of weak. The only thing the Sox did to show up La Russa's Cardinals was to bludgeon them into submission via 24 hits, including nine in a span of 10 batters off Mark Mulder, who pitched like he must be hurt.
You can understand if La Russa's pride was bruised. There were some balls absolutely crushed, including four home runs. This wasn't how he envisioned returning to the South Side on the 20th anniversary of his being fired as the Sox manager.
This game must have been a reminder how far the Cardinals and others among the National League's best teams have fallen behind the top teams in the American League. There are at least four AL teams better than any in the NL, and that list could grow as Toronto and Oakland improve.
The best teams in the NL, the Cardinals and the Mets, are light heavyweights, at best. Everything has to go right for them, as well as any other NL team, when they compete against teams in the league smart enough to have a designated hitter.
The American League, in the words of one veteran in the White Sox clubhouse, is "the man's league." He didn't want to come across as a blowhard, but he's right.
This is an AL age, and there's no end in sight. Consider last weekend's slate of interleague play, which saw the AL go 29-13, including seven sweeps. Four of those, by the White Sox, Red Sox, Tigers and Twins, were in NL parks. That means they came about despite those quaint, if outdated, rules that require pitchers to hit.
Those results are in keeping with those in the more important meetings. American League teams have won 10 of the last 14 World Series, including runs by the Blue Jays (1992-93) and Yankees (1996, `98-2000), and 11 of the last 15 All-Star Games.
This is no fluke. There are simply more good hitters in the AL, and that forces AL pitchers to do one of three things: Get mentally tough enough to survive without easy outs in the lineup, go home or wheedle your way onto one of the 16 NL teams.
"The American League, with all due respect, all the people who know about baseball know the American League is better now than the National League," Guillen said. "If I was a pitcher and somebody said, `What league do you want to pitch in?,' I'm going to the National League. You look at Detroit, and they have (Brandon) Inge and (Chris) Shelton hitting eighth and ninth. Are you kidding me?"
St. Louis pitchers could not contain White Sox hitters in the opener of a series that could have happened last October if Roy Oswalt had not gotten in the way. It's no surprise that their frustrations led to another ugly encounter for the Sox, who don't quite understand why they're being used for target practice.
Guillen is being portrayed as a headhunter for his much-replayed reaction to Tracey not hitting Hank Blalock. But he points out the facts don't merit the reputation. In his three years as the White Sox manager, his pitchers have hit 125 batters while 173 of his batters have gotten plunked.
Let's hope those totals don't climb some more while Guillen is managing against his mentor." |

Woot.
1-0
I like good pitching.
So what are the Cards best and worst moves in recent history. Here's a few of my picks.
Best: -Picking Albert Pujols in the 13th round of the 99 draft. -Getting Chris Carpenter back from the Jays. -Trading for Woody Williams. -Trading for Mark MacGwire. -Signing Jim Edmonds. -Rolen for Polanco (Bud Smith and Doug Nickel have fallen off the map). -Acquiring Tony Larussa.
Worst: -Letting Matt Morris get away. -Darryl Kile dying. -Sidney Ponson. -Mark Mulder for Danny Haren and Kiko Calero. 7/26/2006 12:07:31 AM |

^^The trade for Larry Walker turned out good, he produced when he played. The trade for Will Clark was super good back a few years.
The best trade has actually been giving up J.D. Drew and Ray King for Jason Marquis and Adam Wainright. The Braves have neither player and Marquis has been solid and Wainright is gonna be good one day. 7/26/2006 12:52:31 AM |

and yeah, i'm gonna half-heartedly agree, the little time i've spent in STL, and the little time i've read/listened to the StL media, it really seems like when it goes right - well thats what its supposed to do; but when it goes wrong - OH FUCK, FIRE THAT LAW DEGREE MOTHERFUCKER
