LeRoy Burgess Pulls Commitment Trigger

By Stacey Dean
Expert Recruiting Analyst
Posted Dec 18, 2007

6-1, 295-pound Leroy Burgess elects to stick closer to home by pulling the commitment trigger in favor of N.C. State over Kansas State and Oklahoma State. "It was extremely hard to tell the coaches No," but that is exactly what he made sure he did before we tossed out his "Burgess to the Wolfpack" commitment story.

This was one of the toughest decisions LeRoy Burgess has ever made in his life...

"Man, it was hard to pick only one," Burgess explaining the decision making process said, "I wish I could play for all three. But I went with N.C. State."

"My mom said she wanted to see me play and as I thought about the last game I played at Georgia Military Institute as her last home game I just could not see myself doing that. I want my mom and family to be able to come and watch me play."

Burgess' parents live in South Carolina. So one can see how proximity played a role in the 4-star (per KStateFans.com) trench warrior's decision. But there were a couple of other factors leading him to the Wolfpack.

"Coach O'Brien had a lot of success at Boston College and I think he is going to have early success at B.C. (misprint?) too," Burgess said. "He's a smart coach. Also, I was pretty close to Keith Willis who was assigned to recruit me. But in the end, I just wanted to stick closer to home so my mom, and my family, could come see me play."

Thoughts On Kansas State: "I will always love K-State. They were my first offer and I will never forget that. I wish they were closer to home so I could have gone there. And Coach Mo Latimore is as cool as anyone out there. I had great time on my visit. I almost wish I had not taken the trip to Manhattan because it just made everything that much more difficult to tell you the truth."

On Oklahoma State: "I thought it was cool how Coach Tim Beckman came to my house to do an in-home visit. You know he is from Ohio State and all and now at Oklahoma State as their defensive coordinator. And then on my official visit to Stillwater I will always remember the one-on-one conversation I had with head coach Mike Gundy. No one really knows how cool he is but I did when we sat down to talk, just me and him. So, it's tough to tell those guys, "No," too. I also really liked Coach Todd Meachem too. He used to coach at GMI. So, it was a lot of fun talking to Coach Meach..."

What N.C. State lands is a country kid who is mostly quiet, keeps to himself, a yes-sir, no-sir kid with a work ethic of an iron worker. We broke through with LeRoy and he has a funny side to him too. But you got to get closer to him to see it. We did and wish LeRoy the best!

SOPH Season Stat Package: "30+ tackles, 16.5 TFLs, 6.5 sacks, 7-8 QB knockdowns, 40 pressures, 2 Tipped Passes."

Weight Room Numbers: "This past summer I benched 355, squat was 525 and my power clean was 305."

Other Notes to Consider...

Eligibility:Burgess enrolls in the spring and has three years to play two.

i don't think burgess will enroll for the spring semester. 6.5 sacks and 40 QB pressures for a DT is quite impressive

why don't you think that? the article said he would.

I've seen that he might have some transferring issues as well. Looks like he might not be able to enroll until May. But hopefully he'll be here in January.

That's 21 commitments and we are looking to take a/b 27

my realistic wishlist

J.T. Floyd
Leon Mackey
Greg Scruggs
Marcus Udell (a player we haven't really pushed for but I would love to get him to add CB depth)
Sterling Lucas
One more offensive Lineman (Cooper, or JC player)........Cooper is a longshot though

I know this isn't recruiting related, but I didn't want to create a whole new thread on this. I didn't realize Daniel Evans graduated - I guess that makes sense since he's a redshirt junior. I wonder if he'll come back to play for his last year of eligibility..

^^that's dumb logic

how many kids get a chance to play the sport that they love (and quarterback at that) in front of 60,000 people?

why in the hell would he leave when he'll probably start next year unless somebody steps up

somebody better step up

if those turds on the QB depth chart don't recognize the job is there for the taking, then we should scrap all of them.

We're gonna red-shirt Glennon his first year more than likely, so one of our current guys has to step it up.

I was hoping Burke would be the answer, but it appears that Russell Wilson might be the answer, apparently he and Jay Smith were doing big things on the scout team.

I don't care who it is, so long as he can throw an accurate deep ball, make decent reads to underneath routes and not look like a flimsy fifth grader.

uhh, same answer as before, and this is only from a career perspective - five or so years down the road when he's 27 working alongside his peers, they'll be getting promoted to managers and making more money since they'll have an extra year of work experience, and he'll be kicking himself for not starting work when he could have, instead of fuckin around for a year playing football

but i guess he would be pretty attractive as a prospective employee, being a college quarterback and all, although jay davis didn't seem to a get an impressive start

^ I doubt getting into the workforce one year later is going to have a drastic impact on his career.

I think looking back, most people would say they would give up their first year of work to play college football for a season.
I know I would.

If we could pull in a couple of highly rated WRs the next couple of years then our QB situation could look a whole lot better with Glennon at the helm.

With Jay Smith(4* WR from last year) red-shirting and our young WR's playing now, I think Glennon will come in with a mature group of WR's and could have some real success early. And hopefully we can use Glennon's rankings and accolades partnered with the success of Bible and TOB to pull in some more talented WR. I read Graham is a deep-threat speed WR, so hopefully he RS's and can come in with Glennon and already have some cohesion between those 2.

I doubt we land D. Walker (5* WR) but maybe we can surprise some people and grab him away from PSU. We also have a couple of other 4-Star WR's showing interest in us, so maybe we can pull one of them.

Jay Davis is the QB coach at Grambling State. That's not a bad start for a young guy. Maybe he can become an OC at a small school sometime in the next few years.

You know who has it good though. Major Fucking Applewhite. That dude is only 29 and is already an OC at a big time BCS school (Alabama) and is pulling in $250,000 per year. That's almost unheard of to be that young and already have that good of a position in coaching.

and Jay DAvis actually had better stats than you would think, he was just in a terrible position thrown in behind PR...look and compare his numbers to Evans, you will be HIGHLY surprised.

every QB since Rivers - we're all "omg he sux, he should play badminton".

maybe its not entirely their fault. it takes a while to build a sustainable line and a reliable offensive system. so unless we get another P Riv, we need to be patient about critiquing QBs

Sucky players know why they suck. That's why they can easily tell others how not to suck.

I'm not buying into the idea of Glennon redshirting. Sure, if Beck or Evans or Wilson or Burke or Jesus steps up and is more than capable, I'd buy it.

But Glennon was just named All State 1st Team (VA), Gatorade Player of the Year for Virginia, The Washington Post's Offensive Player of the Year, 3A Player of the Year....

I think we won't see him start at the beginning of the year, but I'd expect to see him play some in the first 4 games or so and then be starting at some point in the fall.

I know we can't buy in to the "heralded savior" of the program as we've all been burnt before, but this kid seems pretty fucking good.

[Edited on December 21, 2007 at 10:58 AM. Reason : bottom line, he should get some experience this year so hes ready for 09]

I'd like to see her in a redshirt.

Ok, just spreadin the holiday cheer. Back to football recruiting.

Supposedly Elton Ford is listening to Petrino and the Razorbacks. His HS coach is a ex-razorback and one of his teamates has already committed there. So who knows

under armor all-star game practice is on espnu right now from 3 til 6

Glennon is supposedly going to be the starting QB for his team and Barnes is on the team as well.

Although we are a longshot for Deion Walker but he is also on the team

Deion Walker is going to decide at the game on Saturday.

I was watching Glennon and he is every bit of 6'6". He looks like the tallest player out there. There was some discussion by the ESPNU recruiting gurus about him and Hansen (UNC commit and Glennon teammate at the UA game). The jest was that Glennon is a stretch the field passer with a huge arm and Hansen is a dink and dunk passer because of his lack of arm strength.

they were talking about him really big in the practice yesterday

the coaches made the comment that he is a college ready player already and just needs to learn the coverages, one said he even reminded them of a sophomore matt ryan.

said his touch on the deep ball and ability to throw into coverage and over passes was amazing.

I've seen Glennon play twice in person. He definitely is every bit of 6'6", and throws a very nice tight spiral, with a high release point. I agree with that analysis. If he learns to read college coverages and use good judgement (not saying he can't, but it's tough to evaluate against HS defenses) he is legit. I hope our S & C staff already have him on a good lifting program.

yea i think we're still a longshot for walker... but i talked to someone last night who is pretty close to the situation. remember, walker is from NC and has a lot of ties to NCSU...

but the story i got was that his HS coach in VA is really pushing Penn State. apparently he is a bigger PSU homer than some of the NC HS coaches are with UNC. Deion likes PSU but understands Paterno won't be around much longer and also how PSU has never used their WR's very well.

FSU was dropped a few weeks ago. Deion just didn't "feel good" about FSU.

Notre Dame is a place his family is pushing because of their national exposure. They feel that Weiss/ND would give him te best shot at showcasing his skills for the next level.

The darkhorse is apparently NC State. He has been to Raleigh 6-7 times on his own dime. If he goes with his heart rather than going with what his coach or family wants, he could commit to the Wolfpack.

I was also told that most of Deion's "interviews" are given by his coach and not actually Deion. This is getting very interesting.

Does he go to PSU to please his Coach? Does he go to ND to please his family? Does he follow his heart and possibly end up at NC State?

Hopefully him, Barnes, and Glennon hit it off this week.

i'd love to see one of our qb's not suck so he can redshirt.........he prolly wont be ready (rivers enrolled early) and when he's a senior we are going to wish we had him for that one extra year

however if we dont suck next year b/c of him then more power to him and play em

one thing helping glennon is that his HS basically ran the same offense we have at NC State. He is also used to being under center instead of in shotgun.....a rarity for HS QB's. Don't be surprised if he starts next season, but im with you guys....i hope someone steps up and he can redshirt
