even without the forfeited wins/sanctions/penalties, 'ol Butch wasn't even that great of a coach. I mean, I guess you could argue that he had the program on the rise, but obviously he had to cut corners to get there...sooooo, whole lotta good that did them.
honestly, i just don't understand why fans are so defensive of him. i'd like to think that if it were us, many state fans would want the coach out the door. but that's probably my bias shining through.

I, and others on here, have already stated before that if TOB gets the NCAA on campus and has the sort of shit that was going on at UNC, we would want him fired. I could see them trying to hang onto a Jim Tressel type of coach, but the dude never made it over .500 in conference play. They were mesmerized by the stars they were pulling in and got all hyped up, and just ignored the fact that he was a terrible gameday coach. 7/28/2011 6:52:36 PM |

Our fan base would make a coach's life a nightmare for bringing that much heat to campus. We sure as piss wouldn't start a flying banner fund, unless the banner had a giant middle finger printed on it and it was on fire in the air.7/28/2011 7:13:39 PM |

I agree. Butch is a great recruiter and did very good things for UNC's football program, but in simple wins/losses...he's pretty average. 15-17 in the ACC? And they are turning on the administration left and right to bring this guy back?
Butch getting fired would be comparable to Chuck being fired after his 4th year...We had more success in Chuck's first 4 years than they did in Butch's, but the situations are similar enough. Chuck was 34-15 after 4 seasons (17-15 in ACC). Had we gotten into trouble for NCAA violations how upset would State fans had been about firing Amato? That's an honest question...I don't know. It's hard to think about. Chuck (in hindsight, Philip Rivers) had us rolling at that point...we thought he was the man. Recruiting was good, the results were there, etc. But I do feel like if Chuck had been at the helm when major violations occurred, we'd be much more rational about his firing (regardless of the timing). State fans hate negative attention and publicity directed towards our the school and athletic program...I don't think we'd stand for it.
For whatever reason, UNC fans see BD as the best they can do...they do not think they can land a coach better than him. And they probably won't be able to get a coach with a better track record than BD, but BD wasn't that great...certainly not irreplaceable I don't think. They should go after Skip Holtz IMO...don't know if he'd leave USF though.

I believe Skip's wife has family in FL. Plus why would he want to take over a team that is going to be hamstrung by the NCAA? At USF he even though they are the 4th best option for most kids in the state, those kids would be top 20 in most other states, maybe even top 10. With that kind of talent, and provided he develops it right, he can win the Big East and have them in a BCS bowl, something UNC won't be sniffing for a long time, if ever. 7/28/2011 7:20:25 PM |

^^wasn't Herring only here 1 year? IIRC, that's the year we had the nation's best D?
and ^, I agree. He probably shouldn't and won't leave USF (especially considering UNC will be on probation and other sanctions). But a coach like that wouldn't be much of a drop off from BD...in fact, Skip is probably a better in-game coach than BD.

the word "college" usually refers to a school with only a technical and undergraduate focus. i think a lot of people (unless they're super-fucking old) use the term "state college" to belittle state's academics and to ignore the many graduate level programs/research institutions the university has. i might be alone in this opinion, but it just seems petty to do that.

Anytime an entire academic faction doesn't care about plagiarism, you've got major issues. If you're the CEO at the top of all the violators you have to go. It's that simple, do not overthink this. No, useless Walmart IC posters, Deems May, Dick Baddour, IC writers, former players, etc etc, no one cares about your football team going down the tube. No one in charge at least. This issue wasn't going away and getting rid of Butch was the only solution, and should have been done in December. The idiots mentioned above would still have been just as bitter had Davis been fired in December, they are just saying they wouldn't have been. They know Butch is paramount to UNC even having a .500 season. Insulting everyone under the sun about Butch being fired = I'm mad were not getting a winnning product on the field (although this year they have plenty of talent floodgates will really open next year).
Keep in mind the above has nothing to do with the agent who was an associate head coach, the coke dealer hooking up the players and hanging out in the weight room, the players getting jewelery and then lying to the NCAA about it, the players getting flights across the country and lying to the NCAA about it, the 2000 parking tickets, 90 of which went to one player, etc etc.
Good luck with the NCAA in October, I'm sure they agree you've been so cooperative considering Butch's emails and 216 numbers are being guarded like Fort Knox. 7/28/2011 10:37:59 PM |

Look, I want to win in football, but you just can't ignore the fact that UNC football was hit with 9 major violations. The football program handed the academics the axe on a silver platter and confirmed all their worst nightmares and stereotypes. I wish it had never happened, but it did.
BATarHeel05 wrote: This is such ********. The violations that the NCAA accussed us of in no way indicate any kind of inheret or systematic problems with our football program.
What they do indicate are that individuals will make bad decisions - be it an assistant coach, football student athletes, tutors in the Academic Support Program (note: that's the academic side, not football), individuals in the honor court (again, the academic side) and individuals in South Building (again, the academic side).
In my four years at Carolina, I knew students who flunked out, I knew students who cheated, I knew students who got kicked out for dealing drugs, I knew students who committed other crimes. They were regular students, not athletes.
They were also individuals. Individuals do wrong. You do not judge an organization based on whether or not individuals within that organization are perfect or not. You judge the organization based on the steps they take to do their best to ensure that their individuals are doing right, and how the organization responds when individuals do stray from that path. By any measure, Carolina Football was a positive example in BOTH of these respects. The NCAA said that our controls were well above average, and it only takes a quick look around the college football landscape - at GT, at LSU, at OSU, at USC, at UT, at Bama, etc. - to note that the response of our football program was also above average." |

Times have changed. My inbox has been filled with people wanting shirts. So, on the site http://www.SupportButchShirts.com we are selling a V2 shirt, "I Don't Support Thorp" (something many people suggested).
In my mind, it is SO IMPORTANT for us to be there on Saturdays supporting our players. But that doesn't mean we don't have a say-so in the way things are run with the administration.
As we did last year for Va Tech game, lets get the stadium packed again in these for the JMU game. Last year, we had well over 5,000+ fans in the shirts, and our voice was heard. It was all over the news as you all know. AND, we need to be lined up at the Old Well Walk in our shirts.
I've already had one network contact me.
Now, let's make our voice heard and put the pressure on Thorp. I'll be taking orders until August 12th at which time they'll go into production and to you by August 26th.
Let's make our voice known during the first game on Sept 3.
