Btw I think the effort we were spending to get a JUCO safety (that we didn't get) shows the coaches confidence in our current secondary lineup for next year. 12/13/2017 12:43:10 PM |

^I honestly think it was a "maddox or Ingle" type of thing. Maddox would have come in with 3 years to play. Ingle has 4. So maddox wasn't a TRUE juco in that he is expected to come in ready to play right away with only 2 to go.
We've got some experience in the back 4 now. No reason they shouldn't take a step up in production. 12/13/2017 12:50:22 PM |

I think the coaches just wanted good players that can contribute early and would have taken the first one to commit.
From what I've read most expect Ingle to push for playing time next year at nickel and KR.
Also have to look at how many DB injuries we had this year, can't fault the coaches for liking the idea of bringing in bodies to contribute early. 12/13/2017 1:40:30 PM |

^^since they are still going after Palmer, it may not have been an "or" life conventional wisdom said.
Also back 5, although that nickel position could be filled by converted LB I suppose. 12/13/2017 2:23:09 PM |

IMO, Richardson should go; Hines should defiantly stay. Finley is a tough one b/c hes older. This seems to be a draft with several good QB's so his draft rank wont be real high but I haven't looked into who will be coming out next year 12/18/2017 8:33:04 AM |

Hines would be a bit of a shock, don't think his draft stock is super high right now.
Richardson could go, draft stock isn't great but he's had a lot of issues with the staff and being suspended, though he seemed to have a much better year this year after he came back.
Finley really seems 50-50. Almost seems like a Trevor Lacey deal where if he posted those numbers and was a true JR he'd be back, but given his age it's hard to tell. 12/18/2017 8:35:03 AM |

Ted Roof coming on as 10th assistant. Co-defensive coordinator. With a focus on secondary. Sounds good to me. 12/22/2017 5:53:59 PM |

He's co-DC here, so a lateral move for him title wise.
Story is Ga Tech was looking to get rid of him, and NC State hiring him away let's that happen without getting egg on anyone's face. 12/23/2017 8:12:37 AM |

I guess people aren't excited because they think of his tenure at Duke but as a DC, he's a game-changer. When this guy shows up, the defense always makes a significant improvement in his first year.
Quote : | "He was nominated for the 2000 Broyles Award, an annual honor given to the nation's top assistant coach, when his defense finished the season ranked 12th in the nation in rushing defense and 20th in scoring defense. The following season, the Yellow Jackets were again one of the top defenses in the nation, ranking 23rd nationally in total defense and 32nd against the run." |
Quote : | " Roof left Georgia Tech to become the defensive coordinator at Duke for the 2002 season. Roof's instruction brought marked improvement to the Duke Blue Devils defense, which the ACC in rushing defense after finishing ninth in the league the previous year. From 2001 to 2002, the Blue Devils moved from ninth to fifth in the ACC and from 113th to 58th nationally in total defense. They progressed in passing defense in the 2003 season, jumping to third-place in the ACC from ninth the previous year. " |
Quote : | "Despite the dismal record of Duke teams under Roof, his aggressive defenses consistently ranked in the top-30 nationally in tackles behind the line of scrimmage.[3][4]" |
Quote : | "nder just one season of Roof's tutelage, the Gophers made tremendous improvements to give up 160 fewer passing yards per game and over 135 fewer total yards when compared to the previous year's 119th ranked defense. Besides the nation's worst total defense, Roof also inherited a squad which had ranked 115th in pass defense, 114th in rushing defense and 109th in scoring defense in 2007. Roof's defense made strides throughout the season and finished ranked in the top-25 in both sacks[7] and tackles for loss[8] after being ranked 103rd[9] and 116th[10] the previous season. Roof's defense created 31 turnovers, second most in the Big Ten and 11th nationally. They were seventh in the nation causing fumbles (16), fueling the team's 16th ranking in turnover margin. Overall, the scoring defense improved to 61st, rushing defense to 69th, total defense to 79th and pass defense to 93rd. This quick turn-around on defense contributed to the Golden Gophers improving their record from 1–11 to 7–6 and garnering an appearance in the 2008 Insight Bowl." |
Quote : | "Ted has played an important role in the success of our football program, helping Auburn win 29 games in three years, including a national championship last season. " |
Quote : | "Despite the difficult conditions of the program, Roof led the defense to rank second in the Big Ten Conference in scoring defense, led the league in sacks, ranked first in red-zone defense and third in turnover margin. Nationally, Penn State ranked tied for first in red-zone defense, 15th in sacks,[14] 16th in scoring defense,[15] 23rd in rushing defense, 28th in pass efficiency defense and 29th in total defense." |
Hopefully that gives you some context on why we are going to EXPLODE defensively next year.12/27/2017 2:56:34 PM |

Did anyone doubt Hines would run fast though? He's a track star.
I think the more impressive thing is that Barkley put up 29 reps on the bench yesterday and posted a 4.41 today. That's crazy.
Hines might have moved his draft stock up slightly, but it's still not a big jump. Still think he's looking at 4th round at best right now. 3/2/2018 3:51:32 PM |

Eh, I think Hines draft stock will improve moreso from the other running drills as well as route running at the combine. He's not competing against the likes of Barkley/Chubb/Michel/etc who are going to be 3 down backs. He's gonna be a slot receiver/change of pace back and I think his time in college spent as a WR will give him a boost over other RBs who never played WR.
But it's still nice to be able to say he's the fastest. Also I don't think Barkley beasting the combine is a surprise to anyone. Dude is legitimately the best player in the draft.] 3/2/2018 3:56:55 PM |

Right. Seems like everybody’s time at the combine is slower than what people advertised their time to be in college. A lotta “so and so run a 4.3” is just a 4.5 at the combine.3/2/2018 6:16:22 PM |
