ahhh I see
I'm super paranoid about getting pregnant... mainly because they warn you like crazy about this medicine I'm taking (supposedly messes up birth control and can cause birth defects). So I'm going to have to plan it out in detail when that time comes... I want to be off the meds for at least a month 6/9/2011 9:49:02 PM |

Some people change their minds. Some people don't. I'd say don't do anything irreversible because you never know what will happen in the future. IE one of you may die in an accident and the survivor remarries someone who hardcore wants kids. 6/9/2011 9:54:22 PM |

Definitely a good reason to plan it out, Sam!
I mean it's possible to change your mind...but I think you know whether you do or not. And I think not wanting kids is a.o.k 6/9/2011 9:56:16 PM |

Yeah... I researched it and they don't think it actually does increase the risks but at the same time, I see people quite frequently now who fell into that low chance so I know it's possible :\
As for the changing of the minds... idk, I guess you could.
My aunt and uncle on my mom's side don't have any youngins. They're the only ones (on BOTH sides) that aren't divorced. 6/9/2011 9:58:39 PM |

I only say it because my husband's cousin married a woman who had her tubes tied when she was younger. He really wanted one kid of his own and they spent a lot of money trying to reverse it/get preggers without success.
A Vasectomy is at least easier to reverse and you can always but your boys on ice just in case. 6/9/2011 10:00:13 PM |

I have quite a few married friends who don't want children. I don't think there is anything wrong with it - it your life.
And I think that once you reach a certain age (like adulthood) you kind of know what you want to do when it comes to having kids.6/9/2011 10:00:14 PM |

i mean, i'm already helping to feed a bunch of crotchfruit every time i pay my taxes. that's enough for me.

I've been thinking about two things recently
1. Being a surrogate for my friend who is having a lot of trouble getting pregnant 2. Adopting a special needs child 6/9/2011 10:10:24 PM |

GGMon, seeing as I plan on working in the pediatrics field as well, I assure you I'll be seeing plenty of special needs children and will learn what it takes to raise them right. And while I have a job, too! Imagine that.
I said the black lab mix thing because they're the least adopted type of dog in shelters because there's so many of them
As for the special needs child, they get put up for adoption as well, and I'm sure get adopted as a lesser rate... They need the lovin' too!

I help volunteer with special needs adults from time to time to try and get out of hell. I can say that a special needs individual isn't an 18 years and done commitment, it's a for life one. Then a lot of them live in special care provider homes. Like other users said, do some research. Again for me, working with special needs individuals is like watching someone elses kids, it's not bad for a little while but you wouldn't want to do it full time. Also, the hardest part for me at first was stopping using the word retarded in everyday talk, man, I loved using that word. Now I actively think about it. 6/9/2011 10:25:48 PM |

^2 Oh, I realize that. Even for the "higher functioning" individuals you're less likely to see them off to live in their own apartment. Maybe an assisted living program, but rarely on their own... But don't worry, I definitely realize it would be a big decision. Hell, even being a surrogate would be a big decision. And it's not just my decision - gotta consider Eric's feelings as well.

Want me to send you a picture of me beaming from ear to ear with a ___ Pediatric Genetics letterhead? (I can keep you updated on where I get hired. Shooting for somewhere in NC or TN.)

If Sam ends up being just a quarter as knowledgeable as our genetic counselor, she'll be better positioned and more "in the know" about what it takes to raise a special needs child and all of the long term implications/effects of the child's particular problems than most people. 6/9/2011 10:32:53 PM |

Do you base all your life decisions on plots from movies shown on lifetime?
I'll leave you alone now - all the best on your future projects. Hope your life of adopting a special needs while being a surrogate, working 45 hours a week and still keeping your husband happy works well for you.

I wanna be a surrogate so bad. I tell my gay friends to holler when t hey're ready. I'm totally serious. I'd do it for a friend in a heartbeat.
Also why does my dog know when I want to stand up to grab something? She always stretches out and lays her head on my leg so I can't move 6/9/2011 10:54:00 PM |
