I haven't really tried the Maps application yet, other than to play with it on my iPad. I downloaded Waze on my iPhone per some recommendations of others, and it seems to be a pretty good app.

Fortunately I use Navigon on iOS, because the new maps are fucking horrendous.

Compared to Google Maps and hell, even Bing Maps on WP7, the iOS6 Maps are a joke. Btw, Nokia Drive is fucking awesome.

That's where I got mine Friday night ~15 minutes before close. They only had two left in the store by that time, though.

JESUS CHRIST THANK YOU

I just realized that if you use the "Podcast" app they're forcing on everyone, you can do subscriptions and autoupdates directly to the device, bypassing a computer completely

THANK FUCKING CHRIST

Man I just use Stitcher to stream podcasts. Downloading podcasts is for suckers.

Clearly, I don't utilize podcasts like you, but enjoy that sense of irrelevant sense of pride over the app you use!

so is there a trick to getting notifications for email on the home screen? i've got everything enabled that i know of, but it only shows new emails if i consciously open the app and it loads them. there's never a little number in the corner of the app or anything on my lock screen

^^ I don't have any pride in my app, I've used tunein radio also and would have no problem with any other app if it proved to be better.

But I don't know why you would bother downloading them, especially before this update when you had to use your computer.

[Edited on September 25, 2012 at 5:40 PM. Reason : Also, I hope you didn't take the word "suckers" as a personal insult, it was a joke]

^^Settings - Notifications - Mail - Enable view in Lock Screen.

Somehow I missed the fact that iOS 6 now streams songs from iTunes match instead of forcing you to store them locally. That was the only reason I hadn't signed up until now. Well that and the fact that I don't really want to have to import 300+GBs of mp3s through iTunes. Looks like I know what I'll be doing with my free time for the next few days.

it is a preorder i can call tomorrow to see if they are still holding it for me

Regarding the apple podcast app, when i first tried it a few months back i was surprised to see that it is a carbon copy of the Instacast App...which has been out for a few years i think. It is the same exact app..or was a few months back when i first used it. Instacast even syncs with icloud (was pleasantly surprised when all of my podcast subscriptions and playlists came up when i got my 5)

andymac..you dont have to download the podcasts..it is just a way to have all of them in one app and it tells you when a new podcast comes up..you can stream it or download it to listen to when you dont have a connection. it lets you skip in any amount of time you set, forward and back..also has a sleep timer. stuff that the built-in ipod app should have..

It's actually kind of crappy here in DC, but that's only because it won't take you across the city without going through Dupont Circle.

Which is like +30 minutes to any travel.

I agree. I prefer the turn-by-turn interface and the swipe L/R for going between instructions. Search seems to be just fine too. What's all the fuss about, something about public transportation or something?

my main complaint is which road names it decides to show at various zoom levels. It doesn't seem very good at showing the main road names clearly when zoomed out except for interstates and freeways

has anyone that ordered the free case from ZooGue.com received their case or had any updates on shipping? the website won't let you track your order unless you created an account when you ordered, which I did not. Curious to see when these things will arrive.

Regarding the maps - twice already it's taken me to the wrong place. Once it also gave me a less preferable route, where google used to recommend the highway.

I do like how fast they go, but they need refining on several things

Verizon: $177/month for two iPhones (4S and 4) with 1400 shared minutes and 2GB data.

This is ridiculous, considering I'm at work from about 7:00 until 7:00 and can't even bring my phone.

Even Apple agrees that the new Maps sucks:

Quote :
"With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.

While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app.

Wow, Steve would never say something like that. How times have changed...

"Steve would never"

If I never saw those three words placed together again in my entire life, it would be too soon. I like how even the most vocal Apple haters are acting like they know how Steve Jobs would be doing things if he were still alive and that somehow Apple is failing without him. He made plenty of mistakes when he ran things and issued public apologies for them. (Antennagate much?). I don't really see this as that different than Antennagate actually, including the fact that both issues were blown way out of proportion by the media and Apple haters and both have relatively cheap and simple workarounds until the issue can be fixed.

I am not a fan of the new maps app but I am glad they gave google the boot. Google had no reason to innovate with its iOS maps app when it was included so this will force them to do so along with apple. Might suck for the time being but in the long run it will probably be a good thing for consumers.
