I'm obsessed with this now. I've spent like 60 minutes just reading other scout.com boards to see what other schools are saying. 95% are quite pleased. I haven't even touched PackPride yet.

Really, New York Times? Nice time on the article:

maybe they should question if there is similar stuff going on at Appalachian State

where Colin, the UNC fan, went to college

nah, dog. They should first look at every other school, just to be sure, while they ignore the one with the obvious problems. It's only fair!

I thought I read that it was Bryan's asthma medicine. A lot of asthma controlling medication contains anti-inflammatory "corticosteroids".

If I remember correctly the report indicated Marinol which is a cancer drug that is basically pure THC. It is used to improve appetite in chemo patients by giving them the "munchies" but it also has recreational and possible bulking potential leading to it being considered a banned substance by the NCAA. Given that it was found with pot and pot paraphernalia, recreational is the probable culprit.

^if that is the case, i doubt there are many football players that need thc to stimulate their appetite to "bulk-up".
and there's no way that thc could be considered a "ped".
and it's probably banned by the ncaa because it's pot.
and they were definitely using it recreationally (if it was, in fact, found).
(all that is just my opinion)

but i thought it was asthma medicine.
i'm sure some ic'ers will investigate and get to the bottom of this steroid scandal.

[Edited on August 14, 2012 at 9:51 PM. Reason : say what you want about tob, but i just don't see him encouraging ped-use.]

i hope that^^ wasn't in response to me.

i just find it hilarious that it's so obvious that some crazy shit is going on over there, yet some of their fans think it's no worse than some of our players being busted with pot (and maybe some thc cancer drug, or asthma medicine). (and dj greene, but he was suspended for the season back in Feb)

Several people posting the article from CBS sports on Facebook, and they are not even ncsu/duke fans. This latest break is gathering momentum, and that is a good thing.

I also linked the article, and tagged every single unc friend I have. Childish, yes. But damn it felt good!

Yeah, it's odd. ESPN had an article on their front page this morning, but it got replaced within the hour. Not sure if the article itself is still online

ESPN's coverage consists of copying and pasting an AP article and mentioning Pepper's agent in a bullet point above a plug for Woody Durham's book.

Probably because they didn't want the UNC article's headline to immediately refute this one:
Quote :
"
A Step In The Right Direction Football's tumultuous offseason -- at every level -- wasn't all bad.

TMQ applauds a quiet shift that could save the sport."

Well yeah, they have articles still up, but it went from front page to the back logs quickly. I haven't checked tonight extensively, but just sayin'

decent read, for those still thirsting for stuff to read about on the scandal

http://www.riddickandreynolds.com/2012/08/the-packpride-message-boards-where-hatred-opportunity-meet/

Quote :
"Investigative journalism departments used to be the hallmark of local newspapers and television news departments, but in recent years they’ve been trimmed to skeleton crews unable to devote the man hours necessary to do the job of investigation adequately.

But message boards, on the other hand, have man hours in spades. A highly motivated army of unemployed, semi-employed or loosely monitored employees working at mundane jobs can devote vast amounts of time online searching, scouring and theorizing–far more than can be expended by a single journalist. What a message board lacks in access can be offset by sheer community involvement and willpower."

"“I think it is well-nigh impossible to have naturally competitive football and basketball teams and expect those students to behave like everyone else in the classroom,” Smith said. “It’s not realistic. It’s not right to expect these students to put in 40-50 hours of work into their sports each week and expect them to carry the same workload as other students. It’s just absurd. How can you take the marginal student that has been recruited to the university for his athletic talents and put him down in a classroom and expect them to perform at the same level as the other students?”"

That's bullshit. If I can work 40-50 hours a week at my various jobs and get an engineering degree, these athletes should at least be able to get some art appreciation degree while they play their sport. Using the time sports takes as an excuse for poor performance in the classroom is disingenuous. The problem is that these athletes are not mentally prepared or even possibly equipped to handle college academics. The fact of the matter is that you can either be a "public ivy" institution who only accepts and allows athletes into the program who can meet the rigorous academic standards you pretend to uphold, or you can be a program who bends the system to allow athletes who can't or can only partially qualify for your institution in at the expense of your reputation. UNC has errantly attempted to have their cake and eat it, too. Now they are trying to claim that the problem is the expectations on the students? No. In the triangle there are two other universities who accept college athletes who are capable of earning a degree at the university level. The ones who come in and can't cut it don't get propped up by a system established specifically to keep them eligible at all costs.

I only hope that the NCAA shows UNC exactly what those costs are.

bmel's mother was in a class with Michael Jordan and supposedly everyone was failing the class. Near the end of the semester, the coach came in, talked to the professor, and everyone passed the class no problem.

I know we're all excited and that this is a great thing for us as state fans but do we really see anything happening to UNC as a result of this?

Will banners come down...likely not.
Will seasons get canceled, probably not.

I know UNC grads who, some how and some way, don't even know such an investigation is going on. Is the world watching or just us over excited state fans?
