yea that is insane. i don't really get that at all. i mean i know rent is $texas but the people i know that live there aren't living that bad. of course they all have roomies and still pay $1000 for their room. which is expensive as shit obviously but they don't live in a closet either. their places are pretty nice. but they are also home a lot less than people are here, which is totally awesome. just always something going on.

I believe my classmate lived in the upper east side... would that make a difference?

When I interviewed at Mt. Sinai I was all over the rent prices. I would have lived in the student dorms fo sho.

If it's $2k a month for 350sq ft your friends are getting ripped off. That's sky high for the UES.

They aren't getting ripped off now seeing as they don't live there anymore.

When I tried looking for apartments near the school (out of curiosity), all I could find was like $1100 a month for a tiny place

i have a friend that lives in the gramercy park area (around 23rd and 2nd or 3rd or something i can't remember) and she pays $1000 for HER ROOM in a 3bdrm apt

i mean yea, that is a lot compared to NC prices for sure

but she lives in an awesome area and her apt is nice and her room is spacious. i don't know. i know it is WAY more expensive there and at first it is a shock but after having like 863 friends move up there and seeing their places i kinda don't flip anymore about the price

i mean most people i know that moved there downsized. a lot (as far as possessions). and now have no car (or car payment). no car insurance. etc. its definitely a lifestyle change but people make it work. and there are certain trade offs (for example money that goes toward gas and car here goes toward rent there).

i want to make it work. GIVE ME A FUCKING JOB

let's move to NYC, Erica!!!

^4 When I lived in SoHo my rent was $1400, for a 10x10 bedroom in a tiny 3 bdrm apt with a 10x14 main room that was also the kitchen, and one tiny bathroom. There were also no closets in the entire apt. My rent, car payment, gasoline and auto insurance in NC is cheaper than that. But if ya don't like driving its great

shit's ridiculous

well i didn't mean your monthly car payments would = your rent obviously

i meant if you pay $700 in rent here and $300 a month for car shit. then without a car your $300 would probably go into your other living expenses which may or may not include rent!

it is obviously more expensive but if i moved to a city with a reliable and large public transportation system i would sell my car in a heartbeat (that is just me though haha)

and yea it is ridic. but not $2K for 350sq feet ridic. or at least not to my knowledge. no one i know pays that much (for that little).

^I mean the car payment, rent, gasoline, auto insurance combined (per month) is less.

Unlimited 30 day MTA cards (good for subway or bus) are $80 (or maybe slightly more not sure of any recent price increases) so that is nice, especially when you know that price doesn't fluctuate b/c of gasoline prices. Also a lot of businesses let you expense it has a commuting fee so you can usually get them tax free.

ohhhh haha misread. yea i'm sure all of that stuff combined is def less than just your rent up there was. it is crazy expensive.

i'm not saying nyc is my jam or anything. i'd love to live there. i understand why people think it is stupid, though. i know it is mad expensive. so is every other city i'd like to live in, though (compared to here, anyway).

but i definitely would like to live somewhere other than raleigh. and i really do value public transportation. i hate hate HATE commuting in raleigh. but i know raleigh has major commuting issues (so much so it is frequently on the national radar for inefficient traffic). i don't know why i hate it so much, i just do. i'd rather hop on the bus. or subway. i took a really long public opinion phone poll recently about public transportation in raleigh. it was like 45 minutes long. i'm sure most people just hung up on the dude or opted out. but i was like NO I WILL TAKE THIS DAMN SURVEY IF IT KILLS ME.

Strange sight at the neighbor playground:

The local BobbyDigital contingent routinely functions as a hivemind, and thus its usual to see 10-15 of the little fuckers on the slides and monkey bars as once. Only today, their only supervision were a pair of 40 something Indian men in business clothes playing Roshambo with the the seesaw, just annihilating each others genitals with huge smiles on their faces. I'll never understand foreign cultures.
