Shady shit does go on at every major university, there is no doubt. I'm sure there are plenty of blow off classes everywhere, but UNC has gone a step above what I've ever heard of and just made up classes that didn't exist and awarded credits without any coursework. They got caught, now they're going to get their collective dicks slammed in the proverbial car door.

On a lighter note, one of my favorite stories from one of my uncles involves his time at Mizzou. He played golf there and new quite a few of the basketball players and once a semester would take a "basketball team class." One semester it was Library Math. It's as easy as you would think it would be. At the end of the semester one of his basketball player friends, a guy nicknamed Snake, asked him what grade he had earned in the class. My Uncle laughed and told him an A. Snake then said, "Maaaaaaan, I got a D. Coach is gone be pissed."

some half-baked thinking that I recognize will never happen:

-independent club covered by boosters, ticket sales, sponsorship, and such, whether university wants to help or not is their choice
-club pays a license fee to use the university name (that should be worth huge money, Tuscaloosa Elephants: 14 fans show up, Alabama Crimson Tide: sells out Bryant-Denny)
-club pays rent to use the university stadium in cases where university owns said stadium
-club covers the football players' room and board including school, if the club wants to pay the players money on top of that, power to them
-said club no longer has tax exemption
-no more bullshit with academics since the university receives the same money either way
-club personnel costs covered by boosters and such and they can fire at will (de facto it's that way now)

It's apparently not that uncommon. Apparently the independent study classes are often set up on the fly by the individual professor that the student is working with and it's entirely the professor's responsibility to actually make sure the student does something.

Of course, that doesn't explain how the hell freshmen were being signed up.

Honestly, it sounds like it's a part of the academic culture at UNC. To them, undergraduate grades just don't seem to matter as long as the student gets their degree in the end. The professors are required to teach X# of undergraduate courses (I guess they don't have enough TAs?) and long ago gave up on actually grading the students based on their performance in the class.

At least that's what she described.

Frankly it sounds like a pretty crappy system designed to get any and all underperforming students out of the university with a degree and no actual knowledge gained, but I can see why the NCAA felt like they could just ignore a system like that. It's more of a BoG issue.

I guess that was just a free grade, though.

But this whole thing isn't all focused on independent study in the first place - many of those fake classes were supposed to be regular lectures.

However. UNC still needs to be punished for gaming the system for at least parts of the last 3 decades.
