That's not bad. It's surprising what some people do with their Porsches. Just today I read about a guy asking what to do, cause he got caught in the rain with his Porsche, how to dry it etc.
In response I say: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh3A1ERsvY4

^so bummed I'm going to miss it this year. I went 2-3 years ago and it's just incredible... What's so hard for some people to understand is that this is from 9,300 to 14,000 feet... naturally aspired engines do not work well as there's just not enough air... it's just remarkable to be able to go that fast at those altitudes!

Watch a Freightliner semi truck race up Mt. Washington
holy shit... isn't he scared of just... umm... SLIDING DOWN THE FUCKING MOUNTAIN???!!!
Quote : | "If you haven't figured it out by now, Mike Ryan is our kind of crazy. The guy helms a 2008 Freightliner Cascadia that's draped in the hallowed Gulf livery and rocking more than 3,400 pound-feet of torque. There's also 1,950 horsepower on hand, which is good enough to shoot the 10,000-pound road tractor up some of the most challenging hill climb events in the world. It does pretty impressive burnouts [http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/01/video-recreating-ken-blocks-gymkhana-in-a-gulf-livery-semi], too. This year, Ryan turned the big chrome grille of his beast toward the finish line of the Mount Washington Climb to the Clouds and he was kind enough to strap a few cameras to his rig on the way up." |

^^^yeah i know about that one. people have gone even faster on more specialized bikes. all that is pretty much retarded. im talking about normal, race condition with normal bikes/helmets..etc. he is not pedaling, not turning and most importantly NOT riding on tires that are less than inch in width. 7/21/2011 4:14:47 AM |
sumfoo1 soup du hier 41043 Posts user info edit post |
to each their own... but the guys your talking about are just going down a hill on the road. when i had my big bike (ellsworth dare) i hit mid 60s all the time...
Matter of fact i almost hit 60 (58) on my hard tail (specialized P.2) @ the downhill course that was destroyed to make the white water park in Charlotte... and that was over a winding rooted crap hole of a course with a bike worth less than 1k.
to each his own but don't even act like going fast on smooth asphalt is more difficult then going fast down un-even terrain that's just effing dumb, i don't care how small your tires are (larger diameter though) 7/21/2011 8:42:38 AM |

Wow! Are you retarded? Guy riding in the video is going down a 25% grade with much more stable bike, HUGE, customized, suspension travel and he is NOT TURNING. Go google a random tour de france stage where riders are descending down a treacherous, NOT STRAIGHT road going 60mph. That's a skill. They are also NOT wearing spiderman costume and ultra aerodynamic helmet.7/22/2011 11:44:27 AM |

lol you act like they're on a slalom or something.
I'm giving you credit but those "tiny tires" hold you up quite well going that fast and those turns are NOT sharp..
Going 60 on my downhill bike (yes it had 6 inches of travel an 2.5" tires which most X country bikes have now) i'd be essentially drifting around turns... the biggest danger to a road bike rider is a car or another road bike... regardless of how fast they're going.
p.s. i had a road bike too and the only thing scary about going 40+ is how much longer it takes a car to go by. Keep your body out of the wind and its pretty damned stable
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMh-cahlv4Y
A road bike rider's skill resides solely in pacing strategy and endurance... trust me... i was on NCSU's bike team and rocked road bike races until big burly legs and balls were no longer enough. (had to participate in both seasons even though i was brought on to fill a gap in downhill racing)

errr...they actually ARE a lot of times in downhill slalom going 60+.

Lets put it in simple terms. Difference in traction between 145 tire on 80s civic is quite different from 335 tire on viper, even if 145 tire is a slick.

Wait, haha you are were drifting a mountain bike at 60mph? You are beyond full of shit.

AGAIN! Missing the point. I am talking about comparing the skill of the video that was posted (mountain bike going 100mph downhill without turning for maybe 1/3mile, vs road bikers going 60+ downhill with turns for 60 miles. APPLES TO ORANGES in terms of skills.7/24/2011 2:03:46 PM |

lol its funny cause you've only experienced half the story, and clearly the half you've read is the better half... it has to be... because its all you've read..
I hate to break it to you but any turn on dirt above 20 mph on a bike ... the bike slides in... making it *like drifting* you drag one foot and keep low and hope to god you don't slide into something that won't give like a root or a rock.
and as tiny as those tires are on a road bike... I've never had one slide or seen one slide by a faster rider (and again i'm not a fast road bike rider by any means but i used to be able to out sprint most) in any situation other then under braking or in the wet.
^^ and i'm sure you did... i've hit a few trees in my day... and the brick wall next to the book store right after you descend the stairs... yeah i hit that going 25mph once and beat up myself and my bike pretty bad.... lol my headset broke and i had no control of my bike after jumping the stair gap.
At the dirt jumps at the old chapel hill trails... i hit the first of them going way too fast once... bailed off the bike and latched on to the nearest tree... looked like some cartoon crap.
and no... i'm not missing the point... all i'm saying is that balls are not required to be a good road biker... ask lance. (ok that one may have been in poor taste) but seriously there is a reason why dentists are always road bikers... because they aren't risk takers.
I've done that on my hard tail too.

i think its over hyped.
essentially he built a chassis that meets all their regulations and has multiple engines to put in it for each... then chassis setup.
Now, my thought is this: if he goes from one event to another and crashes Event A's Car... its now the same car he would have used in Event B. Which means either his spare cars are now spares for all series or he doesn't have any spares at all.
But why is this such a big deal? 7/26/2011 12:52:19 PM |
Prospero All American 11662 Posts user info edit post |
the video said ECU remapping, not engine replacement.
the only thing genius about it, is that it will save time & money, i don't see how it will necessarily make it a better car per say. 7/26/2011 1:13:41 PM |

not genius..rally teams change that much stuff on stage rally cars every time they switch stages/conditions. wheels/tires, shocks, engine tune, brakes...all that stuff can be changed in minutes by the crew. 7/28/2011 9:11:57 AM |
Prospero All American 11662 Posts user info edit post |
did you even watch the video? it clearly states that they change all that stuff. the genius is in the single chassis and single "kit of parts" that a lot of the body can be cross-platform. the obvious stuff they'll change just like they always do. the only question is whether or not a single-platform for 3 different types of racing will be as competitive as a purpose-built car.
