What's going on over there anyway? Is that part of State's campus?

No; it's privately owned (I think Val Valentine may have part or all of it) and they have planned for it a mixed-use development including privately owned student housing (a la UT) and retail.

Yeah info on that project is somewhere in this thread. Looks like exactly what Hillsborough needs (place for students to live on the street)

The university has been buying up property on Hillsborough across from the bell tower, including Sadlack's and Bell Tower Mart. They hope to sell or lease the land to a developer who will build something to make Hillsborough Street more lively. 10 developers have signed up to be the one to develop this spot.

http://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/print-edition/2011/04/15/firms-queue-up-to-land-ncsu-project.html

First, I am concerned that Sadlack's might be lost. It is an institution of Hillsborough Street that must remain. Second, I will be glad to see the rest of that crappy ghetto strip mall come down. Anyone remember the plasma center that used to be on the second floor there?

prepare for a drunken army (the likes of which have never been seen) if they even try to touch Sadlack's

They don't own Sadlacks. "Bell Tower Holdings LLC" owns the POS building next to it. Sadlacks has belonged to R W Schwetz since 9/28/87. That's the older woman who runs the kitchen right?

BTW, a new art collective opened in that little shopping center recently. I haven't checked it out yet.

I wouldn't be so sure of that; Imaps shows Bell Tower Holdings as the owner of everything between Enterprise and Maiden on Hillsborough street.

http://maps.raleighnc.gov/imapsraleigh/

I hope they know better than to try to tear down Sadlack's.

Weird. I looked it up on wake.gov and it told me R W Schwetz, but the map that it links to shows otherwise.

Remember that Bell Tower Holdings is actually the university. Notice that their address is Primrose Hall.

Anyway I hope they tear down everything on that block except Sadlack's and build something big.

The university also has plans to build something on the North Hall parking lot. Looks like a parking garage and something else. It also plans something on the parking lot it owns next to Locopops/Players Retreat. No idea when any of this will happen, but see this image from the current campus master plan:

It looks like the University is stepping up and taking an active role on Hillsborough Street.

I wish they'd spend some money on the stretch just west of Dan Allen.

yeah cruising in from 440 (eastbound on hills) is fucking pathetic.

shitty ass fucking road, shitty buildings (xcept the new renovation on the tractor building)

that stretch doesnt really appeal to the eye if your coming to visit the college, playing a game (@ doak, the track, reynolds, intramural sports & etc), or in passing going downtown

West of Dan Allen, beyond the crumbling sidewalks and pavement, what really makes that part of Hillsborough Street ugly is the power lines. They're huge, tall, and zig zag back and forth all over the place. The poles are crooked and covered with staples from decades of posters being tacked to them.

The next chunk of Hillsborough in line for an overhaul is Rosemary to Gardner. They will do something similar to the part of Hillsborough that has already been rebuilt. Namely, rebuild the sidewalks, repave the street, maybe add a roundabout or two, and - most importantly - bury the power lines. Don't know the timeframe, but it's at the very top of the list of city-funded streetscape projects.

I think the western side of Hboro will get queued up for a facelift once the Stanhope Center is drawing people in. I CANNOT see how they can ignore the state of that side of the street with such a large and valuable project starting.

I don't think they should build anything taller than the bell tower.

And I've never understood why people were so in love with Sadlack's. Or Mitch's for that matter. From the times I've been in both I get the impression they're only surviving because of the old farts who are too enchanted by the name to realize the place sucks now. Disclaimer: I haven't actually eaten food at Sadlack's, it just seemed sketch as hell the few times I had a beer in there. But Mitch's food isn't that great and the service makes me want to choke a bitch.

Been up on Maiden Lane a lot this year and it still has its character with numerous empty houses, crack houses and the like. I've heard rumors of some fraternities that are looking to get a house or get off of Greek Court are looking at renovating some of the larger, but still pretty run down houses before you get to Theta Chi at the end of Maiden.

They do need to knock down the entire complex between Enterprise and Maiden to put something up there. Some kind of nice restaurant/bar place like Top of the Hill in Chapel Hill was discussed in the Technician a few months back. Same goes for the other end of Hillsborough. Once Stanhope goes up they need to bring some new businesses/buildings in to replace the huge losses of the beautiful buildings which once housed Farmhouse, Capital City Comics, etc.

It looks like a Chipotle is going to open up on Hillsborough Street. Though the address that comes up for the site is opposite the Wachovia, so I wonder if it will be opening in the Atrium food court?

^I thought Chipotle was supposed to go in the old Wolf Mart/Gopak Bazaar space. But I could be wrong.

^^^
Don't be too quick to judge Sadlack's. Go there for lunch sometime--they actually have really fucking good sandwiches. Plus it serves a valuable purpose as a place for small up-and-coming bands to play. Yeah, some sketchy folk hang out there, but it's definitely a campus institution that earns its keep on more than just nostalgia. As far as Mitch's, I happen to like the food there too, plus the laid-back atmosphere. And I do appreciate the fact that it's been there for 30+ years and is part of the community and the neighborhood around campus. The service can be spotty, and the last few times I've been in there the service has been downright bad, I agree improvement is needed there.

I'm also with you on the height thing--nothing taller than the Bell Tower would be ideal, at least in its direct sight lines/in such a prominent location.

Sadlacks has awesome food. I deal with the sketchiness to go eat there. Mitch's is even better and if you go there even semi regularly they'll know your name and what you like to drink, which is nice. You're crazy if you don't like the food and the menu changes frequently as do the beers on draught. My grad school profs always go up there at 4pm every day and after any night class there's usually several that migrate over there and stay til close and on the last day of classes our profs will usually take us there for a "party" where they buy appetizers and we buy drinks (as per university policy). Mitch's and Sadlack's are hole in the wall bars but they're traditional bars for the University that have stood the tests of time for years and years. PR is another strong example of this.

If a bar has been operating long enough by State that it has seen us win a national championship, they're doing great in my book.

my aunt (who is also the daytime bartender at Mitch's) was a little late getting to the hospital the day I was born because she had beer to finish at Sadlack's

and that was in 1986

sadcracks-not too bad...good heros, sweet potato fries, prs, and tunes that are agreeable for a half hour or so
mitches-bitches....i get the mexican feast, or the london broil sandwich and overpay for the quality imo, bad service

but i dont frequent hillsboro bars to often. i used to be a daily drinker at the farmhouse RIP.

Katmandu blows, east village not my favorite(i have personal vendetta against), PRs is okay
