On TV: 09/26 - TV On The Radio - Letterman (They were supposed to be on last night but I guess they got bumped or just moved it.) 10/02 - Ben Folds - Conan
Live: Here's an interview with Girl Talk by Popcandy to get everyone ready for the upcoming concert.
Quote : | "Me: Your shows are getting pretty popular. Do you feel the need to take them to an even bigger level?
Gillis: Yeah, to a small degree. For Lollapalooza, I had a couple people onstage in policemen uniforms doing live visuals with toilet paper and confetti. They're going to be coming on tour with me. ... Last time I did a full U.S. tour, I had a guy helping out with visuals -- like actual overhead projections -- so he'll be there as well. For most of the year when I do the weekend (shows), I'm usually alone. I think a lot of people can get into it because of how simplistic and raw the setup is. It's just a guy playing a few computers. So I don't feel any pressure to have a million dollar light show or anything like that, but I'm doing my best to step it up when the shows are getting a little bigger.
How much time do you spend worrying about possible legal action? Because, frankly, I worry about it for you.
You sound like my mom. (Laughs) I mean, it's not something I wake up and think about. I talk to people about my work and my music just about every day, and it's something where leading up to releasing an album, it's on my mind. I believe it should be legal, and I don't think we're technically violating anything because of the fair use doctrine. As the days roll by, you stop stressing about it as much.
How much do you think Feed the Animals is worth to a consumer?
I don't know, I guess that depends on what you make. I really enjoy buying albums, and I come from the world where CDs are worth $10 or $15 typically, so that's what I think it would be worth for a physical product. ... But that's completely different for different people, and I understand that. I think a lot of young kids grow up having no money and are used to having access to the Internet and getting music for free. That's their world, and I don't really think there's a problem with that.
CovergirltalkSo are there any samples that you really wanted to use but couldn't, or do you always find a place for everything?
I'd say the majority of samples I want to use I do not find a place for. I always just sample songs without knowing what I'm going to do with them. On this album there are 300 samples, but going into it I probably sampled 2,000-3,000 songs. So yeah, most of the time I'm working is just failure after failure. ... I really wanted to use samples from the Cars song Drive, which is one of my favorite jams. I've used that in my live show a lot, it just happened to not work with the energy that I wanted in that particular point in the album.
Are you always keeping up with new music, or do you tend to go back and listen to older stuff?
I'd say maybe 75% of my time is spent listening to older music these days. Right now I have a boombox in my bathroom, and every day I wake up and turn on the oldies station and jump in the shower.
What new stuff are you into right now?
The rapper Killer Mike has a new album out right now that I really like. He also has a song with Trina called Look Back at Me that I think is really amazing. Everything I've heard off the new Busta Rhymes album has been great. Of course, the new Lil Wayne album has been exhausted this summer in a great way. It's like, every day I hear something new that I'm really into.
I think it's interesting that a lot of your fans probably don't listen to a lot of pop music. What is it about hearing it in this context that makes it OK?
I think all music is the way you frame it, but this isn't a new idea. It goes back to people who listened to the Rolling Stones in the '60s and '70s and maybe didn't really listen to the traditional blues guitarists they were influenced by or borrowing their style from. Hip-hop has always done it, just sampling from different styles of music and flipping those songs in ways their fanbase didn't typically listen to them. I'm a big fan of everything I sample, but if my fans aren't, I'm definitely not offended by it, because I'm not trying to play these songs. I'm trying to make something new out of them.
I know you're a full-time musician now. Do you miss anything about your day job?
No. (Laughs) I mean, the day job was fine, but I like getting up late, I like going out when I want to go out. Being able to wake up when I want and work on music all day and stay out as late as I want is kind of perfect for me. Sometimes I get in a mode where I feel like I should be reading something a bit more on the academic end, just because I feel like my mind is turning into mush right now.
Are you surprised at how big this has become? Has your success exceeded your expectations?
It's really insane to me. It's hard to put into words, but if you could document my first six years of doing this and traveling around playing to nobody ... there was no precedent. There's definitely people before me who have pioneered this sort of music and (there are) definitely related artists, but as far as someone just getting up there and doing strictly live remix and collage work on a computer, there is no one really before me who took it to this level that the shows are at right now. So yeah, it's absolutely a huge surprise.
So what happens now? How big do you want it to get?
I feel very accomplished by what's happened, and I'm going to continue to ride the wave and see what happens. But rather than see how big it can get, I would rather create music or do a style of performance that creates discussion (or) makes people think about music and performance in a different light. I'm in this position now where a lot of people are listening to what I do, so I can make something pretty far out and maybe change the way people think about music.
Have you ever gotten injured at a show?
Yeah, two Thanksgivings ago, I played a show in Pittsburgh, and my parents came out. My sister was in town for her high school 10-year reunion, and she came out with a bunch of her high school friends. The show was getting kind of crazy, and cords were getting unplugged, and near the end I jumped off the front of the stage. My dad was in the front row, so I actually went over my dad's head and hit my face off of my sister's best friend from high school. I fell to the ground and got up, and my front left tooth was knocked out. My mom was just like, "Agghh! Stop the show!" (Laughs)
It seems like maybe part of your goal is to create the best party of all time.
Yeah, I think part of the inspiration for the shows was, in the early days I was playing shows to very stiff crowds in art galleries, and I always wanted to make it a party. I started to play more house parties while I was in college -- like, there would be a party and there would be a CD on, and I would just play a 20-minute set in the middle of the floor, and it would be nuts. And in my mind, I was like, "Why can't we do this in a show space?" I think that's always something I've wanted to bring to a venue, is just having an insane house party sort of feel. " |
