Oh? I didn't know your reading comprehension deficit was so severe - or your inherent paranoia. Because I certainly don't read any "threats" around here - encouraging you to do us all a favor and off yourself is a prescription, not a threat. But it figures that a bedwetter like you would see terrorist threats everywhere. Shouldn't you be changing your sheets right around now?
And yes. Do bitch and moan to the moderators some more. Why don't we show them what an asshole you've been lately? How you start in with personal attacks? I'm sure that is the kind of behavior worth complaining to the moderators over, right? I mean, you're in such a good position to bitch about personal attacks after starting up with them unprovoked.
...or do the rules just not apply to little paranoid bedwetting fascists like you now? 12/24/2007 8:47:34 PM |

*shrug* OK. Well, it's good for your clarify your wholly unambiguous statement about bullets to heads. Although I have a pretty good reason to question the sanity/motives of anyone who spends Christmas Eve telling people to off themselves on the internet (speaking of paranoid).
But you're right -- I've surely been meaner and nastier than anyone else on TSB. Nobody ever attacks each other personally here. But you know, I wasn't bitching and moaning -- if they want to ban me too, that's fine. Although I feel I should get at least one free racist tirade thread first to match my inherent fascism (just kidding! ). 12/24/2007 9:04:54 PM |

I'm fairly sure the same people who make a habit of repeated unprovoked attacks on other posters (on Christmas Eve, apparently!) also don't make it a point to publicly bitch about others returning fire. That is the mark of a well-adjusted person.
Look, here's an idea. In the spirit of Christmas, if you'd care to actually act like a civil human being, perhaps other people on here can as well. Just a thought. 12/24/2007 9:13:44 PM |

Yes, but I'm Jewish (ok, well, technically). It's either Chinese food or unprovoked attacks on the internet for me. Sigh. But burying the hatchet is fine. TSB grudges don't last anyway, there's always a meaner asshole here (we have the top ranks pegged with salisburyboy and his ilk ).
We probably have more in common politically than you think, but I am very stubborn about the War in Iraq (for intellectual and personal reasons). I am politically libertarian (for the most part) and have volunteered for a "constitutional Republican" campaign before. Personally I don't think Ron Paul represents the "civil libertarian right" well, especially after the Huckabee comments about (ironically) fascism. But I was impressed with his performance debating McCain (further proof that McCain is old as the hills and needs to do something else).
We'll see. I used to be more ideological about politics and I can see how a candidate like Paul is appealing to you. He would've been to me five years ago, but not now -- we'll be lucky just to have a solid Republican majority in this election. If the Democrats win we're heading down a long and dark road, so for me this primary maybe isn't the best start for new political directions (that includes Huckabee). 12/24/2007 9:35:12 PM |

Doc... smoker... take a breath. It's the holiday season, so let's at least try to be civil here. This is one of my favorite threads and I'd rather not see it, like so many others, degrade into name-calling.
Now, smoker, to your original assertions:
Quote : | "I don't like Ron Paul. He's not a Libertarian, he just plays one on TV. " |
Please elaborate on why. Ron Paul has never voted for an unbalanced budget, for any bill encroaching on civil liberties, or any other bill exercising authority beyond those expressly written into the Constitution. He also ran on the Libertarian ticket in 1988, and has an open invitation run on it again by the current Libertarian Party members.
In other words, I call bullshit.
Quote : | "Ron Paul's "constitutionalism" is just cover fire for his total inability to see the forest for the trees. His continuing opposition to the War in Iraq makes him unfit not only to be President, but a congressperson or statesman of any stripe." |
Read his book, A Foreign Policy of Freedom, if you're confused on his war stance. In the book Paul cites the US's constant intervention in the Middle East and the shortcomings of those policies. Today the US faces terrorist threats b/c of the policies which Paul fought against since being elected in 1980.
That at least is the position Ron Paul has always taken regarding foreign policy. If you disagree with his conclusions, fine. Many people will readily agree with you. However, just remember Ron Paul knows more about Middle Eastern politics than you will ever know in your lifetime. He didn't come up with these positions overnight. He settled on them after a lot of thought and experience. I think asserting that he has "tunnel-vision" is at best unintentionally ignorant, because quite honestly his positions make a lot of sense.
To me, his positions make the most sense period.12/25/2007 5:57:18 PM |

Funny stories from today:
My father, a lifelong republican, a NC republican party rep (went to the national convention last year), is now an unofficial Ron Paul supporter. I NEVER thought I'd see the day we would support the same candidate. Been a straight ticket, majority supporter.
My mother, a lifelong democrate, is a pretty vocal Ron Paul supporter. Has NEVER voted for a Republican in any office, ever.
My sister, another democrat, though newly registered, also loves the guy.
I introduced both of them to him back in the fall, and they refused to even let me talk about him around the house, because they thought he must be some nutjob. I get home for christmas and here they are handing me newspaper articles and supporter cards.
All college educated, both my parents are accountants, previously worked FOR the IRS, and have never supported the same candidate for president.
It's really suprised me how many people I've spoken to about Ron Paul, who I never imagined would ACTUALLY support him, but do and do vocally now. Whether because of the hatred for Hillary Clinton, or the disgust of the status quo in Washington, he really is a unifying candidate.

But I do honestly believe that RP's success will surprise the hell out of a whole lot of people.
Worst case, top 2 or 3 in NH, IA, SC and NV, and staying in until the end.

That's pretty much the nature/definition of a grass roots campaign, which is what RP mostly is. It's just individuals, likely with absolutely no ties to RP, putting up signs and stuff. 12/27/2007 1:20:26 AM |

Doubtful. Remember there was still the stock market crash of the early 20's. That in itself would have prevented the divergence of the states. Besides, there IS a need for a federal government. If for nothing more than mail, defense and transportation infrastructure (back in those days anyway), that would have virtually buried any state that would have made any state at the time think of secession. Even today, its entirely farce to think any one state could survive independently of the union.12/27/2007 1:29:34 AM |

You're right, but a weak federal gov. over time would allow states to gradually drift that direction.
Just imagine if RP were prez. and half of the southern states made gay marriage and abortion illegal and repealed affirmative action type laws. Over time, you'd have more liberal minded people drifting out of these states to other states, causing the population to be more unified in their beliefs. Then it would be a situation probably more like Quebec and the rest of Canada, or at worst, Pakistan and India.
A good example of this is Europe, I think. They're all white, often the same basic religion, very strong historical ties to each other, yet each nation is distinct from the other nations, and they like it that way.12/27/2007 1:42:12 AM |
SandSanta All American 22435 Posts user info edit post |
Europe is a terrible example because all those nation's have been independent of each other since....forever.
The example you could use is the UK, where Scotland is slowly drifting out of the Union. 12/27/2007 1:45:42 AM |

Yea but they're kind of doing the opposite of what you're arguing by striving to become a stronger union.
I also don't quite agree that the south would drift further away from the north per se. I think this country, with a weak central government, would see bloc's forming around the most economically powerful states:
CA NY FL TX <random heartland state...honestly who cares about them>
Money always speaks louder the faith. Especially when the mentally challenged who would actually vote a man like RP into office realize that all the free goodies provided to them by Federal funding would cease. As well as their economic protections from being completely bulldozed by wealthier citizens.
