although costner actually managed to show up tonight.

he could have played a little better defense, but he did marginally contribute.

you must be joking. fells and grant were MIA in the second half. No one could get a rebound in the second half, either.

at least they managed to put together 1 whole half. none of the other players bothered showing up for a whole half at a time.

This game was no different than any other game this season, we give up a million wide open looks, and a team made us pay. Div I teams are supposed to be able to hit shots, if Wake had been able to hit 50% of their wide open shots, we'd have lost by double digits just like we did tonight. Our team's collective basketball IQ has to be one of the worst in Div I basketball. There are 12 year olds who understand some basketball concepts our team does not. The bad thing is that this is not a team comprised of guys who embarrass easily as we've seen this season with the numerous shellackings, I see two more beat downs in the next 3 games.

^^What is really bad is next year's team will be less talented than this one....
Grant is gone, Hickson most likely gone, and God forbid Fells leave. Bring in 2 mediocre recruits in Mays and Williams plus Johnny Thomas = talent dropoff there.

Talent doesn't always = better though. On the bright side maybe they will play together better.

LOL at our defense. YES the scores are low because we slow the game down. Do you watch the games? Our defense is hands down worst in the ACC.

Alright so I just watched our game on DVR since I have the flu and I'm bored. A couple of notes:

1) Good effort from Costner tonight. He's almost in playing shape. It only took him 20 games to be ready to contribute to this years team.

2) Hickson is gone after this year, he's solidified his status as a middle tier first round pick. He's the best player to suit up for NC State since Josh Powell.

3) Sidney has an NBA mentality and doesn't think the regular season counts for anything. Why else would he still be playing Horner so many minutes? The guy contributes nothing on offense and is too slow to defend guards yet too small to defend forwards. The classic effort "tweener". Let's find him a nice cozy spot on the bench so we can move forward. Everyone has a role on the team, Sid needs to meet with him off the court and explain the importance of being a practice squad warrior.

4) McCauley is way too hard on himself. This "fierceness" that McCauley decided to play with helped turn him into a solid ACC performer last year. It's also been his downfall this year. That was the worst performance I've ever seen from that kid. He self-destructed on defense (see the opening 4 minutes of the 2nd half) and we never recovered. I like the fact he is aggressive in looking for his shot but the sequence where he forced his shot and complained about the no-call... then falls asleep on the perimeter and lets Gist beat him backdoor for a basket with the foul... that was too much. Then he FINALLY makes a shot in the 2nd half and promptly erases it by screaming for a mysterious foul even though there was no contact. I think the voices in this guys head have made him crazy. Give him some meds before the game please.

5) Marques has some offensive game. He is timid as shit and picks up his dribble 90% of the time he smells a tigershark lurking, but the other 10% of the time he's a threat. If he ever figures out the flow to the game he could be a Crawford type slasher.

6) We're really going to miss Gavin Grant. Next year will probably be a rebuilding year since we're losing our top two offensive threats and don't have anyone good coming in, but I guess you can't be a field of 65 contender every year.

Overall, can't say much bad about tonights performance. We looked pretty good given the circumstances. If McCauley doesn't have his breakdown early in the 2nd half and Fells isn't MIA on offense we could have hung around with a tough team on the road.

Still right on pace for 7-9, seems like everyone was pretty satisfied with that from the outset of the season.

You know, since I was villianized from the get-go for pointing that out.

pretty much on the money

Horner has been worthless this year. I would actually rather see ferg because he may actually be able to somewhat stay in front of someone. Maybe even more Simon Harris. I def don't see where Horner is a better player than Smith either, besides for the 3 point threat that he supposedly is.

I don't see Marques ever being a Crawford style guard though. He just seems way to slow to me, although he has shown the ability to finish pretty well and make some shots. Is he slower than Atsur with the ball though!?

I am actually looking forward to next year. I think Fells and McCauley as seniors will do wonders for us, especially McCauley in terms of leadership. If Hickson leaves, it makes Costner our starting PF again and we know he has the ability to thrive IF he can get his head on straight. A lineup of:

PG Javi
SG Fells
SF Johnny Thomas/CJ Williams
PF Costner
C McCauley

can still be very effective.

Our PG position will still be our weakest but this year's experience will help us next year. Hopefully Mays can come in and provide valuable depth and Degand can make a successfull comeback by ACC time next year. Also I'm hoping Thomas or Williams can overtake Horner for the SF spot since Horner is in no way an ACC caliber player.

Covering my bases here.

Good news State fans.

Last night's game gave me the inclination our team has a chance to put together a run now that Costner has returned.

So I ran some updated careful analysis to see what our chances of making the tournament are.

What I've found is that IF we can get to 8-8 in the ACC and win our first round tournament game we are in the tournament with ~95% certainty. It would take some major rumblings in the rest of the world to keep us out of an at-large selection.

Visual Factors: These are the least important factors, but add window dressing to a bubble candidate

- Getting to 8-8 makes us easier to stomach with a .500 conference record.

- Important 20th overall victory

Selection Committee Details: These are what the committee uses to make tough decisions

- A win over a legit NCAA tournament team (a certainty if we win 4 more conf games)

- Strong play down the stretch with a 5-5 overall record in last ten games vs top notch competition

- Late season Road wins

However, the number one influencing factor is our fabolous RPI.

- If we get to 8-8 with a tourney win then subsequent loss to Duke/UNC in round 2 we are ranked top THIRTY in the RPI (M.E. +/- 2)

- If we get to 8-8 with a tourney win then subsequent loss to CU/MD in round 2 we are ranked top THIRTY FIVE in the RPI (M.E. +/- 2)

The committee simply can not leave out a .500 ACC team with 20 overall wins that is ranked top 35 in the RPI. They have unwritten rules that they can't break because they don't want their schools getting left out in subsequent years. There is too much money at stake to snub a deserving candidate.

Basically the season is a best of seven game series for us. If we win the series (4-3) we are playing our way into March if we can beat an ACC bottom feeder on a neutral court first round.

Not necessarily...

if we win four, they'd most likely be BC, FSU, Wake, and UVA. None of them are going to the tournament without some serious improvement (and a loss to us certainly couldn't help them).

why do some of you think fells didn't show up for the second half? he didn't score in the first half and had 14 in the second... without fells in the second half, we would have been beaten by 20

Because he scored all his points at the end of the game when the outcome was no longer in doubt? It's called garbage time for a reason.

meh... 2 of his 4 3's were before the 1/2way point (the second at 11:29 to put State only down by 7 - hardly garbage time)... overall though, i feel like Fells showed up in the 2nd half (not just pts)...

p.s. - the game was hardly out of reach until appox 4-5 min to go (regardless of the pt margin)

There should be a clause in Sidney's contract that if he plays Ferguson coming out of the under 16 timeout of the first half he should be immediately fired...

He's certainly done the worst possible coaching job he could have this year. The only way this team has improved over the year is javi gonzales going from terrible to serviceable.

Seriously Sid, last year the excuse was not enough bodies to play tough defense for 40 minutes. What's the excuse this year, for not playing tough defense for even 5 minutes? Giving this guy a 6 year contract was the biggest mistake we ever made. He doesn't coach with any urgency and the players reflect that in their play.

Out coached once again tonight. How many career games have players had against us this year? Paulus, McClinton, Rice, Grevis (15 assists!), Gist, and now Rice. Seriously WTF???

Also how many embarrassing losses is this now? UNO, ECU, MSU, UNC, Duke, Clempson, Maryland, and BC. Honestly each one of these games was embarrassing in one way or another.

At least UVA is losing with some fucking effort, we just give the fuck up.

i haven't had my mind blown like this since herb's team lost to the worst team in the acc in wake forest back to back in the regular season then in the first round of the acc tourney

our ncaa hopes are on the line and we play like this. and sid coaches like this?

and the thing is....we say that sid "gets it." he understands the rivalries, the passion and pride that comes with wearing the uniform. we know how much he wants to win. so that makes me want to think that he isn't just playing favorites with brandon costner. that he wouldn't let crap like that get in the way of winning.

so my question is....is he really thaaaat stupid to think that we are a better team with brandon costner playing twice as many minutes as mccauley? when arguably our best game of the season was played against virginia tech and without costner at all? when its clear to everyoooone (Except that noob simon or whoever on here) that we are a better team with mccauley on the floor over costner? and this is a serious question....because a coach that stupid doesn't deserve his salary, will never make it here, and should be fired immediately.

my only other guess is that he thinks its worth risking these games to let "costner find his shot."
