Got a call two weeks ago from a corporate recruiter, and have since been through 2 phone interviews, a personal interview, and another phone interview.

Last one was Tuesday morning, and I haven't heard back from them yet.

So for my last four or five interviews, I've felt like I was over-prepared for the interview, and I still didn't get the position (and sometimes not even a second interview). I have a [first] interview tomorrow morning and instead of the usual 3-4 hours of preparation, I'm giving myself an hour to an hour and a half. good idea? we'll see.

I just lost my job last Thursday. Nothing spectacular, but it helped out considering I run my own business and theres so much upfront cost in it for the first few years until I get everything running smooth. I was only making $7 an hr at this other job (nope, not even minimum wage), but 40-50 hrs a week was pretty simple considering I could do whatever I wanted during that time, including other part time jobs online and sewing which put $500 or more a month in my pocket. The bad part of this is that I live in Roxboro, which just made TIME magazine due to it's unemployment woes.

I'm doing OK now I guess, but I realize I probably permanently ruined my fiancee's career by taking this job and moving.

9 months, $600 in licenses fees (for 3 states), hundreds of applications (many of which are rejected immediately even when she meets all requirements), several interviews, daily crying sessions, and nothing to show for it.

And all anyone can tell her is that it should be easy and there's a shortage for nurses. fol

Ergh, almost three months (end of the month). Been on three interviews in three months, fail. Had one this week that actually looked possibly promising, but of course, the job description had two design tasks listed, one of which I have experience with and the other, not really. It was worded where it sounded like 50/50 of the two tasks. Once I sat down to the interview, she made it clear that they were looking more for the design stuff I didn't have experience with (of course). Ugh.

And no unemployment benefits possible. Le sigh.

Do any of you have numbers on how many interviews you get back per resume submission and how many offers per interview? I've had the same job for a touch over three years but I send resumes out fairly frequently to see what's out there.

Here's some stats:
I was laid off May 14th. Since June 4th, I have tried to keep a record of my job search and have applied for/sent resumes for 36 jobs. Of those, I have had 2 phone screens and 1 in-person interview. I guess that means I get an interview 8.3333% of the time or 1 out of 12 jobs applied for. Btw, I have a BSME and almost 2 years experience being an engineering technician.

I mean, the market in Raleigh isn't great.

It's the reason why I live in Virginia now. I got a crappy offer from a guy who was just trying to lowball the shit out of me (and I would've hated myself every single day that I worked there after all that). I make 50% more than he offered now working on ridiculously awesome shit with some people who are either fucking with me or acting like my proper boss.

So yeah, I'm happy I moved and I'm fairly glad that I'm not in Raleigh, though my entire family is there right now and I kinda miss that. I've still got good people around here to hang out with.

I had to move out of state also. It kinda sucks, been here 2 years come the end of October. All my family is in NC. My brother just got married though and he I think lives about a hr away. We arent that close at all so I dont see myself hanging out with him. Although, my new sister-in-law's cousins I think would be a blast to hang out with, they know how to party.

The first stages of some interviews are just getting to know you. The later stages will always be technical, but how technical and what kinds of technical questions vary a lot. Sometimes it's just more practical, like have you worked with X? What is something you did with X? Other times it's much, much more theoretical where you would have had to come out of your foundation classes with an A and really know it forwards and backwards.

Figure out what books are considered to be really important works in your field, and make sure you know the material front to back.

This is my second interview and Im not even sure if they are going to ask technical stuff, but they said to expect spending 3 hours there, so Im thinking that is what will happen. Pretty confident I can answer the questions clearly and concisely, but Im worried Im not going to remember stuff.

The interview for my current company wasn't technical but the interview for the last company was very technical and there was only one interview.

My entry level interview included a written test. It was 10 pages long.

Really it was the interview that they cared most about. The test was just to see where I'd need training and get an idea of how long it would take to get me to be up and running. It also means don't let them catch you in some bullshit during the interview that's going to be revealed when you don't have an answer on the tech side.

I found this to be the most frustrating part of being unemployed. But after 4 in person interviews and 2 telephone screen outs I will be coming off of this list 5 months to the day after graduating from grad school. Not an ideal salary or location, but at least I can finally start my career.

^^ Apply to one of them and be sure to state on your resume what you are most interested in. If possible, send a cover letter stating your interests in all the jobs. If they like your resume, they'll interview you and decide the best fit.

depends on the company - if its big enough, you should definitely apply to all the positions. I know a number of companies in which the hiring manager is only allowed to browse the applications for the job posting that he himself posted (ostensibly to keep managers from poaching recruits from other depts.)

So I've been interviewing for this job for the past 5 weeks. So far the process has been:

A phone interview with an internal recruiter
A phone interview with my potential boss
An personal interview with my potential boss/tour of the office
A phone interview with the VP of North America Sales
A phone interview with the VP of Sales and Marketing
A 2hr online personality test

Can anyone think of any other possible steps or should I feel good about this? Maybe they'll want a picture of me in a zebra costume next?

Sometimes companies are required to put a handful of candidates through the entire process, even when they already have their candidate picked out, to protect themselves. However, I'd be willing to bet that you are their candidate. Good luck!
