Safe to assume a rooted droid can flash the OTA update and not lose root correct? I have not seen that spelled out anywhere yet. Curious if developers will be able to do anything they could not previously with this OTA update...

how to manually update your droid to 2.1 (link from P below)

my wife and i got our droids and it's been really tuff going so far adjustment-wise.

-i hate not being able to touch the screen and turn it on- i'm cool with the slide to unlock, but hitting the physical button on top is cumbersome.

-facebook sync doesn't seem to work right with some contacts and just infuriates me

-my wife went through and transfered all her contacts only to have them disappear

-i wish i could delete superfluous apps/ringtones i don't use. time to root soon.

just oddities i have to learn how to manage- i WANT to like this phone more

nothing

1 - not sure if it works for the droid, but the nexus wakes up the same way... I rooted to fix this "issue" but I know there are apps in the market that let you designate a button to wake up the phone. I don't use these options so I do not know the name of the app or if it requires root, you may want to search for that.

2 - odd, no issue with our FB sync... have you checked your data sync to make sure its all correct?

3 - how did she transfer... they would have synced with her gmail, so I don't see how they would not be there. You sure you just done have them hidden in the contacts? Menu display options in contacts.

4 - there really is no reason to NOT root except a warranty (but you can always go back to stock, so...)

If you do not love the phone... you are doing something wrong is what I am saying

make sure their name in your google contacts is exactly like their facebook name, otherwise you'll have problems. Also you can tell facebook to sync all contacts and then go into one of your google contacts and manually join the ones that aren't working. Then go back and set it to only sync existing contacts.

Pinch to zoom in the browser makes me very happy. The active wallpapers are kinda cool. Other than that, meh.

Gonna have to root it soon to enable wifi tethering though.

lol. You could've had those features a while ago. And you'll probably either have to wait until they find an easy way to root it or install the rooted 2.1 as a whole. http://alldroid.org/threads/16669-ESE81-Completely-Stock-With-Proper-Root-SU-amp-Baseband

I downloaded the zip file to my download directory. How do I move it to the root? I have ASTRO file manager but I can't figure it out.

EDIT: Figured it out

a few annoyances with the browser:

-on some slowly loading pages, the browser will randomly scroll to the very top of the page every 5-10 seconds. super frustrating while trying to read something

-links are sooooo fucking hard to click on for me. It would be okay if I could hit the stop button before the wrong page loads. But instead I'm given the favorites button for a few seconds..... then when the stop button appears, I hit it.... woops, too late! Even though it was still on the original page, the instant I hit the stop button it jumps to the next page (which is of course blank because it has yet to finish loading). Now I have to request the page I was just on (why not cache it?) and try clicking on that link again.....

the wifi seems slower often than the 3G to me...

also, is there a way to enable multitouch?

and I vaguely recall a while back reading that you could dictate any text field, is this true?

this is all in the 2.1 update. pinch to zoom in browser and gallery; and all text entry fields have a dictate button on the onscreen keyboard.

After a couple days with the Droid (upgraded to 2.1, I might add) I'm a little disappointed:

Scrolling speed is sometimes slow/laggy and even unresponsive, takes several swipes to get through a menu or down a webpage, and sometimes it flies back to the top or bottom despite a slow swipe. Also weird things like the fact that you can't configure the swipe to put the phone on vibrate mode (it always deselects my choice to vibrate when i switch from sound on to off). And silent mode isn't silent - sure I realize I want the alarm to go off when it's silent, but all the apps are full volume unless I manually turn the media volume down to zero).

Facebook for android is utter shit compared to the iPhone version. No chat. I never get notifications of wall posts, comments, photos tagged, events, etc like I would on the iPhone. There's not even a way to look at most of that stuff in the app itself, anyway. Have to do most of it via the browser.

The phone itself is awkward to handle. The power button is so recessed it's almost impossible to hit. I'm always hitting the search button when i have it in my right hand and try to hit the power button with my index finger. Also hit the volume rocker keys a bunch. Some of this is just being new to it, I'm sure. But they should have made the common button (i.e. power/lock) more prominent and made the less common button (i.e. volume, camera) recessed. And this is just personal preference but I don't need and definitely don't like the hardware keyboard...so the slider mechanism just annoys me.

Otherwise, emails and call quality are great (although it would be nice to have some kind of badge on the homescreen icons to let you know you have new mail/missed calls...if you somehow cleared the notification area before reading everything). Battery life is better than expected. And there are probably tons of different things I can do with this device that I haven't had time for/though of yet...so we'll see.

i have to say ya'll complain about the smallest things. the Droid being my first smartphone, yes it took me about a week or two to fully adjust, but now it's just habit. like holding the phone in the middle, holding it with one hand and turning it on, typing with one hand (thanks to Swype), how to hold the phone so the proximity sensor works so i don't accidentally hit buttons, all are now just second-nature. it's not bad design, no it's not perfect, but just different than what you're used to, hence takes some getting used to.

$200. Looks like they're selling for 250-300 on ebay. It's 79.99 on a 2 yr contract at verizon.

Seriously, don't get a Droid Eris. I tried it out for a couple of weeks instead of my iPhone 3g. The thing is waaaaay too underpowered to do anything useful. After a week of using it my 3g seemed to be ridiculously fast. Just wait a couple of weeks until the Incredible or Nexus One come out for Verizon.

its because he is coming from using an iphone, where he is inherently already looking for flaws. i guess he is expecting the same phone as the iphone, but somehow 'better'

Got bored and installed the Alpha build of the Desire port. Love the new SenseUI but it's buggy as hell. No wireless or USB tethering. You have to turn off the data network in order to make or receive calls which sucks so you pretty much have to use wifi. Wifi is iffy though since it seems to hang every time I try to turn it off and have to reboot in order to connect again. Also seems that there are issues with the market not showing some of your purchased apps. I couldn't download the license file for Touchdown or the full version of Documents to go. It runs pretty smooth though and will definitely be worth taking a look at when they get the kinks worked out.

that of course depends on the speed of the wifi connection and the local speed of your 3G. In my house I get 9 MB/s wifi connection and ~2.8 MB/s 3G (by the end of the year that will be 7.2 MB/s 3G )

I'm having trouble sending emails. I tried sending an attachment to my wife from my gmail to her gmail. No go- it claims to have sent it but it doesn't get to her. I try sending a regular test email and same thing. She sent me one just fine, but when I reply to it it still doesn't send. Any ideas?
