Norv is prolly coming back in 2011. I hope he's fired, but AJ Smith likes him. AJ prefers his coaches to be submissive, weak and effeminate, not aggressive, fiery or strong-willed. Norv can cry and wilt with the best of em. If the Chargers want a real head coach, they are gonna have to fire AJ.
The team will move to LA in 2012. Around that time they'll probably get a big name head coach, as well. 12/27/2010 5:02:19 PM |

So, they officially finished the season with the #1 offense and the #1 defense, yet missed the playoffs.

I found this interesting blurb also
Quote : | "The Chargers are the 5th team in since the merger to lead the NFL in total offense and defense Week 12 or later. 2 of the previous 4 won the Super Bowl but none lost more than 2 games in the regular season." |

Fucking amazing that this team did not make the playoffs. Surely they'll at least fire the special teams coach for this wasted season. Someone needs to be held accountable if Norv is being retained. Hopefully they'll be able to keep Rivera this offseason.1/3/2011 12:39:46 PM |

Slave Famous Become Wrath 34079 Posts user info edit post |
Also, I always thought using yards as the official ranking of offenses and defenses was silly. It should be points, as thats all that matters. And the Chargers finished 2nd and 10th, offensively and defensively. 1/3/2011 12:42:42 PM |
AndyMac All American 31922 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah they were 3rd in fumbles lost also. So that was a big problem too, none of their RB's can hold onto the ball. Fumbles cost them the Patriots game, special teams lost them the Raiders, Seahawks, and Chiefs games. All 4 of those games were absolutely dominated by the Chargers but were given away on miscues.
Other than someone having to take the blame for Special teams (Steve Crosby as ST coach, Norv as head coach supposedly being responsible for everything that happens, AJ Smith for not having good personnel) I think Norv did a good job this year. He did have that offense rolling despite having nobodies in as receivers and constant injuries to skill players.

I guess you could call them extremely unlucky, and the fact is this team would probably beat KC on a neutral field 7 or 8 times out of 10. But the fact remains, that they only won half their games, got swept by the Raiders, and laid a huge egg in Cincy in a game they absolutely had to have. The GM did his job...talent wise, this is a top 5 team. Its the players and coaches fault for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, time and time again. 1/3/2011 12:50:22 PM |

I did not see the game but heard special teams almost fumbled the game for the chargers by allowing a KR for a TD and a on-side recovery. The chargers must have the record for most special teams touchdowns allowed in a single season.

Week 3 Seahawks: 2 KR for TD giving the Seahawks 20-27 victory.
Week 5 Raiders: 2 Punts Blocked. First punt blocked for a safety, Raiders than scored a FG on the possession following the free kick. Second punt blocked and recovered for a TD. Raiders win 27-35.
Week 6 Rams: Missed 40 yd FG and some generous returns allowed during punts to set St. Louis up. St. Louis wins 17-20. Week 7 Patriots: ST false started pushing a 45 yd FG attempt into a Missed 50 yard FG attempt, which would have tied game. While stupid turnover blunders were the reason for the team to be behind, a competent kicker needs to make the clutch field goal not to mention not getting a stupid penalty to push the back-up kicker 5 yards further. ST also was VERY generous with letting the Pats start in good field position Charger 40 yd mark or better on several of the KickOff's.

Maybe, but I remember in week 7 they had more punts blocked than the entire rest of the league combined.

Slave Famous, please help me understand your top five talent comment. I consistently hear this from the media as well, but outside of quarterback, tightend, and maybe Vincent jackson--i don't see any other players who I would consider a top 5 or even top 10 player in the NFL. 1/3/2011 2:57:01 PM |

Their offensive line is pretty damn solid. Marcus McNeil is probably one of the best offensive lineman in the league.
Their defense is just solid all around. Philips is a great linebacker, Quentin Jammer use to be one of the best corners in the league and even though he has slowly declined the last year or two, it hasn't been by much. Antoine Cason is good...Weddle is not extremely athletic, but he's a very good tackler and decent safety.
I think Darren Sproles was one of the more dangerous skill players in the league a couple years ago, but teams seem to be able to contain him easily now...although he's still a threat to break big plays.
Gates is pretty much the top TE in the game and Vincent Jackson is one of the best deep threats in the game. That's pretty big right there. And their other wide receivers have a lot of the "measurables", so I think that's why everyone says that the "talent" is there, although it might be a little more "potential" than "talent."
Add all of that to one of the top 5 QBs in the game and you see why everyone thinks it's an extremely talented team. 1/3/2011 3:46:31 PM |

On a neutral field in a one game playoff, I'd take San Diego over everyone but New England, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and New Orleans. They'd have a good chance to shit themselves like they did all year, but they'd have an equally good chance to beat anyone but those four teams, with maybe Atlanta and Philadelphia thrown in as well. 1/3/2011 4:38:37 PM |

Guy who does a lot of stats on a Chargers board posted this:
Quote : | "Our #1 ranked D only gave up 269 points. That could have ranked us 3rd in that category, but our opponents managed another 53 points while our D was on the sideline. That means almost one of every six points scored against us happened while our #1 defense was resting.
We allowed:
2 punt return TDs (one off a block) 3 kick off return TDs 2 fumble return TDs 2 safeties on punt blocks
We out-gained our opponents by almost 2,000 yards (1,984 to be exact), that's 124 yards per game. 1,674 of those yards came in the passing game, meaning we out-gained our opponents by 104.6 ypg in the air. We had 110 more 1st downs than our opponents. The 247 1st downs we allowed were the fewest in the league. Only the Giants allowed fewer 3rd down conversions.
We squandered alot this season by not being able to hold onto the ball, and with our historically crappy ST play.
We singlehandedly proved that Special Teams play is just as important as offense or defense.
With even average special teams play we probably would have won the first games against both the Chiefs and Raiders, and the Seattle game, meaning we could have finished 12-4." |
