^^ just pointing out they both have traditionally competed on the national stage and have enjoyed a great deal of exposure and success. Many people, I believe, would credit that those years of success as a program would make recruiting a lot easier, as well as establishing (as pointed out) a culture of winning and excellence. We do not have that leisure was my point. Mainly centered around the athleticism of said teams athletes year in and year out.

the game was lost on a handful of big plays, a few stupid mistakes, and a bunch of dumb penalties.

I'm not wanting TOB fired for losing this game. I want him fired because he won't fire the worst defensive coordinator in the history of organized football. Mike Archer couldn't stop a corpse from getting out of a coffin. We've had the EXACT same defensive problems for the last six years, and the problem is CLEARLY the bullshit defensive schemes that this mental midget puts out there. TOB won't fire Mike Archer, so the only way to get rid of our DC is to fire the coach so that the rest of the staff goes.

About the only thing I could see blaming Archer for in this game is not demanding that Amerson sit his ass on the bench the entire second half for giving up on plays constantly.

Archer just needs to bench our all american CB. Seriously, how can one player get burned so much? Other teams are now targeting Amerson.

Maybe this is a good thing - his draft stock will drop so much that he'll have to come back next year and he'll actually play defense again.

[Edited on October 1, 2012 at 12:13 PM. Reason : ^Beat me to it.]

I'm fairly certain Amerson was off the field for the series after he quit on the offsides play that ended up a TD.

yeah, we certainly shouldn't blame Archer for his vaunted 10-yard cushion and his even more hailed "prevent" defense

I thought overall the D looked pretty good. We stuffed the run well and had players in coverage in the right place to make plays. Of course none of that matters when players give up (or easy knock-downs bounce off of a helmet and turn into a TD, or your offense turns the ball over 6 times). This D looks nothing like the D from 2-3 years ago with big WR cushions, giving up the underneath all day, no tackling, etc etc.

yeah, the defense didn't look too bad and made some big stops. just too many offsides and the DBs getting beat on several big plays (a lot on amerson)

Yeah, the constant offsides is really uncharacteristic and fucked us a lot. I'm still amazed that with as much as State fucked up in that game they still had a real opportunity to win.

Also, maybe this was mentioned before, but there was some chucklefuck in the stands with a whistle, and maybe he was just near a mic or something, but I seriously thought plays had been called dead a half dozen times at least based on this one guy's whistle.

I didn't follow him too closely last year, but was Amerson really an amazing defensive player, or did he just get a lot of INT's. Outside of those, I didn't hear much else about his defensive capabilities.

Just curious.

i'm pretty sure he's been burned on more touchdowns so far this year than all of last year (speculation)

Amerson made some absolutely breathtaking INTs last year. He basically beat Louisville by himself with his two picks; one of which he returned for a TD. He has great ball skills and athleticism, but his length is what sets him apart. He can go up and over most WRs to get the ball.

His biggest problem this year is that he's being way too aggressive looking for INTs. He probably put a lot of pressure on himself to match his INT numbers from last year and cement his top-10 draft pick status. Because of that, it seems he's biting on almost every double-move, pump-fake, etc and other teams have noticed.

He's still a star IMO. Just needs to check back in mentally and get his swagger back.

I wouldn't say the defense looked good. We had multiple plays where guys came up to make a hit and failed to wrap up which let the play go on for extra yardage. Our corners and safeties let way too many guys get behind them and it happened often. Throw in the obscene number of offside calls, none of which hurt more than the Amerson call that converted a field goal attempt into a first down that led to a Miami TD. It just wasn't a good day. Even when we had guys covered, we did things like let a possible pick 6 go through the hands, hit Bishop in the face and bounce to a WR for a TD.

I was keeping a running count during the game and we just gave away way too many points and still had a chance to win. This isn't a good team we lost to.

2 - Snap over Glennon's head for a safety
7 - Entire defense stops on the flag instead of playing to the whistle resulting in an easy TD
4-7 - Amerson jumps offside on a field goal attempt. Results in a drive saving first down and later TD
3-7 - Palmer fumbles at the 1 yard line
1 - Sade misses an extra point
7 - Bishop has both hands and then his helmet on what should have been an easy interception. Ball gets through for a TD catch.

That's just going off the top of my head and it accounts for 24-31 points difference. It only takes one of our turnovers into account. True Miami could say they missed 3 FGs and threw an interception in the endzone, but it doesn't offset what we let get away. It comes down to us just failing to execute on a regular basis.

Amerson's INT strength is being able to jump higher than the people around him. Many of last year's INTs came from out jumping a crowd, or jumping in front of a quick pass. He wasn't tested a whole lot with 1-on-1 go routes last year, but that seems to be his Achilles Heel this year. Does he lack top speed? Idk, but I put it on the defensive coach to already know this, and put the players in the right place with the right schemes.

I saw a comment about this earlier, and I thought it was a little funny; the only time we saw Amerson put his hands up when he was getting bombs thrown over his head, was after the touchdown while looking around for what went wrong.

True. Amerson is still one hell of a talent. Again, I put the blame on the coaches for putting Amerson in one on one situations he is not ready to handle. Amerson Island doesn't really exist right now. He is not able to be a lock down corner when playing good WRs just yet. Maybe when he comes back next year he will be more prepared for that type of role.

so amerson sucking could be good news, if that means he comes back next year... and is improved... ?

Not saying Amerson sucks, he is just not ready to take on the role that is being asked of him. Maybe with another year developing his skill set, he will be. I hear that some players actually get better with more time and practice, but that is just a theory.

I get what you're trying to say - he made some big plays. But I still feel like it's such a slam on the offense. They did score 24 points after all.

I feel like the shitty tackling in this game has not been mentioned enough. It's just appalling to see this with upper classmen. Wrap a mother fucker up. Goddamn.

Haha...welp, I guess when only 20 fans show up to a game, one person's whistle is probably very audible on the field.

Yeah, it was hyperbole. Amerson definitely sealed the game, but Audie Cole helped out. He went into beast mode those last few minutes. Glennon and TJ had great games too.

I think some credit has to go to the Miami running back. Wolff is a really good tackler and he got run over a couple of times.

That game was the hottest I've ever been in my life. The high temperature and humidity numbers both seem extremely low. Saw tons of people being led out of the stadium on stretchers by EMTs.

Their place holder got pushed forward by an o-lineman against a single corner. Granted our DT completely whiffed on the play

that FG fake should have never worked. Johnson hit him high but didn't do anything, which allowed the holder to keep driving forward a few extra yards and he dragged Johnson behind him.

Didn't we force another 4th down on that drive and they missed the FG? Or was that the drive we picked them off in the end zone? Either way the fake FG resulted in 0 points, I think.

But y'all are right. It shouldn't have worked at all. We hit the fucking place holder behind the LOS and he still picked up the 1st down.
