There's an Archie thread. And at this point, there is no good reason to fire Gott for him.

I swear, our fanbase has no understanding of realistic expectations or what it takes to build a program.

2 national titles, the most recent one now 30+ years in the past doesn't mean shit right now, and it's time we came to grips with that. University of San Francisco fans don't act like this and they have just as many titles as we do.

We aren't entitled to anything and firing a coach who has been a solid recruiter and has taken us to the tourney in each of his first 3 years already would just be adding to our storied history of piss poor decision making.

Even UCLA fans don't bitch this much.

you a member of any UCLA fan forums? I bet $ that they bitch as much if not more than State fans.

Oh, they've also made a couple final 4's in the past decade.

And your San Francisco comparison is terrible. They're in the WCC and their last national title was in the mid 1950's...20 years before our first and 30 years before our last. They haven't been even remotely relevant since the 1970's. They've made 1 NCAA tournament appearance since we last won our National Title.

Also, entitlement has absolutely nothing to do with it. Seeing the EXACT SAME ISSUES in year 4 as we saw in year 1 on a team with completely different players, with a coach that has no idea how to fix them has everything to do with it.

Look buddy, my point with the San Fran comparison is that our history is just as irrelevant as theirs is, especially when it comes to recruiting and national prominence. Three solid decades of mediocrity have made all of our history look like something that happened at another university. 30 years since your last relevant moment vs. 50 years since your last relevant moment makes very little difference.

In terms of national prominence we're on the same level as teams like Arkansas or Washington. We're just another big public university occupying the middle of a power conference. Not really sure why our fans and alumni can't grasp that. Until we actually have a deep run, win a conference title, or have a top 10 type season it's not going to change.

The only question that matters is this one: Is Mark Gottfried a good enough coach and recruiter to give us the opportunity to do that? Unless the answer is emphatically no you don't shitcan him. Herb was a decent coach, but it was apparent to anybody who bothered to watch our team that he was never going to move us past the point we were at with the Hodge teams. We then took a massive step back by hiring Sydney Lowe and now we're almost back to the point we were at at the end of the Sendek era.

Just a point of clarification.

We never hired Sydney Lowe, my dog, pictured here: to coach NC State Basketball. She would never have accepted the offer, unless there was bacon grease involved. Lee would not have offered bacon grease.

We did hire a guy named Sidney Lowe, a legend as a college player, a pretty good NBA assistant, and a terrible college basketball coach.

You should ask him. Call him out for not prepping for the UVA game. Tell him we better win with his clear nonchalant attitude towards pre-game preparation.

he's made an elite 8, singular, not plural. and you know the ncaa tournament is a huge crapshoot where teams can get super fucking lucky and over perform for a couple games, right? or do you think george mason was actually one of the best teams in america in 2006? or vcu in 2011?

he has an 18-5 record in a mickey mouse conference and has no significant wins. shut the fuck up.

i was going to mention the year kent state made an elite 8 in a "yeah there's flukes like stan heath now and then but most coaches that take crap mid majors far in the tournament end up pretty good"

then i remembered the only reason kent state made it to the elite 8 was because they beat a mark gottfried coached 2 seed by double digits

i'm not saying he doesn't get credit for it, but he did it once, and it's certainly possible that he may never do it again. and gott may never take us to another sweet 16. we did exactly what i was talking about in my last post - we got real lucky and beat some teams we'd probably have lost to 9 times out of 10. i think we were 1 possession away from making the elite 8 ourselves that year. we didn't exactly set the world on fire the next year, but that team may have just been a flash in the pan and never actually had the potential everyone thought they'd have in 2012-2013.

Yep, a lot on unrealistic expectations 2012-2013. The media hype was unreal yet no one from that team made a NBA roster which showed that they weren't as good as advertised.

This win sets us up very nicely. Alright here we go.

We go 4-1 in our last 5 games. Syracuse, Clemson, Miami, and Florida State have tough schedules left and drop well below us. Pitt can only hope to get 5 wins out of their last 7 which would still leave them tied with us and drop below in the seeding from head-to-head. That leaves us with the 6 seed.

We play the last game on Wednesday night in Greensboro against the 11/14 seed who played a game on Wednesday, and we easily win. That sets us up to play the 3 seed in the last game on Thursday night against which could be any one of ND/Duke/Lville/UNC, all of which we know we have a chance against. A win there would put us way over the top but I don't think it's necessary.

I really don't think the selection committee leaves out a team with wins vs. Duke and @ Louisville, the #4 SOS, 10-8 and 6th place in the ACC, and ending the season winning at least 6 of their last 8 games.

So while months ago I said we would get 11 ACC wins and be easily in the tournament, I think 10 wins still gets us in. Go Pack!

^seems about right. certainly possible. i think that'd put us on the right side of the bubble. but...we're still the same team that got man handled by clemson and wake....so taking care of business is gonna be easier said than done. gott's definitely proven that he can get his teams playing their best ball toward the end of the season - which has me somewhat optimistic.

Yeah, I meant to refer to the guys that graduated or elected to go in the draft. I.e, Leslie, Brown, Wood, Howell. Brown currently got a limited contract, not a full time contract. The way we were hyped up to win the ACC and do all those wonderful things can be seen as media hype in hindsight.

Most likely gonna finish 9-9 in ACC. Must win 1 game in tournament and we'll be dancing. If we miss the tournament with this team it would be a huge disappointment.

Based on the expectation that we go to the NCAA every year. At least for me I don't just hope for a ticket to the big dance, I expect it. Especially in a year where there are so many winnable conference games because the conference isn't that deep with talent. It's not like football where I expect half of the years to be down years and we barely scrape together a bowl-eligible season.

as an overall expectation, i believe that is reasonable. we should reasonably expect to make the tourney most years. that's not over ambitious at all.

that said, we were literally the last team selected to the make the tournament last year (which was widely considered a good season by fans, right?). and in the offseason our best player and ACC POY goes pro. i was under the impression most people expected us to probably be on the bubble again this season...based on youth and losing warren.

so, yes. as an overall, year to year expectation - i think you are right. we can/should be in the conversation to make the field of 68 year in and year out. but looking at this season in particular, i don't see it as a grand failure if we don't make it.

^^agree, well said.

Lacey has done alot to help in replacing TJW - and Cat's late season surge may even put us over the mark from last year's team in terms of high end potential. But any logical fan knew that TJW / ACC POY was pretty much irreplaceable. Turner, Washington, Anya, Lee, Freeman et al. are still the same players they were on last year's team. Clearly huge things may yet come from the Martin twins and Abu going forward, but they are still too young and unpredictable this year.

i was expecting to see bigger leap forward by our big men this season, which has been somewhat disappointing. i think you're right...with lee and turner, this far into their careers, we kinda knew what we had with them.

washington and anya are much better than they were last year. Anya could not stay in for nearly as long and did not have as much of an impact on the game, and washington has come through big in some games in scoring for us. Last year, both guys were just expected to hold their own defensively and get rebounds.

just because they aren't all acc caliber doesn't mean they haven't improved. some of you need to temper your expectations.

yes they've improved. i expected our front court to be more of a strength this year offensively than it is. i didn't mean that those guys haven't gotten better at all. but beejay and freeman have almost no offensive production outside of put backs.
