oh, don't get me wrong, it was past time for Herb to go, mainly because of our fan apathy.
but, god damn, i would love an NCAA tourney now. make the NCAA's and sid can stay as long as he likes. (i don't give a shit how he gets it done.) 1/19/2011 12:39:34 PM |

he just wasn't exciting. you knew he'd make the tournament, and you knew he wouldn't really do much in it. bleh.
now i'm on the edge of my seat as to whether or not we'll be in the game. it's very much improved on an excitement level. 1/19/2011 12:40:39 PM |

i really don't see how people think sidney lowe's teams are less boring than herb sendek's. up until this year, the entire offense has been "everybody stand around, pass the ball to tracy smith (or hickson). if that doesn't work, throw up a desparation 3."
i mean herb's offense was pretty much the same thing the last 5 years, but with the occasional back door cut. and his teams could actually play defense! 1/19/2011 1:00:30 PM |

10 pts at half, ftw.
there have been a few Lowe coached games that, imo, were on close to being on par with that one.1/19/2011 1:03:58 PM |

I can't recall a Lowe coached game that was as bad as the St. Johns game. Most of the time we've had at least one good half. Like 2 or 3 years ago when we were down like 42-12 to UNC in the first half we played well in the second half (still lost the game, but we played better).
The closest thing I can think of would be either that Northwestern game or the MSU game, but neither was as bad as the St. Johns game. EPIC 21.5% eFG. 2/24 from 3, 20% overall from the field. 19 turnovers, and St. Johns was NOT a good team. They finished that year 9-18 overall, including 3-13 in the big east. 1/19/2011 1:12:16 PM |

^ I personally thought Herb's offense was beautiful when it was run perfectly. Those precision cuts and passes to open layups were nice and could be very frustrating for a defense...and when knocking down open threes, it could be a very difficult offense to guard against.
It just wasn't run to perfection very often. And it definitely didn't work against the zone. I thought our offense was great when we would run a mix of that and just a straight up post-up offense when Josh Powell was killing it.
"if and buts" and all...but with a Josh Powell type big man, just one slashing/creating guard to create when that offense broke down....and that offense becomes quite formidable. We just were never able to put together all those piece (we came close with Hodge and Powell...but fucking Powell went up and left). 1/19/2011 1:34:03 PM |

Herb's offenses were always extremely efficient. 4 of his last 5 years we were in the Top 30 (and 3 of his last 5 in the Top 15) in offensive efficiency.
They weren't always high-paced obviously, but it worked.
It wasn't the offense that was the problem with Herb. And Georgetown, especially with Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert, was about as beautiful a college offense to watch as you'll ever see...

I still think Levi was going to be one hell of a player. He had such good skills as a freshman and a good body -- that ACL just destroyed his career.
^ no offense, but that's just asinine.

Herb would be a much better NBA or Euroleague coach, because his system is way to complex for most 19 year olds to fully grasp. They just want to launch 3s and do tomohawk dunks and he's trying to teach them complex back cuts and double screens. Simple offenses work best for young players, like the Dribble Drive. The best players in Herb's tenure were people like Evitmov and Hodge who didn't fit the mold of traditional elite college players. 1/19/2011 1:44:09 PM |

^^^I wasn't being completely serious, of course, but in most games against teams with decent defense our offense seldom had more direction than tossing the ball around until someone had a decent look at three. Sometimes you'd see the ball get thrown into Ced/Powell/whoever was the designated bigman, and sometimes you'd see a guy like Cam or Hodge make something else happen, but more times than not it was 25-30 seconds of disorganization followed by a 3.] 1/19/2011 1:47:23 PM |

anyone remember the end game play Sid drew up to beat Miami on ESPNU either his second year (I think it was his second year at least)? IIRC it gave someone an open shot (which was missed) and put Fells in position to slam home the rebound for the win? It also was blocked after that by someone's fist since ESPNU wasn't well produced at all at the time compared to ESPN.
I liked herb until I was old enough to know better. ] 1/19/2011 4:41:26 PM |

Yes, i admit, for a couple seconds, I booed the team for getting off to a 3-21 start against the mighty penguins. I don't think it hurt their feelings too bad, they already knew they were playing terrible, and they knew the fans weren't happy.

The Wisconsin game wasn't nearly as bad from a fans standpoint IMO. That game was against a very good team that played lights out in a venue that's really hard to win in, coupled with us being without our best player and the closest thing we have to a leader.
The St. Johns game? Terrible team that didn't even play well. Game was on the road, but St. Johns wasn't exactly the kind of team that had any home field advantage. Herb's most successful team still has this loss on their resumé. 1/19/2011 5:16:16 PM |
