If work won't add hotspot tethering to my AT&T plan how can I enable it? Jailbreak I assume?

Yeah there are several jailbreak tweaks that will add the ability. Supposedly AT&T can tell if you're tethering without paying for it, but as long as you don't run up tons of data (which is impossible to do now anyway) you should be fine. I used 41GB in a month this past summer, and I got a text saying not to do it again, but they didn't mention anything about tethering and ever since then I've stayed under 5GB and they haven't said anything.

So is there a way to get music from my computer to my iPhone without hooking it up? I use iCloud backup and I really don't want to erase my phone and set everything back up in order to use iTunes sync. Will iTunes Match do this with music that's not in the iTunes Store? I've got a few different albums that were independently produced and on neither iTunes Store or Spotify that I want to get on my phone without having to open Dropbox or Goodreader every time I want to listen to them.

It's kinda funny a lot of iPhone users (me included) wish music synced over the cloud and a lot Windows Phone users are mad that its primarly cloud based and tethered syncing works poorly

Yes, it will upload into the cloud anything it doesn't have a copy of. You should be able to see the exact same iTunes library on your phone as on your computer.

So today I learned that Google disabled Exchange ActiveSync support for Gmail on January 30th, 2013. Maybe I just missed it but I hadn't seen anything about this.

If a device was already setup to use it prior to January 30th then it continues to work but no new devices can be setup to use Gmail via Exchange unless you're a paying Google Apps user.

I learned this the hard way when I broke my iPhone last week. My original iPhone 5 was setup and working with Gmail via Exchange because I had set it up prior to January 30th but I had to resort to IMAP to get Gmail working on the new phone.

^Just choose "Gmail" from the list of built-in accounts when setting it up, it sets Gmail up as IMAP by default

^When I got my iPhone (both 4s and 5), the built-in GMAIL did not work correctly. Therefore, you were forced to set it up as a microsoft exchange server. It was like this on my wife and my mother's as well...

I guess they ended up fixing it now.

does anyone here know how to create custom lock screen tweaks? i want a lock screen that looks like the Solar weather app and has the functionality to identify your location via GPS instead of manually editing the code for location data. can you make this?

That would eat your battery alive because either GPS is going to have to be constantly running in the background or it's going to have to be briefly activated each time you access the lock screen. I'm not even getting into whether or not it's technically possible on a jailbroken phone, I have no idea about that.

other OS's have temps on the lock screen (WP8, pretty sure i had one on Android) and dont have battery problems

I was responding to this. Which I took to mean that he wants the temp on the lock screen to constantly update to reflect the temp in his current location rather than just show the temp for a preconfigured location, as I would imagine most lock screen widgets do.

my lockscreen (bionic running eclipse ICS) has yahoo weather built into it (you just have to check the box saying you want it to show up)...it auto-updates your location (via coarse location from towers and fine location from GPS) on its own once an hour

24 hours of use knocks me down to about 40-50%

The 5 isn't much different from the 4S, but apple usually only does their iOS updates for the last two gens, so after a year you'd be missing out. And it is a little faster, bigger screen, I'm not sure about the camera but mine works a hell of a lot better than my friends older iPhones.. I'd say its worth it, my gfs just has little lags that mine doesn't

the 5 is leaps and bounds better than the 4S. the LTE network is worth it alone. I haven't used wifi once since gaining LTE speeds.

well... my wife's 4s took a dive in the toilet... it was working fine except screen... i tried to do a quick backup and it stopped working, got really hot, and hasn't worked since...

we just had our first child last friday so it has been a hectic time and she totally forgot it was in her pocket....

I would try the rice but I feel like I may have screwed it up by trying to mess with it. Plus, she can't go days without a phone with a newborn.

can i take her 4s to apple store and pay 199 for a replacement?

^most likely, yes. I'd throw in the sob story about your kid too, they might just replace it for free (don't count on it, though).

Big, big mistake trying to plug it up while it's wet. You should really be doing regular backups anyway, not like it's hard now that you can do it wirelessly.
