Well, I think part of that was Fowler's fault.
You always ask a couple of doubtful big names (Barnes, Calipari). I don't think there's anything wrong with getting turned down by those two (privately would have been better, admittedly)
After that, didn't we go after Belein? Heck, we turned him down when we saw his buyout. Hearsay was that he was willing to pay a large chunk of it....he wanted out
After that we went after Lavin (for some damn reason), and that was pretty humiliating.
I think an AD should privately guage interest from a few big names, but have a sure-fire up and comer list. Fowler apparently did not.
I wonder had State fans not started tracking planes how many of our strikeouts would have been made public?
Hindsight is 20/20, but we likely could have had Mike Anderson or Mark Turgeon at the time. Both would have been a big step up from thier respective locations. (I dont think Anderson was at Mizzou yet?)

If Fowler had not gone after the big guys publicly, our fan base would still be of the opinion that we are a high profile destination job. The only good that came of that search was illuminating just where we are on the pecking order, which is a lesson in humility some of us have forgotten.

I realize the man can recruit, but he had a less than stellar exit from UCLA. Baron Davis certainly wasn't a big fan of his coaching abilities.
I guess time will tell how he does, but I certainly don't want him. 1/22/2011 12:38:45 AM |

but, they also lost to fordham and st. bonaventure.... and they're in the middle of a brutal month long stretch of games. georgetown again, duke, pitt, nova, uconn, cincy, marquette, ucla, etc. who knows where they'll be by february. 1/22/2011 1:17:30 AM |

Anyone who is a UCLA fan knows they guy can't coach. They were happy to see him go. That's very telling. Good coaches are mourned when they leave.

i've just never been one to give up on a coach or a state team or complain about the guys we have. sure, sometimes i'm disappointed or disagree with a decision, but that's not going to make me bitch and moan.
i'll support whomever is employed by our university to coach our athletics teams. i don't see what the point in bitching is. the AD will hire/fire as they see fit. there is NOTHING we can do about who Yow decides to keep or let go. i just support the team and coaches, no matter who they are.
i supported herb. i support lowe and will continue to do so as long as he is our coach.

Message board rants are the result of the frustration with the sad state of our basketball program. Message boards are the only place where fans can get together and discuss the team, upcoming games, recruiting, and anything else dealing with their school. It happens at every school, not just NC State.
Arguing that message board fans should shut up and always be positive is ridiculous. Personal attacks should not be allowed, but discussion and criticism of the program is normal and going to happen no matter how good/bad we are and how much you want it not to. Stopping that from happening is akin to ending world hunger or poverty...it ain't gonna happen as long as forums are here. That's the nature of the business and the pressure is why these guys get paid so much...that is the way it is in the 21st century.
Message boards are not why we are where we are.

so what youre saying is that coming on here, as opposed to venting to real people in real life like i do, is the best thing for the program, despite the evidence that it does indeed do harm to our program.
we want our teams to do well, but fuck creating a better environment for them to do so.

I vent in real life too. Sure, we have some posters that go over the top, but I don't think an honest discussion of the program is a bad thing. What I'm saying is that it's pointless to whine about message board fodder. It happens EVERYWHERE, not just NC State. It's never going to stop. Ever.
Asking message boards to only be rainbows and sunshine is asking the impossible.
(And for the record, I haven't been one of the ones screaming to fire Lowe, much less midseason. Not sure I've even said anywhere to fire him...but it's possible. I don't think he's a very good coach based on the evidence, but I even said I wouldn't mind giving him another year to let these kids turn into sophmores. I do think we have some major problems, and I don't foresee them getting better, though)
