"Giles might need heart surgery

By DAVID O'BRIEN
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 09/03/06

Philadelphia — Marcus Giles will return to Atlanta Sunday for tests to determine whether he has a heart-valve condition that might require surgery. The second baseman was examined by a Philadelphia doctor Saturday and told that he might need a procedure that would entail going through an artery in his groin and stapling the valve shut.

"She said it would only be about a week to recover from that," said Giles, referring to what he was told by the doctor who examined him.

"It's great that it was discovered now. The main thing is getting it fixed right away."

First Giles will have further tests with Atlanta cardiologist John Cantwell, who works with the Braves. He will be examined Sunday or Monday. Giles said he was alarmed Saturday morning after taking a sip of a soft drink and experiencing knee-buckling pain after the drink seemed to go down his throat wrong.

"It was the scariest thing I've ever been through for about 10 minutes," he said. The pain subsided, but Giles still felt discomfort as he prepared for Saturday's doubleheader at Citizens Bank Park. There were no doctors at the stadium that early, so Giles was taken to a local hospital.

After the second game of the doubleheader, Giles met with Atlanta reporters and laid out what he was told.

"She said there's a valve in my heart, and it's supposed to keep out all the bad stuff," Giles said. "They think it didn't close after I was born." If the condition went undetected or wasn't corrected, Giles said, "A blood clot could get in there. Something could stop my heart or cause a massive stroke.""

if we sweep this series it'll be the highlight of the season for me

that being said, we'll probably lose all three

Update on Chipper - dude is turning into Griffey Jr with his constant injuries.

Quote :
"Chipper might miss 2 weeks

By DAVID O'BRIEN
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 09/05/06

New York — Chipper Jones said his reinjured left oblique muscle is worse this time than when he strained it five weeks ago and went on the 15-day disabled list.

"It took nine or 10 days [to recover enough to play] last time," the third baseman said. "Hopefully it doesn't take that long, but like I said, it felt worse" Sunday when he reinjured it.

He felt it pull Sunday when he swung and missed a pitch in the ninth inning of the Braves' 3-1, 11-inning win in the second game of a doubleheader against the Phillies.

He sat out the first game against left-hander Jamie Moyer but played the nightcap against Brett Myers because the side was better hitting left-handed.

He was injured when he missed a pitch thrown by right-hander Rick White.

Because rosters are expanded in September, there's no need to put Jones on the 15-day DL. He said if the Braves make a strong push this week he hoped to return as soon as a week, at least in a pinch-hitting capacity.

Jones, who hit a two-run homer Saturday, has a .382 average with 16 homers and 44 RBIs in 42 games since June 24.

He led the NL with a .347 road average before Monday and was sixth in the league in on base-plus-slugging percentage (OPS) at .978.

Starter decision not made

Cox said he would wait until today to decide whether Oscar Villarreal or Kyle Davies will start Wednesday's series finale against the Mets. Either will be on short rest after they made starts in Saturday's doubleheader at Philadelphia.... The Braves have reclaimed the dubious major-league lead in blown saves with 26 in 58 opportunities. Kansas City was next with 25 blown in 53 chances.

^ all season except that little hot streak to start the 2nd half. Honestly scoring 1 run in two games against Williams and Perez is just sad. Neither one of those pitchers is even important to the Mets. It's like they were just trying to throw us a bone because they felt sorry for us and instead we choked on it.

Davies has looked like absolute garbage since he came back. Jose Reyes could score 140 runs this season if Willie lets him keep running wild and he finishes the season on a tear.

Wickman signed to deal for 2007. Must say I'm very happy about this. He's been awesome this year for us, hopefully he'll stay in shape and anchor the bullpen next year. Schuerholz can now concentrate on other things besides a closer during the offseason.

New streak starts next year for the Bravos.

So, why did they deal with Wickman, but haven't worked on a deal with Smoltz?

The deal with Smoltz was completed a few weeks ago, long before this deal with Wickman.

Also on a side note, since the Braves bottomed out on June 22nd, they have gone 44-35. Not bad and if they played at that level all season, that would've been good enough for the wild card. Oh well - I sure hope they can bounce back next year. LaRoche for MVP in 2007

^ I guess I pwned myself. They just had a note across the ticker on ESPN that the Braves exercised the option on Smoltz for 2007. I thought when Scheurholtz and Smoltz were agruing and then made up that they had picked up his option then. Oh well atleast they are making the right moves with Smoltz and Wickman.

He blew on his hand slugger.. automatic ball.

Mets payroll: 102M
Braves payroll: 92M

I guess that 10M accounts for 20 or so wins.

how much of that $50 billion payroll went to paying off joe west

we've done this before, but that payroll number is way off

hampton's $15m is included in $92m, etc.

Just so you know, Pedro was pitching with what turned out to be a completely torn calf muscle. He is done for the year.. that is why he was so off..

El Duque has been one of, if not, the best pitcher in all of baseball in September. We'll be fine with our offense..

btw it's the Joey Devine experience...

yo ernie, i'll be honest with you

in 1995, thats was the first year i got into baseball, i just always use to hear the braves games in the news so i started liking them

that year they won the world series

after that i figured i always had to be a fan

anyways, when are they going to be good enough to get in the playoffs again?

your friend,

they'll be back on top as soon as time warner opens up the checkbook and allows schuerholz to rehaul the pitching staff

the offense is there, but no one in the pen could strike out a fifth grade softball player

except big bob

he is my god
