went a good 3 miles in duke forest today at a pretty brisk running pace for me, although I did walk about .5 miles of it, I felt like it was mostly dehydratation that limited me this time, it seems to always be one of several factors

1. straight up muscle fatigue, which seems to go along with dehydration for me
2. total cramping, usually in the arch of my foot or my calves, this used to be a major hurdle for me but proper stretching seems to have eliminated it
3. just being out of shape, the normal stuff you associate with it like panting, huffing/puffing, running out of energy feeling like you can't go on, cardiovascular/respiratory issues
4. then there are days like today where it just seemed like overheating, running low on fluids is what did me in, I just got kind of light headed, felt like my blood was boiling, a little dizzy/urge to vomit

lately it's been 1 and 4 that have totally done me in, any runners have some pointers to get over these hurdles? hopefully just winter time will help with that last factor as I seem to be at my peak when it's in the 40s or 50s outside

then chest workout--did machines tonight since I was lifting solo and figured it would be a good excuse to do something different:

4 sets Hammer Strength chest press
4 sets Hammer Strength incline press
4 sets decline cable press (one arm at a time)
4 sets flyes

I've lost 18 lbs but I wouldn't say that I'm "in shape"

I tend to keep my fat around the gut area and I could use some more muscle tone

how much should i realistically be lifting as a beginner. im a skinny guy and, while im not interested in gaining tons of muscle, id like a little bit to gain some tone.

i mostly do upper body work since i started capoeira which is a good lower body workout. usually along the lines of:

3 set vertical row
3 sets bench press
3 sets curl
3 sets military press
3 sets bicycle crunches
3 sets regular crunches

so yeah, weight recommendations?

my advice is between 10-15 reps at 65 percent of your 1rm(rep max)

i thought lower reps = gaining more strength, where higher reps = more toning

He is already skinny....so his definition of toned implies more visible muscles.

i weight 125 at 5'11. if i built a bit, i doubt it wouldnt show. ive always heard lower reps for building, higher for maintenance / tone.
