nope. but if you don't think he played a significant role in it, you're an idiot.
not just because of the statistics of mccauley vs costner, but because mccauley makes everyone around him better. costners first couple turnovers and horrible missed shots just sucked the life out of the team early in the first half. mccauley makes mistakes sure, but his energy pumps up the team on defense and that much is clear. if you deny that, then you just don't know basketball. 2/14/2008 11:53:47 PM |

b/c that's your answer. 5th best in the acc imo. definitely not worse than Boston College that's for sure.

we'd actually be pretty good if we could just get them both to play good. costner likes to hang around the perimeter anyway so he won't be in hickson and mccauley's way.
why does it have to be that one of them is good and the other is not. that is the problem. we need everyone on our team to be playing well.
we need a pg too 2/14/2008 11:58:52 PM |
simonn best gottfriend 28968 Posts user info edit post |
the problem here is you have an entire team of players not playing well, including mccauley, not to mention a coach that does not motivate, and everyone wants to blame this whole thing on costner? 2/15/2008 12:00:19 AM |
ohmy All American 3875 Posts user info edit post |
yeah...i used to think everyone was just being too hard on costner and i started to feel sorry for him when his minutes were reduced and he got injured and everyone was like "good riddance"
but i watched him a lot tonight...and he was just atrocious...from shot selection, to hustling, to...the worst of all...his defense. he lost his man so much. either he is just stupid or his head is not in the game. i haven't disliked a ncsu player this much in a long time.
(to his credit he did get some rebounds...but that doesn't say too much since bc is one of the worst rebounding teams in the acc)
^and you're right...the whole team played badly tonight. and costner isn't the only problem. but i would say he is the biggest problem right now. although i think the blame doesn't go directly on costner but rather on sidney for playing him.
and sidney's substitution patterns in general had me all night long

he had 14 points and 7 assists and 7 boards.
compare his effort/statline/whatever you want to anyone else on this team save hickson (and he plays worse than his stats indicate).
you cannot put this on anyone by themselves. it was a collective effort to be this bad.
i'm not trying to stick up for costner by any means. i just wish you people would shut the hell up about costner and look at the real problems on this team, he is one out of about four fucking hundred.2/15/2008 12:08:08 AM |

posted this in another thread too but this is sid's biggest weakness by far imo.
Quote : | "this team has one problem that is see and that is DESIRE.
being good on defense doesn't always require a ton of athletic ability, speed, etc. you have to WANT to play defense. look at wojo from duke back in the day. really annoying sometimes with all the floor slapping but that dude WANTED TO STOP YOU. he had no athletic ability. no one on our team, imo, wants to stop anybody. they stand in front of their man but they don't WANT to stop you.
this, imo, is why our defense is so bad most of the time. " |

him not coaching guys up is by far his biggest problem. you have to make these kids want to play, and he doesn't do that. everyone's playing for themselves, and that is very visible.
at the time i was very much against hiring calipari... but i really wish we had now

Costner has played well the last two games. Before that Lowe was dumb for sticking with him, but he's ready to play now.
Playing Ferguson at the start of the 2nd half was an enormous mistake where the game went from close to out of hand very quickly.
The kid got thrown once, bricked a layup, was unable to contend a transition bucket, and got dunked on for not boxing out.
We simply aren't good enough to give minutes to guys who are bad basketball players.
I'm not sure how we're supposed to win games. We had one of our most efficient offensive games and we still got blown out by a team that has lost six straight games in a MUST WIN situation.
Coach Lowe is firmly on the hotseat. This pretty much seals back to back losing seasons.
We're likely losing our best two players and have absolutely no one coming in next year.
A third straight losing season will raise the rabid wolves. 2/15/2008 12:53:58 AM |

I honestly think the players had quite and Herb had too because he knew and they might have known that he was leaving. He seems to be doing fine at ASU.
^Pretty much is spot on. Especially when talking about next year, and God forbid, Fells be a dumbass and leave too. Our 2 recruits will not be ready to step in and play next year.

This team has no emotion, no sense of urgency, no desire to win, and no character whatsoever.
Its a shame that Division I players in the ACC still havent learned at this point in the season that when your playing defense, YOU DONT HOLD YOUR ARMS BY YOUR SIDE AND STAND STRAIGHT UP. YOU WILL NEVER CREATE TURNOVERS THIS WAY. GUARDS, TO TAKE AWAY THE CROSS OVER, GET IN THE GUYS FACE, GET YOUR KNEES BENT, ONE ARM UP, ONE DOWN, AND DENY IT! IF THE GUY IS RIGHT HANDED, HES WANTS TO GO RIGHT 95% OF THE TIME. FORCE HIM LEFT. This is stuff you learn in Middle School Ball, and it aint happening! 2/15/2008 8:46:34 AM |

Sidney,
How can a 23 year old Turkish point guard be so much better of a coach than you?
You need to swallow your pride and ask someone for help. Hell, our fans are going to eat you alive if things don't significantly improve next year.
It's sad that we are all already looking forward to next year.
And we all know that this must be terrible for you being the dedicated wolfpack fan that you are.
We have all had rough spots, it's just that most of us don't have hundreds of thousands of crazy red neck fans analyzing our every move.
Good luck, I hope you figure it out before people with money start calling for your head. 2/15/2008 9:07:14 AM |

Quote : | "3) Sidney has an NBA mentality and doesn't think the regular season counts for anything." |
Well said. It's a trend, too - NBA coaches don't do so well when they move to coaching college, and vice versa. Same thing happens in football. It's the professional mentality vs. the 'amateur' (I think that most colleges at this level are really fielding what amounts to semipro) mentality.
We also have unrealistic expectations: any coach who comes here has to live up to our closest neighbors, who are synonymous with college basketball. We want our coaches to do something that nobody else in college basketball can do - beat Carolina and Dook with regularity. I pity Sid like I pitied Herb (who ASU hails as a conquering hero) - our mascot ought to be the Rabid Vulture.2/15/2008 9:10:05 AM |

Complete bullshit. No one is holding sid to this, and no one expected him to beat carolina and duke regularly.
Sid is under fire because he lost to UNO and ECU, and the team is playing just as bad months later as it did during those embarrassing losses. If we had even been competitive at carolina or at duke, that would also have been much more acceptable than what actually happened.

Lowe's had to deal with injuries, inexperience at point guard, and a terrible slump from his #1 scorer from last year. Not to mention chemistry issues from introducing new players. Overcoming all that is asking a lot from anyone, let alone a guy in his second year head coaching at the college level in the strongest conference in the land.
However, none of those problems excuse lack of effort and poor defense that shows no signs of improving. If Javi turning the ball over 15 times a game and Costner hitting nothing but air were the only reasons we were losing games, I'd be ok with that. Sadly, that's not even the case anymore. It's frustrating watching us show some flashes of being a good team, but just not putting forth the effort to get there. It's hard not to blame Sid for that. 2/15/2008 10:31:14 AM |

this is on sid too. it is his responsibility to recruit players that will fit his system and fit the current roster based on needs, talent, whatever. you shouldn't bring in a kid as good as hickson and have the team get worse b/c of "chemistry" issues. that is on the coach to mold the team. look at the other top players like love, beasley, singler, mayo, etc. they have all made their teams better. lowe has to recruit the right guys and make them work.
obviously the players can help and i do think we have some pussies on this team that are whining a lot behind the scenes about their role with the addition of jj, but it is still on the coach to get them on the same page and playing together. he is THE COACH.2/15/2008 10:41:21 AM |

and another thing Sid...
We have a bench full of talent that can actually play defense better than the Costner/Grant/Javi.....how about we start rotating these guys in and use them as defensive stoppers when times getting low....then if we get a steal, bring the offense back on the court...you know....like almost every other team in the nation. 2/15/2008 11:03:59 AM |

I'm not either. Our talent level will go WAY down losing Grant/Hickson and picking up Williams/Mays. Neither one of those will contribute as freshmen.

I was a huge Herb guy as everyone knows but a middle-tier coach? Give me a break. There is a reason schools were lining up and offering the guy a chance to get out. Ask yourself this, if we fired Sidney or he resigned at the end of this year, how many schools would come calling?

You apparently are too young to know what Herb really accomplished. Herb took the worst ACC program to the NCAAs in 5 years and then consistently made them a top 4 ACC team and NCAA tournament team. He is a better version of Oliver Purnell. And considering the school has a grand total of 9 Sweet Sixteens in our supposedly glorious history, I would say that is pretty damn good. 2/15/2008 12:43:37 PM |

hows that different than you guys qualifying your argument by speculating that Hickson will leave? I'm sure you all hang out with him and he tells you all his thoughts and feelings
if Hickson planned on playing 1 year and going pro all along, why didn't he go to a better program and try to win a title in that one year that he confided in you that he was staying in college?
seriously though if he wants to go pro this year, he needs to strengthen up his fucking hands...i've never seen somebody as big and strong as him with such weak hands...any NBA point guard could knock it out of his hands without trying
and if he goes pro, hey that'll still be good for our program and Lowe's recruiting, even if he recruits some more one year wonders...i just still think its too early to tell...somebody like Marvin Williams wona title before they dipped after one year...Melo won a title and dipped...Oden and Conley got to the title game and dipped...will Hickson leave if the season continues downhill?
