I just watched the game on dvr, and apparently that was Czjakowskhy's first miss at CF. It is only his second season taking fg's, but he went .842 last season.

In the same vein, what's up with the slack north field goal net? I was behind it, and every (successful) kick went into the crowd, including warm-ups.

he missed two and kicked every kickoff short

in the spring/summer, there were reports that he was looking off, guess the could be true.

Czjakowskhy's was on the watchlist for that kicker award before the season. Now thats over....

He should take inspiration from hauscka making it on a roster.

You know he kicked most of those short on purpose, right? And he only missed one. The second was blocked. He's still a good kicker ... he's not Hauschka, but he's not Kiker either.

not trying to be a jackass, this is a legit question: why would he kick them short, when its still getting to the last returner? its not like he's getting crazy hang time or anything

^^you're going to have to explain that one, pal. Coach would like a touchback every time if he could get one.

Considering we don't have the kicker for touchbacks, kicking high and short is generally an acceptable strategy. Their field position went from the 50 yard line to the 35. It sucks, but until we get a kickoff specialist or our coverage gets better, that is the way it is gonna be.

If you would listen to the TOB show, he specifically says that they decided to basically sky kick or pooch kick high and get coverage down there quick because their return man was beating us. Yes, any coach would love a touchback every time, but we don't have a kicker on our roster that can do that.

Also, I hate to bring up this arguement, but for the most part of his career Adam Kiker was a very good and accurate kicker. Lou Groza Award candidate even. He just missed a few PATs that were detrimental.

but the thing is he isnt getting hang time and we aren't getting down there quickly. the opposing team has been reaching the 30 yd line before any pack players get close

I would say kick it out of bounds to get better field position, but I'm not sure the guy has the distance to make the sidelines.

good ol' Deraney. in his freshman season, 10 out of his first 12 kickoffs (including 6 out of 7 in the Texas Tech game) were touchbacks.

To be fair it's the entire special teams. We need someone that can kick it past the 10-15 yard line and we need people that can tackle the returner before they reach midfield.

It's still a major problem that needs to be addressed. Having a kicker not EVERY kickoff past the 15-20 yard line gives them about 20 yards extra on each possession assuming our coverage is decent. There are plenty of kickers around the league and country who can still punch it to the goal-line.

At best it's very worrisome to give away field position. Russell can't save our ass every weekend.

Yes. Russell Wilson could indeed save us every single weekend. Except the VTech and Clempson games. He might have trouble saving us there.

have teams ever just snapped the ball a little farther back for a punter against strong special teams squads? i mean i'd give up 5 yards of field position to avoid an almost certain punt block

against Vtech i want to see 0 punts

if we are past our own 40 go for it on 4th down.
if we aren't past our own 40 take the safety, instead of giving up auto-7 or auto-3 on the next play.

not really, but i sorta i am being for real

fuck that, go for it on 4th regardless. Just throw glennon in there to chunk it deep and maybe it'll be complete or intercepted. I'm sure they'd probably return it for a TD on a free kick.

run a punt pass on the first punt of the game and they won't come after any the rest of the game.

You do recall Deraney kicking it through the back of the endzone right? Even if he was 5 yards back he would have had plenty of touchbacks.

Deraney was a beast... whatever happened to him? Google searches turn up blank stats from the Lions 2007 season.

Oh wait, I found him on facebook. His profile says he's working at "Crosstown Tile" ...

what if they set up Russell Wilson as the punter...but then actually have him punt it

i think they would refrain from rushing him at least

im sure he could practice a few punts to at least get it 40 yards downfield lol

Look, Deraney didn't kick all his kick offs out of the endzone. He didn't even kick half out. And you better believe a guy catching the ball 7-8 yds deep versus a guy catching it 2-3 yards deep will make a HUGE difference in whether he takes off with it or not.

He certainly had more leg than Czajkowski has or had, but being 5 yards closer makes a huge difference.

I didn't see the Pitt game so I don't know what happened, but I was paying attention to the other games and noted (because I kicked in high school, so I pay attention to that) that he gets good hang time on his kick offs. This is probably because he doesn't have quite enough leg to put it deep enough to avoid a run out, so it's better to let it hang so the coverage team can run down.

Deraney had far more than 5 yards on our current kicker.

It may have made a small difference, but thats about it

They actually established that Deraney had the NCAA record in a year for touchbacks or unreturnable kicks although that is not even a category recognized by the NCAA, at least thats what they said on teh radio with Tony, claimed they had someone to keep track of it.

Nugent was the best college kicker I have ever seen. point blank period.

unless VT is smart enough to just bat it down instead of actually catching it.

I'm pretty sure they are.
