^^hear hear, in fact all of the primaries and caucuses before April (except for SC and FL) are proportional, and many of the contests after March are proportional too even though they weren't in 2008

Interestingly, if this year's rules had held in 2008, Romney would have ended up with a clear lead by the end of Super Tuesday, although not enough to convince McCain or Huckabee to exit the race.

It's more complicated than that.

That's not what it hinges on at all.

Precinct delegates are elected after the precinct caucuses are held. These delegates elect folks to send to the county conventions. The county conventions elect folks to send to the state convention. And the state convention votes for people to send to the national convention. They are not awarded proportionally.

When the media reports delegate numbers from Iowa, they are pulling a number out of their asses completely arbitrarily.

Ron Paul won FAR more than his fair share of precinct delegates. Down the line, that will mean he will get far more national delegates than the very large straw poll vote results everyone is reporting.

The vote result everyone cares about literally has no more impact on anything than the Ames Straw Poll, except the perception of its mandate. That's important for future states and media coverage, but does nothing for IA delegates.
