^I agree with your post...I'm not sure you'll find many people who would disagree with the moves Gottfried has made. I love his staff. The attitude of the team seems much better based on what the players have said in interviews. Obviously the recruiting has been incredible. I have no idea if Alex Johnson will be a significant player for this team on the court, but (another poster pointed this out as well) I think it was a very smart move to bring in a veteran point guard leader who can help the team out rather than rush to scoop up whatever remaining PG was available in this recruiting class.

I'm interested to see what kind of role De Thaey has this year. I thought he would end up being a project/practice team player, but after seeing that short clip of him at practice he looks like he could be a solid contributor 11/2/2011 9:04:14 PM |

i personally like that he didn't go out of his way to appease Harrow. we needed a complete overhaul after the lackadaisical play and carelessness Lowe's regime perpetuated.
but i agree with you about De Thaey. that guy is a beast. what's even better is that he is a 20 year old freshman, so he won't get pushed around as much as a freshman normally would. he's got some guns on him. 11/2/2011 9:24:35 PM |

Things certainly seem to be going in the right direction, but that was the case with Lowe for his first year. The preseason has turned out well, but none of this shit matters until we demonstrate improvement in games. 11/2/2011 10:53:53 PM |

PackGuitar AstralEngine From time to time I get these things right. They didn't let me write for StateFansNation for nothing (#humblebrag should go here... I mean come on, that's like a reputable journalistic institution right?).
^I think the biggest difference between Gottfried and Lowe at this point is his track record coming into the position. My last article <http://www.statefansnation.com/index.php/archives/2011/10/21/the-importance-of-qualifications-gottfried-and-his-staff/> went through this in detail, but Gottfried and his staff come into the 2011 season with relevant coaching experience adding up to 8 conference championships and 1 national championship compared to Lowe's staff that came into the 2006 season with only 2 conference championships of experience. That's not to mention the fact that Lowe had never coached on college game in his life when he started in 2006 compared to Gottfried who previously had Alabama ranked #1 briefly and made an appearance in the elite eight as a head coach (also coached on a UCLA national championship team).

My god stop bringing this stuff up like its new information. Everyone already knows he got Alabama to #1 in the nation, won a title with UCLA, etc. Everyone already knows UNCC made three straight round of 32 appearances.
Re-read what's already been discussed ad nauseam first please 11/2/2011 11:16:16 PM |

HaHa... sarcasm is lost on some I guess.
It's been stated, yet comparisons to "we felt better when Lowe came around" also keep getting stated over and over again. If the information has already been stated repeatedly, then it would help to stop making stupid comparisons about "well, we've been optimistic before" by comparing Gottfried to... anyone. Being cautious is healthy, but there is absolutely nothing to show he's anything like our previous coaches.

I actually read the article you wrote and really liked it. I ironically just had my roommate read it as we were discussing Warren just a few minutes ago before I saw this thread. Small world.
edit: also I agree that Gott is nothing like the others and he really is a high calibur coach. what happened to end his tenure at Bama was an unfortunate fluke and his work as an analyst since then has helped him network. The class he brought in is top notch and he's turned practices and conditioning around and there's proof of that in Howell's weight loss, the rigor of practice, and putting CJ Leslie in check. He has plans to take the guys to Spain for exhibition play against pro European teams and has organized tougher schedules to get us noticed. Yow has been trying to re-brand us as STATE, which is great and all in all the program is picking up.
Now just let Yow hire a football *cough Mike Leach* coach.

I think he resigned/stepped down mid-season.
From wiki:
Quote : | "On January 26, 2009, following the controversial departure of player Ronald Steele and a meeting with Alabama Athletics Director Mal Moore, Gottfried resigned mid-season as basketball coach at the University of Alabama." |

Well, similar to Herb in the sense that He left before he could be let go, although i don't think there's evidence thatcFpwler was going to fire Herb. Just having the fan base calling for it and it happening are two different things.
Gottfried alledgedly had some, shall we say "personal issues with the student body" and some trouble with his players in the middle of a disappointing start which followed a disappointing season and resigned. 11/3/2011 2:20:48 PM |

sad thing is, most of the unc fans trashing ncsu are people who never attended unc. I've noticed that amongst their fans, a lot of graduates are level-headed and dont resort to name calling, while wal-mart fans feel like they need to live up to their perception of "The Carolina Way" and belittle their (non)rivals. 11/3/2011 7:35:39 PM |

I've noticed both kinds of UNC alumni. The kind that's just their normal fan base who went to UNC and the kind who actually has a level head about things.
I think it's got less to do with the alumni/not alumni thing than it does the kind of people you interact with. 11/5/2011 9:31:07 PM |

Gottfried's trademark is his offense. As a result, our defense still looks like it's lagging a little, but seeing our players fight for the rebound is really nice. I'm still holding off on any kudos until I see it during a game, though. When Herb left and Lowe came to Raleigh, rebounding was something that supposedly was going to be improved on. 11/8/2011 8:32:34 AM |

scientific studies has shown rebounding is a function of talent and really can't be improved by coaching. Yes, different emphasis can be put on rebounding at the expense of defense, but even that has a minute impact.
We've got good rebounders at every position (except Wood at SF who never gets any) so we should be fine in that department this year. 11/8/2011 3:42:06 PM |
